  • The Endless Fall of Suge Knight He Sold America on a West Coast Gangster Fantasy — and Embodied It
The Endless Fall of Suge Knight He sold America on a West Coast gangster fantasy — and embodied it. Then the bills came due BY MATT DIEHL July 6, 2015 Share Tweet Share Comment Email This could finally be the end of the road for Suge Knight, who helped bring West Coast gangsta rap to the mainstream. Photo illustration by Sean McCabe On March 20th, inside the high-security wing of Los Angeles' Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, the man once called "the most feared man in hip-hop" is looking more like the 50-year-old with chronic health issues that he is. Suge Knight sits in shackles, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit and chunky glasses, his beard flecked with gray, listening impassively. It's the end of the day's proceedings, and Judge Ronald S. Coen is announcing the bail for Knight, who is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and hit-and-run: "In this court's opinion, $25 million is reasonable, and it is so set." A gasp erupts from Knight's row of supporters — some of whom sport red clothing or accessories, a color associated with the Bloods and Piru street gangs. The most shocked are Knight's family, who have attended nearly all of his court dates: his parents, along with his fiancee, Toilin Kelly, and sister Karen Anderson. "He's never had a bail like that before!" Anderson exclaims. SIDEBAR 30 Most Embarrassing Rock-Star Arrests » As attendees exit and Knight is escorted out by the bailiffs, Knight's attorney Matthew Fletcher pleads with Coen to reconsider.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

  • Social Adversity Portrayed by Tupac and Eminem
Social adversity portrayed by Tupac and Eminem Written by: HIP HOP PSYCH Co-Founders Dr Akeem Sule & Dr Becky Inkster Published: 5th October 2015 Tupac Shakur and Eminem are often touted as two of the greatest rappers of all time. Whilst Tupac is African American and Eminem is Caucasian, their lyrics have similar narrative story telling styles that are filled with anguished suffering, anger and other emotional tones conveyed in their hip-hop songs. Two songs that describe important issues of adversity reflecting strong emotional turmoil in their lyrics includes the songs, ‘Death around the corner’ from Tupac Shakur’s album, ‘Me Against The World’, and ‘Cleaning out my closet’ by Eminem from his album, ‘The Eminem Show’. In this article, we dissect the lyrics for psychopathological themes and we use the biopsychosocial model to explore the underpinnings of the emotional turmoil experienced by these two characters. In the song, ‘Death around corner’, Tupac’s character is preoccupied with paranoia about a perceived threat to his own life as well as to his family’s life. He feels the need to protect himself and his family from perceived targeted violence. Straight away, the song opens with a skit. It is a dialogue between Tupac’s character, his partner, and their son. Tupac’s character is standing by the window with a firearm (i.e., an ‘AK’, abbreviated for AK-47). His son is confused about his father’s strange behaviour and his wife is exasperated with her partner HIP HOP PSYCHTM COPYRIGHT © 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED and feels he is consumed by his paranoia.

Korean American Creations and Discontents: Korean American Cultural Productions, Los Angeles, and Post-1992 A Dissertation SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Michelle Chang IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Josephine Lee, Co-Advisor Elliott Powell, Co-Advisor December 2020 © Michelle Chang 2020 i Acknowledgements As I write the last section of my dissertation, I find myself at a loss for words. 55,000+ words later and my writing fails me. While the dissertation itself is an overwhelming feat, this acknowledgements section feels equally heavy. Expressing my gratitude and thanks for every person who has made this possiBle feels quite impossiBle. And as someone who once detested both school and writing, there’s a lot of people I am thankful for. It is a fact that I could not completed a PhD, let alone a dissertation, on my own. Graduate school wears you down, and especially one framed By the 2016 presidential election and 2020 uprisings, rise of white supremacy, and a gloBal pandemic, graduate school is really hard and writing is the last thing you want to do. While I’ve spent days going through mental lists of people and groups who’ve helped me, this is not a complete list and my sincere apologies to anyone I’ve forgotten. First and foremost, this dissertation would not be where it is today without the guidance and support of my advisors Jo Lee and Elliott Powell. The hours of advice and words of wisdom I received from you both not only shaped my project and affirmed its direction, but they also reminded me of the realistic expectations we should have for ourselves.
