IARJSET ISSN (Online) 2393-8021 ISSN (Print) 2394-1588 International Advanced Research Journal in Science, Engineering and Technology ISO 3297:2007 Certified Vol. 4, Issue 2, February 2017 Science Communication and Role of Scientists for Sustainable Development in India in the Last Decade: A Critical Study Ratul Datta1, Prof. (Dr.) Tapati Basu2 Ph.D. Research Scholar, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Calcutta, India1 Professor, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Calcutta, India2 Abstract: There is no denying the fact that, there is an increasing call for scientists and engineers to engage with the public more and more through mass media for sustainable development. The scenario of India is somehow different form the global scenario. Whether science journalism is one of the numerous casualties in the media meltdown in India is the most pertinent question of the last decade of 21st century. The overall goal of the study was to provide evidence for funding organisations, universities and other research institutions on which they can base a workable system to reward scientists for their efforts to engage with the public. The study involved a survey of research scientists in higher- education institutes and interviews with a cross section of respondents and other relevant parties and hence 83 scientific-research institutes had been chosen throughout India. This study also includes to find the active participation of the scientists through scientific articles, regular columns, post-editorials, letters to the editor etc and hence 8 major circulated newspapers from 8 metro cities were chosen. There is a great need of policy which enable a higher proportion of younger scientists to get involved in public engagement and the need to reward public engagement activity in the career progression of scientists.

  • Dynamics of International News Environments
Dynamics of international news environments Comparative analysis of online news services in the US and India By Kohei Watanabe Submitted to Central European University Department of Political Science In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Supervisor: Professor Kate Coyer CEU eTD Collection Budapest, Hungary (2011) ABSTRACT This research aims to understand the changes in international news environments by the Internet with particular interests in the global dominance of the US-based ITC companies. More than 60,000 international news items are collected from Yahoo! News, Google News and the online services of leading newspapers in the US and India, and dictionary-based computer content analysis is performed. In this thesis, the difference in increase of representation of news about developing countries by Yahoo! News and Google News between the US and India are examined. The results of the analyses show that Yahoo! News and Google News are creating almost the same amount of changes in representation of developing countries in the US and India. But Yahoo! News represents developing countries less than the online services of newspapers, while Google News represents developing countries more than the online services of newspapers. Less representation of developing countries by Yahoo! News is due to its total reliance on news agencies for news items. Higher representation of developing countries by Google News is due to its extremely diverse news sources including CEU eTD Collection non-Western news organizations. The diversity in news sources produces a highly volatile and concentrated news coverage pattern and attracts attention from Western audience.
