This vast and many-faceted activity has never achieved the national attention that disco dancing received in the 1970s or that aerobic dancing received in the 1980s, but there are literally hundreds of folk dance clubs across the country, and they are compiled in a listing entitled the People's Folk Dance Directory (see page iii). The popularity of folk dance has increased a thousandfold since the early 1930s; the growth of folk dancing is especially noticeable among college students. Ohio ranks among the ten states in the country having the most folk dancers. In Dayton, the Miami Valley Folk Dancers, with 100 members, is the only dance group that has a truly international repertoire. Formed in 1952, it ranks among the oldest recreational folk dance groups still in existence in the country. The cost of attending an evening of folk dance in Dayton is 50 cents, exactly the same price as in 1952! But how did folk dancing develop in this country? The United States, a relatively young country, was formed by peoples from every corner of the world. They brought with them their hopes, their dreams, and their unique traditions of religion, food, music, and dance. Those who became interested in these customs of music, arts, and dance gave rise to the Folk Dance Movement of the twentieth century. The pioneers of this movement (1900 - 1930) included Elizabeth Burchenal (founder of the American Folk Dance Society), Mary Wood Hinman (leader of Chicago's Hull House and the New School for Social Research in New York City), Vyts Beliajus (editor of Viltis Magazine, and the very first workshop teacher for the Miami Valley Folk Dancers in 1952), and Anatol Joukowsky (former ballet master of the Yugoslavian State Theatre). In the period 1930 - 1960, the growth of international folk dance in the form of festivals, clubs, classes, workshops, and camps was promoted by such individuals as Mary Ann and Michael Herman, Jane Farwell, and Richard Crum. In particular, the non- partner dances of the Balkans became increasingly popular in the late '40s and '50s. At the same time, Israeli dance was growing in popularity through the efforts of Dvora Lapson and others. The period 1960 - 1990 saw a flood of records, tapes, choreographers and teachers. The newer material appealed to the young and to the counterculture movement of the '60s and '70s. As a result of the growing dance offerings, many folk dancers in the 1980s began to specialize in particular ethnic areas: Scandinavian, Hungarian, Scottish, English, Israeli, etc. The i A Short Course in International Folk Dance Wright State University, 1994 organized international movement lost many of its dancers, attendance declined, and the population aged. Nevertheless, today there are innumerable folk dance workshops, camps, and festivals offered throughout the year. Enough history! Let's talk about why you should become involved in folk dancing. International folk dancing is an invitation and opportunity for you to learn more about your foreign neighbors, to understand their customs and beliefs, and to learn about their history and geography. The richness and diversity of the musical rhythms, melodies, dance patterns and formations is enormous, providing you with a lifetime hobby. Folk dancing promotes positive social, physical and psychological values. Socially, folk dancing provides you with a cosmopolitan atmosphere in which you can meet and interact with other people while learning about the cultures of other countries. Physically, folk dancing helps you to develop rhythm, neuromuscular coordination and balance and, if done on a regular basis, it can contribute to your overall physical fitness. Psychologically, folk dancing affords you the satisfaction of achievement and the enjoyment of learning new skills and techniques in an interactive group activity. In summary, folk dancing is one of the few activities that is physically, intellectually and culturally stimulating while being great fun at the same time! Happy dancing!! The next step begins with a step on the L. The rhythm of this step is quick-quick, slow. This step is danced on the balls of the feet and may be taken in any direction, and on either foot. Cifra Leap to R on R (count 1), step L behind R (count &), step on R in place (count 2). Same step to L. Can be done with stamps, or in other directions. Common step in Hungarian dances. Czardas To the L: step L to the L, close with R. To the R: step R to the right, close with L. This step has many variations in direction and pattern; it is done with flexible knees. Common step in Hungarian and Czechoslovakian dances. Debka Jump with feet together and turn knees to left side; jump again and bring knees to original position (two counts). Common step in Israeli dances. Drmes Fall onto L, bending L knee and raising R just off the floor.

    Types of Dance Styles International Standard Ballroom Dances Ballroom Dance: Ballroom dancing is one of the most entertaining and elite styles of dancing. In the earlier days, ballroom dancewas only for the privileged class of people, the socialites if you must. The choreography of this dance is what sets it apart from other styles, varying between the International Standard, and that which is American. Waltz: The waltz is danced to melodic, slow music and is an equally beautiful dance form. The waltz is a graceful form of dance, that requires fluidity and delicate movement. When danced by the International Standard norms, this dance is performed more closely towards each other as compared to the American Style. Foxtrot: Foxtrot, as a dance style, gives a dancer flexibility to combine slow and fast dance steps together.

    SYRTAKI Greek PRONUNCIATION: seer-TAH-kee TRANSLATION: Little dragging dance SOURCE: Dick Oakes learned this dance in the Greek community of Los Angeles. Athan Karras, a prominent Greek dance researcher, also has taught Syrtaki to folk dancers in the United States, as have many other teachers of Greek dance. BACKGROUND: The Syrtaki, or Sirtaki, was the name given to the combination of various Hasapika (or Hassapika) dances, both in style and the variation of tempo, after its popularization in the motion picture Alexis Zorbas (titled Zorba the Greek in America). The Syrtaki is danced mainly in the taverns of Greece with dances such as the Zeybekiko (Zeimbekiko), the Tsiftetelli, and the Karsilamas. It is a combination of either a slow hasapiko and fast hasapiko, or a slow hasapiko, hasaposerviko, and fast hasapiko. It is typical for the musicians to "wake things up" after a slow or heavy (vari or argo) hasapiko with a medium and / or fast Hasapiko. The name "Syrtaki" is a misnomer in that it is derived from the most common Greek dance "Syrtos" and this name is a recent invention. These "butcher dances" spread throughout the Balkans and the Near East and all across the Aegean islands, and entertained a great popularity. The origins of the dance are traced to Byzantium, but the Argo Hasapiko is an evolved idiom by Aegean fisherman and their languid lifestyle. The name "Syrtaki" is now embedded as a dance form (meaning "little Syrtos," though it is totally unlike any Syrto dance), but its international fame has made it a hallmark of Greek dancing.

    MUSIC AND TRADITIONS OF THRACE (GREECE): A TRANS-CULTURAL TEACHING TOOL 1 Kalliopi Stiga 2 Evangelia Kopsalidou 3 Abstract: The geopolitical location as well as the historical itinerary of Greece into time turned the country into a meeting place of the European, the Northern African and the Middle-Eastern cultures. Fables, beliefs and religious ceremonies, linguistic elements, traditional dances and music of different regions of Hellenic space testify this cultural convergence. One of these regions is Thrace. The aim of this paper is firstly, to deal with the music and the dances of Thrace and to highlight through them both the Balkan and the middle-eastern influence. Secondly, through a listing of music lessons that we have realized over the last years, in schools and universities of modern Thrace, we are going to prove if music is or not a useful communication tool – an international language – for pupils and students in Thrace. Finally, we will study the influence of these different “traditions” on pupils and students’ behavior.     Greek dance and everyday nationalism in contemporary Greece - Kalogeropoulou 55 Greek dance and everyday nationalism in contemporary Greece Sofia Kalogeropoulou The University of Otago ABSTRACT In this article I explore how dance as an everyday lived experience during community events contributes to constructing national identities. As a researcher living in New Zealand where issues of hybridity and fluidity of identities in relation to dance are currently a strong focus for discussion, I was inspired to examine dance in my homeland, Greece. In a combination of ethnography and autobiography I examine dance as an embodied practice that physically and culturally manifests the possession of a distinct national identity that can also be used as a means of differentiation. I also draw on the concept of banal nationalism by Michael Billig (1995), which looks at the mundane use of national symbols and its consequences. I argue that while folk dance acts as a uniting device amongst members of national communities, its practice of everyday nationalism can also be transformed into a political ritual that accentuates differences and projects chauvinism and extreme nationalism with a potential for conflict. INTRODUCTION A few years ago when I was still living in Greece I was invited to my cousin’s farewell party before he went to do his national service.     HORA DIN GOICESTI Romanian PRONUNCIATION: HAW-rah deen goy-CHEHST TRANSLATION: Dance from Goicea SOURCE: Dick Oakes learned this dance from Mihai David who learned while while performing with his brother, Alexandru, in the Romanian State Folk Dance Ensemble. BACKGROUND: According to Mihai, the dance is from the southern Romanian ethnographic region of Muntenia, around the city of Bucareşti (Bucharest). Theodor Vasilescu says that although he knows of no village in Romania with such a name, close names are the villages of Goicea or Goicea Mare, which are in the south of the Oltenia region, about 12 kilometers south of Giurgita. Oltenia, also called Lesser Wallachia, with the alternate Latin names Wallachia Minor, Wallachia Alutana, Wallachia Caesarea in use between 1718 and 1739, is a historical province and geographical region of Romania, in western Wallachia. It is situated between the Danube, the Southern Carpathians and the Olt river (although counties in the east extend beyond the river in Muntenia in some areas). Special attention is given to dances accompanied by singing from the regions of Raska, Novi Pazar and Sjenice. The aim is to establish their presence and importance in music and physical education. Analyzed are the curricula of music and physical education, as well as music culture textbooks, to determine which dances of this region have been proposed for inclusion in the classroom teaching. It is concluded that the dances of southwestern Serbia are insufficiently covered by the curriculum of these two subjects and that they were omitted from the textbooks of music culture. For this reason, this work’s tasks were to analyze the musical-pedagogical and ethno musicological literature that deals with the area of Southwest Serbia; to select suitable examples to work with students of junior school age; to determine their educational importance in teaching. Through highlighted examples, the students will be able to learn about the specifics of the traditional folk dances of Southwest Serbia, and to gain insight into the richness and beauty of folk musical creativity of this region.
