Sec on 2 Samples Type & Typography Heading Using Blackle er Blackle er is a type classifica on that is calligraphic in nature. It used to be called Text. Some refer to it as Old English or Old German.
Heading Using Novelty or Decora ve Type Type that is designed to be used exclusively for decora ve purposes, and are not suitable for body text. It is most commonly used in large type and is considered a display type. Most are full of personality and can only be used for specific messages.
They are also referred to as a specialty font. These typefaces are designed that way.
ALiEN is set in a novelty font that appears to be designed a er an alien language.
Heading Using Script A script is a typeface that is designed so that it appears that words are set without li ing the pen. You can see the excep on with the majuscule, when the “C” is not connected to the “a”. Heading Using Square Serif Typeface This large reversed type on the cover of seven magazine has square serifs, meaning that they don’t have any bracke ng. Another name for this classifica on of type is slab serif or Egyp enne (not because it looks like hierglyics, but because it became very popular during Queen Victoria’s reign when because of the archeological discoveries in Egypt a lot of things were influences by all things Egyp an. EBracke ng E Heading Using Outline or Inline Type Outline type is designed so that there is no fill, only the outline of the le erforms. This can be done with so ware, where the type is given a “no fill” and a “stroke” se ng. This was done here with SPADE and then offset. You can see through the outline type. Examples of inline are shown at the bo om. Graphic Subs tuted for a Le erform The mask is cleverly replacing the majuscule O; the saxis replacing the J. The word PHANTOM and could be used as an example of distressed type. Textured, Distressed, or Pa erned Type Morillo Massacre is distressed with spla er & blood. The typeface may have been designed that way or it could have been affected by a graphic editor.
Concrete Alignment
This term refers to how type is set so that it forms a recognizable shape. This can be done by force jus fying the type within a frame that has a specific shape or it can be done line by line to handcra the type into a shape. Hanging Ini al This is both a hanging ini al (because it extends outside the text block; it is also a runaround ini al. Raised Ini al When the first le er of the text has part of its form above the first line of type. Drop Cap The first le er is enlarged and drops down into the text. Here it is 9 lines tall. It is referred also as a drop ini al; it doesn’t havre to to be a majuscule (capital le er). It can be a minuscule (lower case).. Other Ini als The “S” is an overrlaid or overprinted ini al.
