Page 10 Cambourne Crier July 2021 COMMUNITY & EDUCATION A very in-tents month for 2nd Cambourne Beaver Scouts

2ND CAMBOURNE BEAVERS have been very busy this month. On 8th June we got involved with the Cambourne community litter pick, filling six large bags with rubbish from around the sports fields. We've made the most of the good weather as well and been out on our bikes, with the Beavers earning their 'Cyclist' badges for learning about cycle safety and maintenance - and showing off their skills around courses marked out on the field. Also over the past four weeks, the Beavers have been taking a special interest in their pets and local wildlife to earn their 'Animal Friend' badges - learning about habitats, food and how to care for different animals. Each Beaver presented what they had found out about looking after their own pets for a month to the rest of the colony. The big event of the month however was Beavers in Tents! Held virtually this year made at our meeting the week before and pictures posted on the weekend of 19-20 June, Beavers then got stuck into the morning's '35' on Facebook from all over Cambridgeshire slept in tents challenge - celebrating 35 years of Beaver throughout the and dens in their gardens and lounges Scouts. Life through the ages EDUCATING OTHERWISE: Our family travelled back in time to the ‘Home Ed History Festival’ at Kentwell Hall in Suffolk. 14 periods were brought to life in the beautiful grounds, including Medieval, Tudors, 17th Century, Regency, Edwardians, The Great War, 1920s, 1930s, WWII Home Guard and 1960s. We especially enjoyed the early ages. At the Neolithic camp we learnt how coarse string could be made from lime tree bark for netting and softer yarn from nettle fibres for cloth. They were also scraping an oryx hide before covering it in wood ash to remove hairs and stretching it over a wooden frame to make a boat. As well as metal-craft the Bronze Agers showed how tendons from deer legs could be used to tie a metal blade onto a wooden handle for an axe and how best to fire clay pots in an open fire. The Vine enjoys a day at the zoo - without leaving school!

THE VINE INTER-CHURCH PRIMARY SCHOOL: This half term in Year 3 we have been enthused by the Stone Age and as part of our journey we looked at the importance of cave paintings and even created our own! On Monday 7th June, Year 1 at The Vine was turned into a zoo for the day! We had lions, bears, monkeys, giraffes, snakes, crocodiles, flamingos and more along with a few trusted zookeepers to look after the animals. Unfortunately, the day started off with a disaster as many of the animals had escaped from their enclosures and we had to use our map skills and orientate our way around the school grounds to find and return them safely to their homes. We took part in activities such as designing our own zoo, making our own fantasy zoo animal and creating 3D animal habitats. Throughout the day we kept an eye on webcams which were situated in Kenya and South Africa so we could see animals in their real habitats. We spotted hippos, giraffes, lions, elephants and antelope. Everyone agreed that our day at the zoo had been great fun! Page 12 Cambourne Crier July 2021 EDUCATION

Great turn out for Cambourne Mela 2021

OUTDOOR CAMBOURNE MELA SAW PEOPLE ENJOYING TIME TOGETHER ON A WARM DAY: A much-needed community event, Cambourne Mela, was organised by CamCare UK after 15 months - with an NHS event QR code, social distancing, mask-wearing and hand sanitation - in Cambourne on Sunday 6th June 2021. Clear sky and lots of sunshine helped to bring people to the Cambourne Mela, with many people enjoying a picnic with varieties of food. 25 community stalls came forward with ethnic traditional food, clothes, jewellery, home-décor, groceries, beauty products and games. The stalls were held free of charge with a request to donate to the CamCare UK charity only if they had a good sale. County Councillor Mark Howell and Cllr Joe O’dwyer, chair of Cambourne Town Council, visited the Mela and met the people of Cambourne. Cllr Shrobona Bhattacharya, who organised the event, expressed her joy to see the community outside the zoom screen and thanked Cambourne Town Council and its staff members who helped organise the event. Cambourne Mela turned out to be a great success with people’s joyful participation and the stallholders who put a great effort into their stalls to serve the community.

Peacehaven Baptist Church: Pastoral thoughts

We continue to meet. We have had a few more meetings since last month. Our second meeting was great weather, in fact a little too good. Having lived like a mole for the past year I forgot about sunscreen and myself and several others got a Pastor Donavan little sunburnt. So the next meeting we Bangs, Peacehaven used a little pop up gazebo with an Baptist Church additonal tarp. That was another really hot day so I decided to get a bigger gazebo and an inustrial fan. That weekend also being Father's day we decided since we are outdoors why not have a barbeque. So we got iced drinks and were prepared for the heat. However that weekend turned cold with light rain, but it went well. The men in the church received a Father's day gift of a baseball cap with a clip on light, really useful for working on stuff if you do not have a free hand to hold the light. In fact, we had some spares so the women got some as well. We will have another annual barbeque sometime as our church anniversary is coming up which we could not do last year. And at least we have a bigger shelter just in case. But things are looking possible to start meeting back in the Hub sometime this month. Contact me for weekly information as the situation changes. I continue to upload messages online at Pastor Donavan Bangs 01954 710510 https://tinyurl.com/y7saqark. We even gained two new [email protected] www.peacehavenbc.org.uk subscribers last month. I hope you all have a great month. Page 26 Cambourne Crier July 2021 COMMUNITY & SPORT
