David Lockard A JOINT PROJECT of the American Association for theAdvancement of Science and the Science Teaching Center,University of Maryland INTRODUCTION It is our pleasure tl present this fifth in a series of annual reports dealing with curriculum developments in science and mathe- matics. The original operations of the Clearinghouse began in 1962 at the University of Maryland and each year since, a report has been issued. The first three reports were concerned only with projects in the United States. However, it soon became apparent as a result of increased overseas interest in American developments and increas- ing curriculum activity throughout many areas of the world, thatan international treatment was warranted. Shortly thereafter, the Director met with Dr. Albert Baez and the UNESCO science education staff in Paris and with members of the National Science Foundation staff in Washington.As a result of these and other meetings the International Clearinghouse became a realityln 1965 and the fourth annual report was expanded to include curriculum developments through- out the world. Unfortunately, the supply of that and all earlier reports has already been exhausted. The prime intent of the International Clearinghouse is topro- mote better understanding by helping to establish and maintainco- operative relationships among all the curriculum project participants throughout the world through dissemination of informationon the science and mathematics curriculum activities. The fine cooperation from all individuals concerned has made the project thesuccess it is and we hope that this cooperation will continue in the future. The Report is designed to include projects of an on-goingor recently influential nature that have relevance for others in science and mathematics curriculum work. Each year additional project sum- maries have been added to the report as their workprogresses and some are deleted as their work has been completed. There are some- times projects that are omitted, not by design but by lack of in- formation, and it is hoped that the readers of this publication will furnish information on any projects that seem to fit the criteria. Since the report is being published several months earlier than it was last year, there has been a need to reprint some reports that appeared in the 1966 publication simply because thenew information has not yet arrived at our Center.Apologies are given to any of the project directors who may have mailed new reports which have not yet been received by us. The information as printed is normal- ly in the project director's own words as his response toa question- naire sent by the Clearinghouse Director. If additional information is needed on any one project the reader is asked to contact the project directors themselves, Although a master set of materials is maintained at the Information Clearinghouse for perusal byany visitors to the Center, we do not maintain any stocks of sample materials and these can only be furnished by the project directors. The International Clearinghouse is one activity of the Science Teaching Center of the University of Maryland and is carried outas a joint project with the Commission on Science Education of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Science Foundation. A description of the totaloperation of the Science Teaching Center isincluded on a following page in answer to numerous requestsfrom readers trying tounderstand our overall operation. We encourage visitors to come tothe Science Teaching Center to see the InternationalClearinghouse part of our operation, as well as ourother activities, such as ourreviewing of science teaching materials for theNational Science Teachers Association. Acknowledgments to individuals whoassist in this Report must, of necessity, be many. Obviously, the report could not exist with- out the fine cooperationof the project directors and theirstaffs. We are particularly indebted tothem. In addition, there are the numerous individualsassociated with organizations whohave fur- nished materials, as well as namesand addresses of those to whom we shouldwrite. This group would include those onthe staffs of the American Associationfor the Advancement of Science, theInter- national and the Course ContentImprovement Section of the National Science Foundation, the UnitedStates Office of Education, the President's Office of Science and Technology,the United States State Department, the Organizationfor Economic Cooperation and Development, the Pan-American Union, manyforeign embassies, and the staff at UNESCO in Paris. The persons who did much of the work putting this fifth Reporttogether are two members of my staff at the Science Teaching Center,Harold Gray and Maria Penny. I am par- ticularly indebted to them forthis activity and to our two fine secretaries, Mrs. Sharon Dormanand Mrs. Louise Wells, who handled the final typing as well asthe rough copy of the Report. In addi- tion, since our InternationalClearinghouse is only a part of our year-round operation, we are indebted to ourScience Teaching Center colleagues who interact with this projectand frequently host our guests. These staff members includeGlenn Blough, Carolyn Boyette, Philip DiLavore, Richard Ehrbaker,Marjorie Gardner, Marlene Murray, Herman Ruoff, Sherry Shearer,and David Williams. Designed to serve as arepresentative facility of its type,the functions of the Science Teaching Centerinclude teacher and supervisortraining, graduate education, basic researchin science education, andconsul- tative services. In addition to the Clearinghouseactivities, the Center staff reviews and displaysthe latest in scienceteaching mat- erials for the National ScienceTeachers Association. The reviews are publishedeach month in theAssociation's two journals, The Science Teacher and Science andChildren. The numerous and variedactivities of the Science TeachingCenter have resulted in ageneroUs and advantageous expansion offacilities. With the new additions nearingcompletion, the Center will have two modern, classroom-type sciencelaboratories with adjacentdemonstra- tion preparation areas and storage areas. Conference facilities will be available for bothlarge and small groups. An expanded
