Anania coronata (Hufnagel), a Holarctic species of pyraustine crambid moth, has long been treated as having two geographically separated subspecies – the nominotypical Anania coronata in the Palaearctic Region and Anania coronata tertialis (Guenee)´ in the Nearctic Region. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analysis of mitochondrial DNA barcodes both recover four well-supported, reciprocally monophyletic groups within Anania coronata. Qualitative and quantitative analyses of genital structures reveal diagnostic differences that correspond to the four barcode lineages. On the basis of both molecular and morphological evidence, we conclude that Anania coronata is actually a complex of four species. -

CHECKLIST of WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea)
WISCONSIN ENTOMOLOGICAL SOCIETY SPECIAL PUBLICATION No. 6 JUNE 2018 CHECKLIST OF WISCONSIN MOTHS (Superfamilies Mimallonoidea, Drepanoidea, Lasiocampoidea, Bombycoidea, Geometroidea, and Noctuoidea) Leslie A. Ferge,1 George J. Balogh2 and Kyle E. Johnson3 ABSTRACT A total of 1284 species representing the thirteen families comprising the present checklist have been documented in Wisconsin, including 293 species of Geometridae, 252 species of Erebidae and 584 species of Noctuidae. Distributions are summarized using the six major natural divisions of Wisconsin; adult flight periods and statuses within the state are also reported. Examples of Wisconsin’s diverse native habitat types in each of the natural divisions have been systematically inventoried, and species associated with specialized habitats such as peatland, prairie, barrens and dunes are listed. INTRODUCTION This list is an updated version of the Wisconsin moth checklist by Ferge & Balogh (2000). A considerable amount of new information from has been accumulated in the 18 years since that initial publication. Over sixty species have been added, bringing the total to 1284 in the thirteen families comprising this checklist. These families are estimated to comprise approximately one-half of the state’s total moth fauna. Historical records of Wisconsin moths are relatively meager. Checklists including Wisconsin moths were compiled by Hoy (1883), Rauterberg (1900), Fernekes (1906) and Muttkowski (1907). Hoy's list was restricted to Racine County, the others to Milwaukee County. Records from these publications are of historical interest, but unfortunately few verifiable voucher specimens exist. Unverifiable identifications and minimal label data associated with older museum specimens limit the usefulness of this information. Covell (1970) compiled records of 222 Geometridae species, based on his examination of specimens representing at least 30 counties. -

Dezember 2011 ISBN 978-3-938249-01-7 Michael FIBIGER 1945 - 2011 Our dear friend and colleague, Michael FIBIGER, died on 16 February, 2011, peacefully and in the presence of the closest members of his family. For close on 18 months he had battled heroically and with characteristic determination against a particularly unpleasant form of cancer, and continued with his writing and research until close to the end. Michael was born on 29 June, 1945, in Hellerup, a suburb of Copenhagen, and began catching moths at the age of nine, particularly in the vicinity of the summer house where they stayed on the north coast of Zealand. By the time he was 11, he wanted to join the Danish Lepidoptera Society but was told he was too young and must wait “a couple of years”. So, exactly two years later he applied again and was accepted – as the youngest-ever Member of the Society. Michael always knew he wanted to be a teacher, and between 1965 and 1970 he attended training college at Hel- lerup Seminarium. Having graduated, he taught Danish, Biology and Special Education at Gentofte School until 1973. In the meantime, he studied Clinical Psychology at the University of Copenhagen from 1970 to 1976, and from 1973 to 1981 he became School Psychologist for elementary schools and high schools in the municipality of Gentofte, work which involved investigation and testing of children with psychiatric problems, counselling, supervi- sion and therapy. He was also an instructor in drug prevention for the Ministry of Education. -
On the Taxonomy of the Lygephila BILLBERG, 1820-Autophila HÜBNER

November 2014 ISBN 978-3-938249-06-2 On the taxonomy of the Lygephila BILLBERG, 1820-Autophila HÜBNER, [1823] -Apopestes HÜBNER, [1823] generic complex (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Erebinae) with the description of three new taxa and Katyusha raised to generic status János BABICS Abstract The genera Lygephila BILLBERG, 1820, Autophila HÜBNER, [1823] 1816 and Apopestes HÜBNER, [1823] 1816 are revised. Two new species, Lygephila vargai spec. nov. (China, Yunnan), and Lygephila aphroditae spec. nov. (China, Yunnan), plus one new subspecies Autophila libanotica xsayarsa subspec. nov. (Iran, Binaloud Mountains) are described. The status of the subgenus Katyusha KEMAL et KOÇAK, 2009 is discussed. The systematic relationships of the genera Lygephila, Autophila and Apopestes are discussed, on the basis of features of their external and genitalia morphology. Key words Noctuidae, Catocalinae, Lygephila, Autophila, Apopestes, new species, new subspecies, Katyusha stat. rev., China, Iran Introduction The higher taxonomy of the Noctuoidea has been changed (LAFONTAINE et SCHMIDT 2010) radically; the Catocalinae trunk is currently placed as a tribe of the subfamily Erebinae LEACH, [1815] within the wide sense family Erebidae LEACH, [1815]. In the present work this concept is followed and the Lygephila-Autophila- Apopestes generic complex is considered to belong in the tribe Toxocampini GUENEÉ, 1852. A general examination of Toxocampini (BABICS et RONKAY 2011, RONKAY 2009) proved the close relationships of the genera Lygephila BILLBERG, 1820, Autophila HÜBNER, [1823] and Apopestes HÜBNER, [1823]. The detailed characterisation of their morphological features and taxonomic diversity is provided in the present paper. Because of this characterisation Tathorchyncus HAMPSON, 1894 treated as a genus distinct from Lygephila; additionally it is necessary to place Lygephila longicoecum KONONENKO et FIBIGER, 2008 within subgenus Katyusha KEMAL et KOÇAK, 2009 and to erect Katyusha as a genus distinct from Lygephila (see Taxonomic notes). -

The taxon Naarda ineffectalis (Walker, 1859) has had an eventful taxonomic history; in certain periods it was even synonymised with the type species of the genus. Treated recently as a species distinct from Naarda bisignata Walker, 1866, i.e. the type species, its female form has been hitherto unknown. In this paper the female of the species is described and the known range of it is extended by new data from Cambo- dia, Thailand, Japan, Korea and Sumatra. The species rank of Naarda notata (Hampson, 1891) is formally reinstated (stat. rev.). An identification key to the Naarda species of Korea and main islands of Japan is also given. With 21 figures. Introduction The genus Naarda Walker, 1866 (type species: Naarda bisignata Walker, 1866) consists of small, slender-bodied moths with straight and porrect labial palps. They are generally of greyish or brownish ground colour, with yellow reniform and orbicular stigmata on the forewings and have very diverse genitalia in both sexes (Tóth and Ronkay 2014a). Currently it contains 108 mainly tropical species distributed in the Old World; the number of known extant species has been doubled in the last four years due to thorough checking of preserved material by Tóth and Ronkay (2014a, 2014b, 2015a, 2015b, 2015c) within the framework of a worldwide revision, which is in progress. -

This is one of a few insects known to science that frequently disperse and breed throughout a great part of the United States, only to perish at the end of the summer season. Fall army worms are preserved as permanent residents only in the warmer parts of the South. There are indications that by repeated efforts to inhabit other regions the species eventually may develop a hardy strain that may be able to survive more rigorous climates. -
