High Technology Letters ISSN NO : 1006-6748 SYAMA TUNNEL – LONGEST ROAD TUNNEL IN JAMMU KASHMIR ON THE LOWER HIMALAYAN RANGE Dr. J.Amala Thanka Kumari, Assistant Professor of History, TBML College, Porayar, Nagapattinam. Abstract: Syama tunnel is India’s longest highway tunnel, on the Jammu-Srinagar national highway. Syamaprasad Mookerjee Tunnel also known as Syama Tunnel and formerly known as the Chenani-Nashri Tunnel. It is a road tunnel in the Indian union territory of Jammu and Kashmir on NH44. The work was started in 2011 and was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 2nd 2017.It is India's longest road tunnel with a length of 9.28 km. It is the first tunnel in India with a fully integrated tunnel control system. The tunnel reduces the distance between Jammu and Srinagar by 30 km and travel time by two hours. The all-weather tunnel bypasses snowfall and avalanche prone areas in winter at places like Patnitop, Kud and Batote that obstruct NH44 every winter and cause long queues of vehicles sometimes for days at length. Chennani-Nashri Tunnel Through the Himalayas: delivering cellular and public safety communications in India’s longest road tunnel Case Study The most important thing we build is trust Overview Together with partner Commtel Networks, Cobham Wireless deployed a cellular and public safety communications network in the longest tunnel in India. The construction reduces the travel time between Jammu and Srinagar by 30Km. Challenge The tunnel is positioned within the Himalayan mountain terrain making The Challenge signal penetration impossible. Due to the dense mountain terrain, the location of the tunnel and the materials used to build the tunnel, the RF signals could not reach the commuters and operational staff inside, denying them vital communication. -

This important town of Udhampur is the headquarter of the District and Tehsil Udhampur. The district is situated in the southern part of the Jammu and Kashmir State and is bounded on the West by Reasi District, in the North by Ramban, in North-East by Doda District, in South-East by Samba & Kathua Districts and in the South-West by Jammu District. District Udhampur serves as the Headquarter of Northern Command of the Indian Army. A Forward Base Support Unit (FSBU) of the Indian Air Force is also stationed here. The District is having an area of 2,380 sq.kms.(as per Revenue record). It accommodates a population 5, 57,689 persons as per census 2011. The density of population is 211 persons per sq.km. against 124 of the State. It has 357 Villages, out of which 4 are uninhabited. The villages are grouped into 17 community development blocks and 8 Tehsils. The climate of Udhampur varies according to altitude. The temperature rises sometime as high as 45OC and seldom goes below 1.5OC in high altitude areas. The District is primarily agricultural and pre-dominantly rural with more than 80.00% population living in rural areas. -

Himalaya is young mountain belt and tectonically active. National Highway-44 passes through mountain with varying topography and geological strata from Outer Himalaya to Central Himalaya. Not only ge ological and geomorphological structures but varying and critical climatic conditions have to tackled during the construction. Climatically area belongs to humid sub-tropical region of Jammu to temperate region of Banihal. Major geological challenges are Landslide, Hill slope, crossing of fault zones, tunnel construction and Hydro meteorological disaster. In this paper, I will discuss about the main geological challenges facing by road widening construction companies and will suggest precautionary measures for construction feasibilities.
