Pashupata cult Received: 10 June 2016 was established around 200 BC by Lakulisha. Born to a Brahmin family Revised: 10 July 2016 according to Karavana Mahatmya, he died in the seventh month and during Approved: 20 August 2016 his short span he displayed remarkable spiritual powers. His mother floated Published: 1 September 2016 his body in a river as per the tradition and as said a group of tortoise carried the body to a Shiva shrine. The child became alive and became an ascetic. By Keywords: yet another account Lakulisha died but was revived by Lord Siva himself. Lord entered his body and preached the Pashupata moral and ethics to the Shaivism; world. The place of his rebirth is today a town called Kayavarohana "to Lakulisha; incarnate in another's body". This miracle is still celebrated among the Kaurusha; Pashupata believers. The archeological department takes care of two stone Pashupata; inscriptions there with the names of Lakulisha’s four disciples- Kushika, Kayavarohana; Maitreya, Gargya, and Kaurusha. Lakulisha was a basically a dynamic Pashupata reformist. -

Satanism, Tantrism and the Left-Hand Path
SATANISM, TANTRISM AND THE LEFT-HAND PATH Modern Satanism is, in the West, essentially precisely what one certain form of Tantrism is in the East, i.e. the primary form of anti-nomian religious and moral dissent from mainstream herd practice. This is characterized in BOTH by a preference for the physical and material over the purely spiritual; physical pleasures over physical denial, and the fully acceptable use of magic for selfish worldly purposes. This pretty much describes those elements common to the "Left Hand Path" in both Western (LaVeyan and Setian) and Eastern (Tantric) usage of that term today. So clearly the Left-hand Path encompasses both Modern Satanism and one of the forms of Tantrism. "LEFT-HAND PATH" IN THE EAST Tantrism can be found in both Hindu and Buddhist varieties. Hindu Tantric practice is generally divided amoung two paths; The Vamamarga (or vamacara or vamachara) or "Left Hand Path" or red tantra and the Dakshinachara or "Right Hand Path" or white tantra. The most obvious but not the only distinction between these two is that LHP Tantra involves actual sexual practice as part of its rituals while RHP tantra uses non-sexual yoga practices instead. It is interesting to note that in common usage in India today, the term "Tantra" has come to mean "black magic" while in the West that term has come to refer mostly to hippie-like "sacred sex" yoga classes. Experts say both interpretations tend to cloud the full picture of what Tantra is fully about. Praying through Politics, Ruling Through Religion: The Rajarajeswaram as an Instrument of Economic and Political Unification in the Chola Empire Preeti Talwai Andrew Shanken, GSI Kartikeya Date Architecture 170A 23 November 2010 Talwai 1 Introduction Sacred spaces throughout architectural history are rarely limited to reflecting religious ideology. Many layers of socio-cultural, political, or economic motives can be peeled away from famous religious buildings over time. The Hindu temple of South India is no exception. At first a purely religious institution, it evolved into an imperial political and economic instrument with an influence far beyond the religious sphere. This paper will examine the temple which is canonically considered the apex of Hindu temple architecture, which marked the shift to royal temple patronage: the Rajarajeswaram temple (Sri Brihadeshwara) at Tanjore, in modern day Tamil Nadu, India. Completed in 1010 C.E. during the reign of Rajaraja Chola I, the Rajarajeswaram is a monumental institution that relies on double-coding in its architectural forms to both religiously appeal to the masses as well as to politically control and economically benefit a vast empire. The paper will first lay out the background of the bhakti (devotional) temples to show their contrast with the royal temple. It will then address the temple’s architectural elements of structure, art, sculpture, and inscription in each main part of its layout, with respect to the novel political and economic meanings that the temple pioneered. Finally, the paper will discuss temple management and the monetary system of devadana, or land grants, the sustaining backbone of this new economic system. -

ABSTRACT The literary representation of Goddess Kali in Bankim Chandra Chatterji’s Kapalakundala (1866) presents a paradoxical image of a blood thirsty yet maternal goddess, which is foregrounded along with the trope of human sacrifice. While this theme of sacrifice highlights the larger gender politics of the novel, it also allows us to study the tension between the contending constituencies of Kali worshippers. The plot of Chatterji’s novel revolves around the tragic fate of Kapalakundalaat the hands of her adoptive “kapalika” father who sets out to punish his daughter’s betrayal for she obstructs the ritual of human sacrifice. She rescues the captured Nabakumar and eventually escapes with him from the island after a brief marriage ritual. The kapalika’s revenge is finally realized when due to a chain of events Nabakumar suspects his wife of committing adultery and proceeds to kill her under his father-in-law’s instructions. Even though Nabakumar’s doubts are dispelled at the last moment when Kapalakundala states the fact of her chance meeting with his first wife, the tragedy becomes inevitable as she decides to commit suicide as a gesture of sacrificing herself to the goddess.
