Both Veloster and Veloster Turbo models feature cuttingedge powertrain technologies like direct injection, optimizing their appeal to youthful customers by combining excellent fuel economy, spirited performance and low emissions without compromise. Veloster’s strong appeal is evident in the marketplace, with high sales velocities and tight supplies, particularly of the fullyloaded Veloster Turbo models. Overall, the popularity of highcontent Velosters, both naturallyaspirated and turbo models, is yielding higher transaction prices and strong residual values. The first limited edition, Veloster RE:MIX, is nearly sold out, representing about 10 percent of Veloster sales during its availability period. Based on the success of the RE:MIX edition, Hyundai is bringing new Veloster special editions to the market in the near future. Look for the next Veloster performance model at the Los Angeles Auto Show. 2014 Veloster Highlights Limited edition Veloster RE:MIX reaches 10 percent of Veloster sales RE:MIX success spawns more Veloster special editions in the near future Rearview camera, driver’s blindspot mirror and daytime running lights are now standard equipment on all Velosters Torque Vectoring Control standard on Turbo model Active Sound Design incabin powertrain sound enhancement standard on Turbo Automatic Temperature Control now available on Turbo model Hyundai Assurance Connected Care telematics services standard for three years via the Hyundai BlueLink platform SPORT BIKE TUNER INSPIRATION Veloster’s unique design takes inspiration from a highperformance sport bike. Veloster has distinctive black Apillars that give the glass a motorcycle helmet visor appearance. In the front is an aggressive form of Hyundai’s signature hexagonal front grille, hood scoop detailing, and unique Hyundaisignature LED position lights. In profile the Veloster features “Fluidic Sculpture” character lines, muscular wheel arches, bodycolor door handles and mirrors, and wraparound headlights and taillights. Veloster’s dynamic rear design has a distinctive glass hatch, dual centerfascia chrome exhaust tips that complement the assertive front fascia. Inside, the center stack and controls resemble a sport bike fuel tank and incorporate an available pushbutton starter. The air vents are inspired by motorcycle tailpipes, while the floor console mirrors the seat of a bike. Metallic accents abound throughout the interior. Alloy pedals and a leather wrapped steering wheel and shift knob are also available. On the Turbo, Hyundai designers have removed the Veloster’s trapezoidal center exhaust and replaced it with two larger, free flowing round exhaust tips. Further, for 2014, Turbo models add Active Sound Design (later availability), providing richer incabin powertrain sound character for an even more involving driving experience, especially during spirited driving. From the bigger, bolder hexagonal front grille, ground effects, rear bumper fascia, and prominent diffuser vents, Veloster Turbo’s design adds aggression and aerodynamic stability compared with the base model. Veloster Turbo is available in Matte Gray paint. A set of 18inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts completes the Veloster Turbo’s distinctive design signature. From the front, Veloster Turbo reveals eight individual headlight LED accents, a feature typical on more expensive models. Inside the Turbo interior, leather seating surfaces with Turbo embroidering in the upper seatbacks help deliver a distinctive appearance while providing exceptional support and comfort. A turboexclusive electroluminescent gauge cluster offers driver information in a larger, clearer and more interactive format, with two TFT screens located between the tachometer and speedometer. Heated front seats are also standard on the Turbo version. THE THIRD DOOR Veloster combines the style of a coupe and the functionality of a hatchback, while also incorporating an additional passengerside door. In the past, some coupes have used smaller rearhinged access doors. These coupes have been compromised by having to open the driverside door before the rear door could be opened, proving to be inconvenient for both the driver and passenger, and extremely difficult to operate in tight parking lot situations. Hyundai implements a conventionally hinged door on the passenger side of the Veloster, providing safe and ready access to the surprisingly spacious rear seats. The passengerside rear door handle is hidden to maintain the coupe design. GAMMA 1.6LITER DIRECTINJECTED ENGINE The Gamma 1.6liter fourcylinder engine is the smallest Hyundai engine to use direct injection. This technology helps deliver more power, superior efficiency, lower emissions and higher reliability. With directinjection, the Gamma 1.6liter engine with manual transmission delivers a peak output of 138 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and maximum torque of 123 lb.ft. at 4,850 rpm. The Gamma engine with dualclutch transmission delivers 132 horsepower at 6,300 rpm and 120 lb.ft. of torque at 4,850 rpm. The Gamma also features Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing, an electronic throttle control, a roller timing chain, variable induction and innovative antifriction coatings, including CrN Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD) coating. VELOSTER TRANSMISSIONS Hyundai’s commitment to making the Gamma engine extremely fuel efficient continues by pairing it with a standard sixspeed manual transmission or a sixspeed EcoShift dualclutch transmission (DCT) developed by Hyundai. Hyundai’s EcoShift DCT takes the benefits of a manual transmission, including low fuel consumption, and blends them with automatic transmission benefits, such as high comfort levels and smooth shift quality. In addition, the EcoShift DCT enables direct connection for high efficiency and uninterrupted torque transfer during shifts. This powertrain also has an Active ECO mode which modifies engine and transmission control for improved fuel economy. The EcoShift DCT also incorporates Hyundai’s Hillstart Assist Control (HAC). HAC is designed to minimize rolling backwards on steep ascents. Veloster Turbo is paired with a standard sixspeed manual transmission or a sixspeed automatic transmission. Both transmissions were developed inhouse by Hyundai. Veloster Turbo’s sixspeed automatic transmission features steering wheelmounted paddle shifters and SHIFTRONIC® transmission gear control rather than the base Veloster’s EcoShift DCT. This transmission was engineered to handle the increased torque output from the turbocharged engine. The gear ratio spread on the automatic transmission is slightly narrower than the DCT (6.0 vs. 6.38) to keep engine speeds in the optimum power band during acceleration. The nonturbo Veloster’s EcoShift DCT was tuned specially for fuel efficiency rather than the higher torque and performance calibration of the Veloster Turbo. VELOSTER TURBO PERFORMANCE The 1.6liter turbocharged, directinjected fourcylinder engine produces 201 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 195 lbft of torque from 1,750 rpm. 2014 Veloster Turbo models add Active Sound Design (later availability) which enhances intake and exhaust powertrain sound character inside the cabin for an even more involving driving experience. Even more impressive, these Turbo models generate 201 horsepower on regular fuel, which represents a bestinclass specific output of 125.6 horsepower per liter. Hyundai’s 1.6liter Gamma turbocharged engine features a twinscroll turbocharger that, when combined with the directinjection system, results in minimal turbo lag for responsive power delivery. Twinscroll turbochargers have traditionally been used on more expensive high performance engines, but Hyundai has brought this technology down to some of the most affordable models in its lineup. Twinscroll turbocharger designs have two exhaust gas inlets divided by split walls inside the turbine housing, with both gas passages controlled by a wastegate. A twinscroll turbo recovers even more energy from the exhaust than a singlescroll turbocharger, thanks to a divided manifold.
