It has a rich history of inculturation of the liturgy. This story is not well known, and the purpose of this book is to tell the story to the rest of the Anglican Communion and the wider church. Sri Lanka has a unique mixture of cultures and religions, Buddhist and Hindu, in which the Christian church has developed. There has also been a context of strong socialist ideology. It is in this context that the church lives. Is the church to be in a westernised form requiring people to abandon their culture, if they wish to become Christians? This question has been wrestled with for almost a century. Out of religious and ideological dialogue the church has developed liturgical forms that help shape Sri Lankan Christians (rather than Christians in Sri Lanka).

    BUDDHIST NATIONALISM AND CHRISTIAN EVANGELISM: REARTICULATIONS OF ENMITY AND BELONGING IN POSTWAR SRI LANKA by Neena Mahadev A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland October, 2013 © 2013 Neena Mahadev All Rights Reserved Abstract: Based on two years of fieldwork in Sri Lanka, this dissertation systematically examines the mutual skepticism that Buddhist nationalists and Christian evangelists express towards one another in the context of disputes over religious conversion. Focusing on the period from the mid-1990s until present, this ethnography elucidates the shifting politics of nationalist perception in Sri Lanka, and illustrates how Sinhala Buddhist populists have increasingly come to view conversion to Christianity as generating anti-national and anti-Buddhist subjects within the Sri Lankan citizenry. The author shows how the shift in the politics of identitarian perception has been contingent upon several critical events over the last decade: First, the death of a Buddhist monk, which Sinhala Buddhist populists have widely attributed to a broader Christian conspiracy to destroy Buddhism. Second, following the 2004 tsunami, massive influxes of humanitarian aid—most of which was secular, but some of which was connected to opportunistic efforts to evangelize—unsettled the lines between the interested religious charity and the disinterested secular giving. Third, the closure of 25 years of a brutal war between the Sri Lankan government forces and the ethnic minority insurgent group, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), has opened up a slew of humanitarian criticism from the international community, which Sinhala Buddhist populist activists surmise to be a product of Western, Christian, neo-colonial influences.

    REVIEW ARTICLES BACKGROUND TO THE SRI VIJAYA STORY-PART IV, Senarat Paranavitana, Ceylon and Malaysia, (Lake House, 1966), and other sources of interlinear writing (see list in section 21) 16. VIJAYABAHU I, PARAKRAMABAHU I AND NISSAMKAMALLA This part, in fifty pages, deals with the history of Ceylon from the Accession of Vijayabahu the Great in 1073 to the coming of the Portuguese in 1505, a period of over four centuries. Nobody can accuse me of not bringing down the cost of 1i ving. But the aim is not to tell the history of Ceylon as such, but to give that history within the pattern of a history of Sri Vijaya. The story is based on the accepted sources with the addition of two Ceylonese inscriptions recently published; while Parana­ vitana's sources of interlinear writing will only be used sparingly as connecting links in the overall story. The two 'new inscriptions' are the Panusvasnuvara Pillar Inscription of the 9th century where the topo­ nym Yavaju-Kalingubimhi appears; and the Madirigiri Slab Inscription of the 11th century with the name Samara Vijayottunga. These inscriptions comprise two of four irrefutable pieces of evidence, three of which have already been mentioned in the third part of this paper, while the fourth will be submitted in Section 17 below. With all this new evidence. the story of this four hundred years' period produced by historians of Sri Lanka must be looked at again from an entirely new angle. Irrespective of whether the Kalinga in the story was in Orissa­ India, as the Simhalese historians have thought, or it was in Southeast Asia, as the evidence now shows, it seems curious that these historians have never asked themselves the reasons why the Kalinga princes who became kings of Ceylon, such as Nissamkamalla and Magba, ever inva­ ded the island in the first place.

According to the Disaster Management Centre 1 (DMC), 1,246,545 people from 333,383 families have been affected by the bad weather conditions. Women and children are amongst the worst affected. Nearly 273,995 people had sought shelter in 534 temporary camps (schools, churches and public buildings), 225 of them in Batticaloa district, set up by the government. Once the water receded, most of the families returned to their original places but find it difficult to rehabilitate due to major losses to property and livelihoods. Several families continue to live with host families, as their houses have been destroyed or are not fit to live in. As on 25 February the GoSL estimated that the floods damaged more than 95 percent of rice paddys in Batticaloa. Farmers whose crops have been damaged or destroyed may not have sufficient resources to purchase seeds for the upcoming yala 2 planting season, typically beginning in mid-March or April. For the displaced farmers who had accrued debt in order to purchase seeds for the current season, livelihoods degradation is a serious concern.

    SRI LANKA 2018 INTERNATIONAL RELIGIOUS FREEDOM REPORT Executive Summary The constitution provides for freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, including the freedom to change religion. The law recognizes four religions: Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, and Christianity. The constitution and other laws give Buddhism the “foremost place” among the country’s religious faiths and commit the government to protecting it while respecting the rights of religious minorities. According to representatives of religious minority communities and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), government officials at the local level continued to engage in systematic discrimination against religious minorities, especially Muslims and converts to “free” (nondenominational and evangelical) Christian groups. Local government officials and police reportedly responded minimally or not at all to numerous incidents of religiously motivated violence against Muslim and Christian minorities. There were some reports of government officials being complicit in physical attacks on and harassment of religious minorities and their places of worship. In March the government declared a 10- day nationwide state of emergency, restricted social media access, and arrested more than 100 persons in response to anti-Muslim riots in Kandy District in which mobs attacked Muslim civilians, shops, homes, and mosques, resulting in at least two deaths, 28 injured, and extensive property damage to Muslims’ houses, shops, and mosques. According to the media, in February the government deployed police after at least five persons were wounded and several shops and a mosque damaged in anti-Muslim riots in Ampara District. Evangelical and nondenominational Christian churches continued to state police harassed them and local government officials often sided with the religious majority in a given community.
