anchester College students have always relied on the generosity of others for their education here, from the early days of paper and pencil to the MI-pods and laptops of 2005. This magazine celebrates the many generous persons who have opened doors for students. We received each of these gifts with gratitude and hope. We are grateful for the actual dollars acknowledged in this report because those dollars pay our employees, heat our buildings, and put gasoline in our lawn mowers. We are grateful for the spirit of the gifts because these are gifts that not only raised our spirits, but also raised the spirits of the donors. If my husband Dave’s and my experience is typical, these donors had very good feelings when they put their checks in the envelopes and dropped them in a mailbox. Here at the College, we had a good feeling when we opened those envelopes. We are grateful for the trust of donors to give their gifts to help students they may never meet. We have students whose parents are school bus drivers, farmers, teachers, physicians, nurses, and long-haul truckers. We have students who work several jobs to stay in school. We have students who save and save and save to afford one international January class. Our donors assist each of these students, and we are grateful for their trust. We also received these gifts with hope. We hope our donors will continue to support Manchester College with their monetary gifts because we need those dollars to keep doors open for the students. We hope that new donors will make their first gifts and realize that it is more deeply satisfying to give than to receive. We hope that all of us who benefited from the kindness of others as we pursued our own education will pass on those gifts. For past and present gifts, we are deeply grateful. For new gifts, we are hopeful. In the words of Dag Hammarskjöld, “For all that has been – THANKS! For all that will be – YES!” [email protected] Manchester Inside A new challenge. 2004-2005 STEWARDSHIP Lilly Endowment praises MC with a $4.5 million challenge. Page 10 A new College Union. Here’s how they described the scene: Benin artist René Gnouhoui creates art primarily from refuse in a part of the world where refuse is abundant and artists are scarce. “I want to find beauty in what is common,” René told Reed and Harlow after inviting them into his home for breakfast. In this photo Rene’s daughters, Lutgardis and Mariette, and a neighbor friend live out René’s courage and vision as they teach Reed how to have fun in Benin. ©2005 Manchester College This Stewardship Honor Roll is published annually by Manchester College, 604 E. As director McAlpine of The Manchester Fund, however, I must underscore Scott appreciation for gifts to this important fund. The Manchester by Fund helps all our students in many, many ways. Photo Your gift to the fund provides ¾ Financial aid for our students, helping to make Manchester College affordable. A full 100 percent of our students are receiving financial aid. ¾ Academic quality. U.S. News & World Report says Manchester is among the “Best Colleges” in the Midwest. The Manchester Fund helps keep the College in such high regard. ¾ Support for our top-notch faculty. More than 94 percent of our classes are taught by full-time faculty and 93 percent of our faculty have earned Ph.D.s or the highest degree in their fields. Our students are taught by an exceptionally talented faculty in a small class setting. ¾ Maintenance of our beautiful campus. Our dedicated, meticulous groundskeepers and their student crews work long hours trimming, planting, clearing, with added diligence this summer and fall toward a gorgeous setting for the Science Center dedication and inauguration of President Jo Young Switzer. ¾ Technology upgrades. Manchester maintains a 6:1 student-computer ratio to provide our students with the tools they need to succeed in our increasingly fast-paced world. In addition, Manchester’s technology staff supports students’ personal computers. Last year, the tech staff worked on more than 400 student-owned PCs. ¾ Support for student activities and organizations. Our students are bright, energized ... and busy! Manchester supports more than 55 student clubs and organizations that enrich student life and the overall educational experience at Manchester College. The Manchester Fund provides a solid foundation for our students each and every year. If you are unsure of where to place your valued support, start with The Manchester Fund. Thank you, again, for your generous gifts. Manchester College’s programs, students, faculty and campus are stronger because of you. Cathy D.
