A legnagyobb olyan evolúciós vonalat alkotja, melyben szinte kizáróla- gos a fitofág életmód. A legfontosabb pollinátorok közé tartozik, ugyanakkor szép számmal tartalmaz olyan fajokat is, melyeket kártevőnek tekintünk. Legközelebbi rokonaik a tegzesek (Trichoptera), tőlük feltehetőleg a triász legvégén, vagy a jura kezdetén váltak el (Grimaldi és Engel, 2005); a legko- rábbi, már egyértelműen lepke-jellegeket mutató kövület az alsó-jurából származik, és 190 millió éves. Dolgozatom tárgya, a Naarda Walker, 1866 genus a lepkék legnagyobb fajszámú öregcsaládjába, a bagolylepke-alkatúakéba (Noctuoidea) tartozik, melynek ismert fajszáma a 46 000-et közelíti (Zahiri és mts.-ai, 2012). E cso- porton belül az újabban elkülönített Erebidae családhoz sorolják. Eredendően óvilági trópusi-szubtrópusi genus: Afrikában a Szaharától délre, Ázsiában az Arab-félsziget déli részén, a Himalája vonulatától délre, a Csendes-óceán partvidéke mentén, továbbá a délkelet-ázsiai szigetvilágban, valamint Auszt- rália keleti partjai mentén jelenleg összesen 106 fajukat ismerjük. A jelen kutatás gyökerei a XXI. század első éveibe nyúlnak vissza, amikor Ronkay László egy taiwani intézmény Naarda-anyagát szerette volna feldol- gozni, ám azzal a ténnyel szembesült, hogy ott sokkal több fajt őriznek, mint amennyinek valaha is közölték taiwani előfordulását. A környező területek faunájának vizsgálata hasonló eredményt hozott, ugyanakkor a korábban leírt fajokkal kevés egyezés mutatkozott. Ahogy egyre több anyagot tanulmányoz- tunk, úgy kerültek elő tucatjával az addig sohasem látott fajok. Világossá vált, hogy a genus feltártsága igen alacsony szintű. Ennek okait a követke- zőkben látom: (1) a fajok kisméretűek, (2) legtöbbjük egyszínű szürkés- barnás, a feltűnő mintázati elemek száma igen kevés, ezért (3) határozásuk- hoz genitália-preparátumok előállítása nélkülözhetetlen, ugyanakkor (4) so- káig csak egy-két faj ivarszerve volt ismert a tudomány számára. Nagyon valószínű, hogy a legtöbb expedíció a mai napig nem foglalkozik ennek a csoportnak a gyűjtésével, ráadásul a mégis gyűjteményekbe került példányok nagy része meghatározatlan marad, vagy félrehatározzák őket. Bár a legutób- bi időkben elég sok fajt írtak le, biztos vagyok benne, hogy még legalább ennyi ismeretlen taxon található a nagyobb köz- és magángyűjteményekben. A sosem gyűjtött fajok száma pedig még ennél is nagyobb lehet. 6 Irodalmi áttekintés A Naarda genusról napvilágot látott munkák száma igen alacsony. A fajok eredeti leírásaitól, valamint helyi faunát ismertető katalógusoktól, kéziköny- vektől eltekintve alig jelent meg közlemény a témában. A genust Walker (1866) állította fel egyetlen fajra (Naarda bisignata Walker, 1866), de – a kor követelményeinek megfelelően – csak rövid, latin és angol nyelvű leírást közölt. A fajok felfedezésének első nagyobb hulláma egészen 1920-ig tartott, de legtöbbjüket egészen különböző genusokban írták le (pl. Hypenodes: Snellen, 1880; Helia: Hampson, 1891; Gynaephila: Staudinger, 1892; Cerynea: Walker, 1859; Hypena: Hampson, 1893, 1902, 1912; Rhynchina: Strand, 1920). A két világháború között a fajleírások üteme jelentősen lecsökkent, ebből az időszakból Prout (1928) és de Joannis (1929) érdemel említést. Ennek az időszaknak feltűnő jellegzetessége, hogy a fajok túlnyomó többségét azon országból származó szerzők írták le, amelytől az adott fajnak otthont adó gyarmati terület függött. Ezek a fajleírások elsősor- ban a szárnyak mintázatát ismertették. Az olyan, valóban megbízható bélye- geket, mint az ajaktapogatók alakja és mérete, vagy az ivarszervek, a kor szakmai lehetőségeinek és korlátainak megfelelően nem vizsgálták. A leírá- sokhoz nem mindig tartozott ábra. Ezen okok miatt a fajokat lehetetlen meg- határozni, ha kizárólag az eredeti leírásokra támaszkodunk; az egyértelmű azonosításhoz a típuspéldányok és ivarszerveik vizsgálata nélkülözhetetlen. A lepkék ivarszerveinek vizsgálatával 1876 óta próbálkoztak, de ez az irány nagyobb figyelmet csak közvetlenül 1914 előtt kapott, Pierce (1909) munká- jának megjelenésével. A Gynaephila genust Staudinger (1892) hozta létre egyetlen faj alapján. A genust nem hasonlította egyik rokon csoporthoz sem; úgy tűnik, hogy nem ismerte Walker munkáját és az „orientális” Naarda genus létezését. A vizs- gált területről később egyetlen újabb fajt soroltak

    Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Fauna Conservation Department Kadoorie Farm & Botanic Garden 29 June 2010 Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden Publication Series: No 6 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve moth survey 2009 Fung Yuen SSSI & Butterfly Reserve Moth Survey 2009 Executive Summary The objective of this survey was to generate a moth species list for the Butterfly Reserve and Site of Special Scientific Interest [SSSI] at Fung Yuen, Tai Po, Hong Kong. The survey came about following a request from Tai Po Environmental Association. Recording, using ultraviolet light sources and live traps in four sub-sites, took place on the evenings of 24 April and 16 October 2009. In total, 825 moths representing 352 species were recorded. Of the species recorded, 3 meet IUCN Red List criteria for threatened species in one of the three main categories “Critically Endangered” (one species), “Endangered” (one species) and “Vulnerable” (one species” and a further 13 species meet “Near Threatened” criteria. Twelve of the species recorded are currently only known from Hong Kong, all are within one of the four IUCN threatened or near threatened categories listed. Seven species are recorded from Hong Kong for the first time. The moth assemblages recorded are typical of human disturbed forest, feng shui woods and orchards, with a relatively low Geometridae component, and includes a small number of species normally associated with agriculture and open habitats that were found in the SSSI site. Comparisons showed that each sub-site had a substantially different assemblage of species, thus the site as a whole should retain the mosaic of micro-habitats in order to maintain the high moth species richness observed.

Anania coronata (Hufnagel), a Holarctic species of pyraustine crambid moth, has long been treated as having two geographically separated subspecies – the nominotypical Anania coronata in the Palaearctic Region and Anania coronata tertialis (Guenee)´ in the Nearctic Region. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analysis of mitochondrial DNA barcodes both recover four well-supported, reciprocally monophyletic groups within Anania coronata. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of genital structures reveal diagnostic differences that correspond to the four barcode lineages. On the basis of both molecular and morphological evidence, we conclude that Anania coronata is actually a complex of four species.

Nat. Croat., Vol. 29, No. 2, 227-240, 2020, Zagreb. In 2016 and 2017 a survey of the butterflies and moth fauna of the island of Lokrum, Dubrovnik was carried out. A total of 208 species were recorded, which, together with 15 species from the literature, raised the total number of known species to 223. The results of our survey can be used as a baseline for the study of future changes in the Lepidoptera composition on the island. In comparison with the lit- erature records, eight butterfly species can be regarded as extinct from the island. The most probable reason for extinction is the degradation of the grassland habitats due to the natural succession as well as the introduction of the European Rabbit and Indian Peafowl. Their presence has probably had a tremendously detrimental effect on the native flora and fauna of the island. To conserve the Lepidop- tera fauna of the island, and the still remaining biodiversity, immediate eradication of these introduced species is needed. Noctuoidea are the largest superfamily of Lepidoptera which have not yet fully investigated in Iran. In order to inventories such important group, faunistic studies on the families Erebidae, Nolidae and Euteliidae were made by light traps mainly in the three Iranian provinces of Fars, Khuzestan and Khorasan-e-Razavi during 2009-2011. Totally, 42 taxa belonging to 26 genera and 7 subfamilies were collected. Among these, one species – Drasteria kusnezovi (John, 1910) – is newly reported for the Iranian fauna, together with 23 new provincial records. Previous identifications are examined and evaluated. Based upon the most probable toponymic identifications, the internal logic of sequences of toponyms is considered, and these sequences are compared with those of the older Tabula Peutingeriana. RÉSUMÉ La présente contribution analyse les toponymes en rapport large avec la sphère iranienne (à l’exclusion de l’Asie centrale) qui sont répertoriés dans la Cosmographia du Géographe Anonyme de Ravenne. Les indentifications antérieures sont réexaminées et évaluées. Sur la base des identifications toponymiques les plus probables, on étudie la logique interne des séquences des toponymes, puis on compare ces séquences avec ceux présents dans la Tabula Peutingerina, plus ancienne que la Cosmographia. Mayerl & M. Lödl* Abstract The checklist presents all hitherto known species of the genera Zekelita WALKER, 1863 and Rhynchina GUENÉE, 1854 of the Palaearctic and Indo-Australian Region. Rhynchodontodes WARREN, 1913 is a junior, subjective synonym of Zekelita (LÖDL & MAYERL 1997a). Plumipalpia HAMPSON, 1898 syn.n. and Rhabinogana DRAUDT, 1950 syn.n. are junior, subjective synonyms of Rhynchina. The following synonym in the genus Rhynchina is introduced as new: Rhynchina plusioides BUTLER, 1889 (= Rhynchodontodes curvatula WARREN, 1913 syn.n.). Dezember 2011 ISBN 978-3-938249-01-7 Michael FIBIGER 1945 - 2011 Our dear friend and colleague, Michael FIBIGER, died on 16 February, 2011, peacefully and in the presence of the closest members of his family. For close on 18 months he had battled heroically and with characteristic determination against a particularly unpleasant form of cancer, and continued with his writing and research until close to the end. Michael was born on 29 June, 1945, in Hellerup, a suburb of Copenhagen, and began catching moths at the age of nine, particularly in the vicinity of the summer house where they stayed on the north coast of Zealand. By the time he was 11, he wanted to join the Danish Lepidoptera Society but was told he was too young and must wait “a couple of years”. So, exactly two years later he applied again and was accepted – as the youngest-ever Member of the Society. Michael always knew he wanted to be a teacher, and between 1965 and 1970 he attended training college at Hel- lerup Seminarium. Having graduated, he taught Danish, Biology and Special Education at Gentofte School until 1973. In the meantime, he studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Copenhagen from 1970 to 1976, and from 1973 to 1981 he became School Psychologist for elementary schools and high schools in the municipality of Gentofte, work which involved investigation and testing of children with psychiatric problems, counselling, supervi- sion and therapy. He was also an instructor in drug prevention for the Ministry of Education.

Box 567, Lilydale, VIC 3140, Australia Email: [email protected] HISTORY In this time of “New Release,” “PBR,” and “improved form” plants it is interesting to see the popularity of this, one of the world’s oldest cultivated plants. It seems that much of what we have come to appreciate as being of value in plants originated in the areas surrounding the Mediteranean. Lavender is one of these niceties. The early records of the Ancient Greeks, Romans, and Arabs show regular usage of lavender. It was used as a medicine, a bathing additive, a body perfume, and for a few other weird purposes. The Romans are credited with giving the name lavender. It is generally believed that the word is a derivation of the latin verb lavare, which means to bathe. The species first described is Lavandula stoechas from the Stoechades Islands (now called Iles de Hyeres). The Greeks and Romans also referred to lavender as Nard, from the latin Nardus italica, after the Syrian town Naarda. Lavender made its way into the modern history via the French monks around the start of the 9th century. Lavender was seen in many of the garden designs of the European gentry and religous orders. It became the herb of the royals in England when Queen Elizabeth I decreed that she should always have a jar of lavender conserve on the royal table. It first appeared in English literature during the late fifteenth century.

ADAMS 1 Research Associate, Section of Invertebrate Zoology ABSTRACT Antillean species of the moth genus Leucania (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Hadeninae) are revised. Adult habitus and genitalia of both sexes are described and illustrated for the eighteen species known to occur in the Antilles. Keys are given to adults and genitalia of both sexes. Seven species are described as new: L. toddi an.d L. educata from Cuba; L. lamisma, L. lobrega, L. sonroja, and L. neiba from Hispaniola; and L. rawlinsi fro1n Jamaica. Lectotypes are designated for L. clarescerzs Moschler and L. senescens Moschler. Cirphis hampsoni Schaus is placed in sy11onymy of L. secta Herrich-Schaffer. Leitcania dorsalis Walker is removed from synonymy. KEY WORDS: .Antilles, Caribbea.n, Hadeninae, Leucania, Noctuidae, systen1atics INTRODUCTION The systematics of the moth genus Leucania (Noctuidae: Hadeninae) in the Neotropics is in disarray. Adults in this genus are cryptically colored, resembling dried grasses that characterize their habitat. The species are difficult to distinguish based on color or superficial pattern. As a result, species have been poorly char­ acterized by authors, are freqt1ently misidentified, and many synonyms have been proposed inadvertently. To resolve these confusing problems, a revision of the New World Leucania was initiated, and this paper constitt1tes the first of four parts. Revision of the N eotropical species is in preparation, to be fallowed by review of the Nearctic fauna, and then phylogenetic and biogeographic analysis of the entire New World fauna.
