Many innocent Boer and African families were sent to these camps where they died of diseases, such as, poor conditions and lack of shelters. Boer families were sent to concentration camps in Heidelberg. Africans, on the other hand, were sent to the concentration camp in Greylingstad. A possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad is Bakkiesfontein 568 IR. Unfortunately, there is nothing to show where this camp is as a fire destroyed many of the records. Bakkiesfontein 568 IR was chosen as a possible location for the African concentration camp in Greylingstad because of the old house, stream, stone walls, railway, SR fort and the African cemetery. Bakkiesfontein was surveyed by foot. The aim was to find the location of the concentration camp. Areas where pedestrian surveys were conducted included the house, barn, possible midden, graves, stone walls and stone circle. The pedestrian survey showed that Iron Age communities also lived on the farm. Three test-pits were also conducted. Areas where the test-pits were conducted included the midden, between stone walls and on a slope near a stone wall. The test-pits were not that successful. The artefacts found during the test- pits and surveys include; metal, ceramic pieces and pottery, glass pieces and even plastic. -

ES/1034242/1 Abstract Against a context of declining sugar output in South Africa as a whole, the sugar industry in the Nkomazi Municipality of Mpumalanga Province has increased its share of the South African market. It has achieved this despite the transfer of at least 25 per cent of land growing sugarcane into black community ownership through South Africa’s land reform programme. The industry now claims that the majority of land used for sugar cane in Nkomazi is owned by the beneficiaries of land reform. This paper describes a survey of small-scale sugar-cane growers. It presents quantitative data that shows, on the one hand, a process of land concentration and ‘accumulation from below’, visible in the emergence of medium-scale growers, and, on the other hand, a move by the sugar milling company to take more direct control of sugarcane growing through rental agreements with small-scale land-owners. -

Within the Inkomati WMA, the Lower Komati sub- catchment is an area of intensive sugarcane farming. Historically, the area was reserved for large scale ‘white’ commercial farming, but since Apartheid came to an end in 1994, the South African government is aiming to redress the racial and gender inequities of the past. In 1994, the Nkomazi Irrigation Expansion Programme (NIEP) was started with the objective to promote economic development for the ‘black’ people in the area. 9,800ha of previously under utilized land was transformed into 1500 irrigated sugarcane farming ventures.
