Ciências Naturais é composto por artigos de várias áreas e subáreas do conhecimento, produzidos por pesquisadores de diversas universidades e centros de pesquisa do Brasil. Na área da ecologia trófica de animais, o artigo de Oliveira e colaboradores apresentou informações sobre a composição alimentar de três espécies simpátricas (que ocorrem na mesma região) de sapinhos do gênero Physalaemus (Physalaemus albifrons, Physalaemus cicada e Physalaemus cuvieri) em uma área de caatinga do estado do Ceará. Informações dessa natureza podem ajudar os pesquisadores a entender como espécies aparentadas, e que, supostamente, possuem as mesmas exigências ecológicas, conseguem coexistir. O artigo de Dornas e colaboradores traz informações atualizadas sobre a distribuição do passarinho conhecido como chorozinho-da-caatinga (Herpsilochmus sellowi) para o estado do Tocantins, o qual é endêmico do Brasil e está quase ameaçado de extinção. Os espécimes foram encontrados em enclaves de carrascos e campinaranas, que são áreas com uma vegetação singular. Por isso, os autores sugerem que essas áreas sejam definidas como zona de preservação/ conservação no zoneamento da Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA) Lago de Palmas, garantindo, assim, a proteção da população do chorozinho-da-caatinga que ocorre no Tocantins, bem como das espécies de outros grupos taxonômicos. Na área da entomologia, Valente e Guimarães apresentaram dados atualizados e revisados sobre a coleção de besouros bicudos da subfamília Dryophthorinae (família Curculionidae) da coleção entomológica do Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi. As autoras trazem informações sobre os dados das etiquetas de todos os espécimes analisados, fotografias em alta resolução dos espécimes-tipo e mapa com os pontos de ocorrência e com a riqueza de espécies da referida coleção, representando um registro temporal e espacial de Dryophthorinae da Amazônia. No artigo de Sales e colaboradores, também na área da entomologia, mas voltado para a biologia do desenvolvimento pós-embrionário, foram apresentadas informações detalhadas sobre o tempo de desenvolvimento de uma espécie de mosca varejeira (Paralucilia fulvinota), com base em material coletado em uma área de floresta amazônica em Manaus, Amazonas. Há também informações sobre o grau-dia acumulado e grau-hora acumulado, comprimento e massa corporal das larvas e a razão sexual das moscas adultas. Esses dados são muito importantes em estudos forenses, principalmente na deteminação do intervalo pós-morte mínimo de cadáveres encontrados em áreas florestadas da Amazônia, onde essa espécie de mosca necrófaga é relativamente comum. Ainda sobre os artrópodes, Braga e colaboradores apresentaram os resultados de um estudo etnozoológico desenvolvido no litoral sul do estado do Espírito Santo sobre a percepção dos pescadores artesanais em relação à importância dos crustáceos (caranguejos, siris, camarões etc.). As informações obtidas nesse tipo de estudo são de grande utilidade para a preservação das espécies, especialmente daquelas exploradas comercialmente, pois facilitam a comunicação entre gestores e comunidades. O primeiro artigo botânico deste sumário, de autoria de Carvalho e colaboradores, é sobre um estudo taxonômico das espécies das subfamílias Cercidoideae, Detarioideae e Dialioideae (família Leguminosae) que foram registradas para a Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, localizada nos municípios de Portel e Melgaço, Pará. Este artigo também traz chave de identificação para todas as espécies e outras ferramentas taxonômicas, tais como ilustrações e diagnoses. O outro artigo na área da botânica, de autoria de Santos e colaboradores, conta com os dados sobre o potencial fisiológico durante o armazenamento das sementes de uma planta popularmente conhecida como marupá (Simarouba amara). Essa espécie possui valor comercial, pois sua madeira é utilizada na produção de caixas, tetos, fósforos, molduras, compensados e instrumentos musicais. Portanto, o conhecimento da forma adequada de armazenamento das sementes de marupá pode ser importante para a conservação das sementes e para as atividades de produção de mudas. Na área da geotecnologia, Narvaes e colaboradores apresentaram os resultados de um estudo onde foi utilizada uma ferramenta de sensoriamento remoto (detecção de exploração madeireira em tempo quase real - DETEX) para investigar a ocorrência de exploração florestal licenciada e ilegal em um Projeto de Desenvolvimento Sustentável

Key to the adults of the most common forensic species of Diptera in South America. Flies (Diptera, blow flies, house flies, flesh flies, horse flies, cattle flies, deer flies, midges and mosquitoes) are among the four megadiverse insect orders. Several species quickly colonize human cadavers and are potentially useful in forensic studies. One of the major problems with carrion fly identification is the lack of taxonomists or available keys that can identify even the most common species sometimes resulting in erroneous identification. Here we present a key to the adults of 12 families of Diptera whose species are found on carrion, including human corpses. Also, a summary for the most common families of forensic importance in South America, along with a key to the most common species of Calliphoridae, Muscidae, and Fanniidae and to the genera of Sarcophagidae are provided. Zimmerman BISHOP MUSEUM, HONOLULU Abstract: Ten species of Rhynchophorinae are recorded from southeastern Polynesia, including two new species of Dryophthorus from Rapa. Excepting the latter, all the spe­ cies have been introduced into the area and most are of economic importance. Keys to adults and larvae, notes on biologies, new distributional data and illustrations are pre­ sented. This is a combined Pacific Entomological Survey (1928-1933) and Mangarevan Expedi­ tion (1934) report. I had hoped to publish the account soon after my return from the 1934 expedition to southeastern Polynesia, but its preparation has been long delayed be­ cause of my pre-occupation with other duties. With the exception of two new endemic species of Dryophthorus, described herein, all of the Rhynchophorinae found in southeastern Polynesia (Polynesia south of Hawaii and east of Samoa; see fig. 1) have been introduced through the agencies of man. The most easterly locality where endemic typical rhynchophorids are known to occur in the mid- Pacific is Samoa where there are endemic species of Diathetes. (I consider the Dryoph- thorini and certain other groups to be atypical Rhynchophorinae). West of Samoa the subfamily becomes increasingly rich and diversified. There are multitudes of genera and species from Papua to India, and it is in the Indo-Pacific where the subfamily is most abundant. Figure 2 demonstrates the comparative faunistic developments of the typical rhynchophorids. Twenty-three species documented from the parkway are first records for the state. Of the nine capture methods used during the survey, Malaise traps were the most successful. Periods of adult activity, based on dates of capture, are given for each species. Relative abundance is noted for each species based on the number of captures. Sixteen species adventive to North America are documented from the parkway, including three species documented for the first time in the state. Range extensions are documented for two species. Kontodimas* Summary The pathogenicity of indigenous isolates of Beauveria bassiana, Metarhizium anisopliae and Isaria fumosorosea was evaluated in the laboratory against larvae and adults of the sisal weevil, Scyphophorus acupunctatus. Inoculation was achieved via immersion of individuals into conidia sus- pensions of diff erent concentrations. All three fungal species proved high pathogenicity against lar- vae of the weevil, causing 100% mortality in most of the treatments. Beauveria bassiana caused the highest mortality of the adults (86.67±12%), followed by M. anisopliae (46.67±17.8%) and I. fumosoro- sea (40±17.5%). Mean survival time also diff ered signifi cantly among treatments and life stages of the weevil. In total, larvae survived signifi cantly fewer days than adults post infection. Results of the pres- ent study indicate the potential of indigenous strains of entomopathogenic fungi as biological control agents against the invasive weevil. Squamate reptiles are one of the many tetrapod lineages in which the limbs have been greatly modified from the pentadactyl generalized pattern, including different degrees of reduction in the number of limb elements to complete limblessness. Even though limb reduction is widespread, the evolutionary and develop- mental mechanisms involved in the formation of reduced limb morphologies remains unclear. In this study, we present an overview of limb morphology within the microteiid lizard group Gymn- ophthalmidae, focusing on digit arrangement. We show that there are two major groups of limb- reduced gymnophthalmids. The first group is formed by lizard-like (and frequently pentadactyl) species, in which minor reductions (such as the loss of 1-2 phalanges mainly in digits I and V) are the rule; these morphologies generally correspond to those seen in other squamates. The second group is formed by species showing more drastic losses, which can include the absence of an ex- ternally distinct limb in adults. We also present the expression patterns of Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) in the greatly reduced fore and hindlimb of a serpentiform gymnophthalmid.

L. sericata threatens human health and leads to significant economic losses in animal industry by leading to serious parasitic infestations. A three month old female rabbit was presented to the clinics of the Veterinary Faculty of Dicle University for the treatment of the wound located on the left carpal joint. The examination revealed that the wound was infested with larvae. The microscopic inspection of the larvae collected from the rabbit showed that they were the third instar larvae of L. sericata. The new species is morphologically similar to B. bresslaui, with which it has been confused; however head scalation resembles other species from sandy spots within the Cerrado (B. psamophila and B. oxyrhina). Like in B. psamophila and B. oxyrhi- na, the shovel-shaped snout of the new species is highly prominent, a typical trait of psammophilous habits in other gym- nophthalmids. The examination of specimens of B. bresslaui from several populations within the Cerrado revealed great variation among localities, leading to the reidentification of a specimen from Utiariti, Mato Grosso, previously referred to in the literature as the second record of B.
