Water Bills could soar to pay for drinkable water

Despite holding claim to the second most expensive and comfortably the most complained about water of council areas categorised as 'medium-sized' within NSW, Yass Valley water could be about to become even more expensive.

Yass Valley Council will tonight be presented with information stating an increase of $260 per year to Typical Residential Bills will be required to pay for the construction of an upgraded water treatment plant if they fail to receive further government subsidies.

Households in Yass Valley paid $3.40 per kL of water used in 2019/20 which is well above the median of $2.22/kL in the medium category of 19 Councils with Walgett holding the cheapest at $0.90 and Tenterfield the most expensive at $3.80.

The project cost is estimated now to total $33.2 million, with the Council's water operations still holding an outstanding loan of $11.954 million as of June 2020, due to the raising of the Yass Dam Wall project of 2013, which also received no government subsidy.

For those that can recall, the Dam Wall project's repayments were considered hefty at the time at $205.67 per year for each household and was the highest loan repayment in medium category water operations in the state.

$10 million was provided in 2020-21 for an additional 316 security staff to be available at hospitals where there are COVID clinics.

Additional security staff were contracted at the beginning of the pandemic in April 2020 to assist with COVID-19 screening processes at the Yass Hospital entrance. As COVID-19 cases have significantly decreased across NSW, the contract with the external security company providing these additional security staff for COVID screening will end on 30 May 2021. There are options to pre-book international holidays for 2023, but Uschi suggested steering clear of those options, with so much uncertainty remaining worldwide due to the pandemic.

"There is stuff you can book for 2023 already, like world cruises, but again you have to pay a deposit, put money down and then you don't know whether you'll get it back."

"You'll always get it back in the form of a credit, but so many people have so many credits they're getting a bit blasé about it," she said.

Uschi also suggested to those that are opposed to being vaccinated that they should get used to the idea of not being able to leave the country when borders do finally open.

"A lot of people say, 'well I don't want to be forced to have a vaccine', but when people used to go to obscure Asian destinations or Africa or South America, they had to have typhoid, yellow fever, hepatitis shots, and people would do it without even asking another question," she said.

“Also, we hope to replace some of our tents which are past their use-by date; they’ve got broken poles, missing tent pegs and all sorts of things,” said Yass Scouts Group Leader Jenny Thompson.

Wear Orange Wednesday brought the people of Yass into town with sausages and SES merch on offer.

Whilst the morning started a little slower than they would have hoped, as the fog cleared, and the sun came out the day picked up considerably.

The aim of the day was to celebrate the work of our SES volunteers here in Yass, as well as potentially provide an opportunity for those within the community to see the Yass team and ask questions regarding what it takes to be an SES volunteer.

The Yass branch currently has 12 recruits in training but are always looking for more, and with so many new faces, it might just be the perfect time to join.

If you can see yourself in orange head to the SES-Yass Branch Facebook page for further details. Max O’Driscoll WOW DAY- Jade Bleakley, Roger Denham, Deborah Taylor and Jess Todd. Kardinia is an indigenous word meaning sunrise. Kardinia wines is located in Bush’s Lane in Murrumbateman and according to the website, is the “place where dawn breaks”. Winemaker Vikki Fischer certainly makes a dawn-like bright and beaming Merlot – the subject of this week’s “swirl” – the Kardinia Wines Merlot 2019.

The wine is broodingly dark red in the glass with flashes of purple. After a swirl this Merlot immediately impacts with Christmas pudding like aromas including dark plums, black cherries, hints of all spice, star anise and candied violets. On the palate, the backbone of cool climate acidity affords the wine with bright fruit flavours including red cherries and blackcurrants. The tannins are fine, in sync and help the wine to a lovely, lingering aftertaste.

My bottle went exceptionally well with simply grilled lamb chops but would go very well with any beef or lamb dish, especially one with a little shake of spice. This is a great value local drop. I bought mine from the lovely people at the Yass Information Centre, but can also be bought for $18 online here: http://www.kardiniawines.com.au

The Eagles were competitive, without the scores being close in the opening three terms, with the score at 66-8 as they headed into the final break.

The fourth quarter was where the Rams very much ran over the top of the Eagles, piling on 16 goals in a 100-point final term.

"Credit to ADFA they had plenty of run, plenty of spring about them and used the ball well." "We just didn't step up to the plate and were behind from the start," said Eagles Coach Brent Fraser.

Speaking on his side's inferior fourth term, Brent did not mince his words.
