  • The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: the Life Cycle of the Child Performer
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Humanities Faculty School of Music April 2016 \A person's a person, no matter how small." Dr. Seuss UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHAMPTON Abstract Humanities Faculty School of Music Doctor of Philosophy The Seven Ages of Musical Theatre: The life cycle of the child performer by Lyndsay Barnbrook The purpose of the research reported here is to explore the part played by children in musical theatre. It aims to do this on two levels. It presents, for the first time, an historical analysis of involvement of children in theatre from its earliest beginnings to the current date. It is clear from this analysis that the role children played in the evolution of theatre has been both substantial and influential, with evidence of a number of recurring themes. Children have invariably made strong contributions in terms of music, dance and spectacle, and have been especially prominent in musical comedy. Playwrights have exploited precocity for comedic purposes, innocence to deliver difficult political messages in a way that is deemed acceptable by theatre audiences, and youth, recognising the emotional leverage to be obtained by appealing to more primitive instincts, notably sentimentality and, more contentiously, prurience. Every age has had its child prodigies and it is they who tend to make the headlines. However the influence of educators and entrepreneurs, artistically and commercially, is often underestimated. Although figures such as Wescott, Henslowe and Harris have been recognised by historians, some of the more recent architects of musical theatre, like Noreen Bush, are largely unheard of outside the theatre community.

1 Su b Organist of Blackburn Cathedral 1972-83 th who died, on Sunday 13 July, 2008 From Anna Stuttard (daughter of OC Alec & Pat Stuttard) Dear John, I was saddened to hear of Keith' s death at the weekend - I will write to Ruth, of course, but I was al so prompted to send the attached photo, which I've been meaning to send to you for a while. It's of the Young People’s Choir (YPC) in 1982, which Keith directed, and I have a note on the back with the following nam es: Back row, left to right: David Whittle, Peter Anderto n, Howard Culshaw, Richard Grimshaw, Craig Horrocks, David Tattersall, Andrew Birchall, Stuart Gibson, Dean Slater, Mike Ryan, Mark Hodson, Stephen Ward, Simon Elliott, Karl Farquhar, Brian Newton, Stephen Anderson, K eith Bond (half hidden!), John Marr, Stephen Rickerby Front row, left to right: Anna Stuttard, Pam Walker, A lison Whittle, Ruth Beaumont, Heather Starkie, Diane Lewis, M argaret Marr, Veronica Tobin (Keith’s daughter), Caro l Riding, Ann Wilson, Jackie Oddie, Sue Taylor, Wendy Traci e, Karen Caunter, Debra Farquhar. I was privileged to be in the YPC for several years under Keith's direction, and I owe Keith so muc h. In the choir, I was introduced to a huge range of m usic and learned everything important I ever learned about singing and about working with other musicians. I can't overstat e how important it was to me - music might never have been such a big part of my life had it not been for Keith and the YPC.

  • 2019 Annual Review
2019 ANNUAL REVIEW We receive no public subsidy with over 90% of our income generated from ticket sales, and OUR 2019 SEASON ENGAGED yet we have maintained our lowest ticket price of £25 for seven years, increasing the number of tickets available at that price by 93%. At the same time, membership of our BREEZE WITH 142,500 VISITORS scheme – where those aged 18-25 can get tickets for £10 – has increased by 37% over the ACROSS 18 WEEKS, BUILDING past 12 months. Opening with Thornton Wilder’s Our Town, a play which celebrates what it means to be ON EXISTING PARTNERSHIPS, human and the bonds of community, we offered increased access to our theatre by working with local charities, notably Camden Disability Action and Age UK Camden, and introduced ESTABLISHING NEW ONES, AND a relaxed performance during the run. Hansel and Gretel continued our partnership with English National Opera, building on the success of our Olivier Award nominated production of CHAMPIONING DIVERSITY IN The Turn of the Screw and, through Pimlico Musical Foundation, gave 33 children from one EVERYTHING WE DO. of London’s most complex communities the opportunity of appearing alongside professional singers. In A Midsummer Night’s Dream, we incorporated British Sign Language in a cast which included our first deaf performer, and reintroduced BSL interpreted performances to our schedule (all productions in 2020 will include BSL interpreted performances). Following the phenomenal success of Jesus Christ Superstar, which played to sell-out audiences at the Barbican this summer ahead of its North American tour, we continued our relationship with Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber by presenting Jamie Lloyd’s innovative new staging of Evita – a production which we look forward to taking to the Barbican next summer.
