Nos conocimos en Sevilla mucho tiempo antes, pero no fue hasta demasiado pero lo suficiente como para enfocar nuestros teleobjetivos 2005 cuando compartimos “trinchera” por primera vez. Él unos dignidad y paciencia, hasta que decidió instalarse en Túnez al comienzo pasos por detrás en la retaguardia, más calculador, yo de avanzadilla, más de la primavera árabe. De nuevo, volveríamos a coincidir cubriendo inconsciente. Si compartíamos coche blindado solíamos discutir sobre las revueltas en Egipto, Túnez o Libia. Recuerdo su trabajo sobre Yemen, que publicaba en The New York Times, mucho antes de conseguir el World Press Photo; era realmente extraordinario. Un reportaje suyo de 2012 sobre la situación social en España, publicado en el NYT bajo el título de “En España, austeridad y hambre”, originó un gran debate en diversos medios de comunicación españoles que contribuyó a visibilizar aún más el drama que viven muchas personas en España. Algunos políticos y tertulianos arremetieron absurdamente contra Samuel por aquellas fotografías, al que acusaban de manipular y exagerar la crisis. De nuevo, se trataba de “matar al mensajero.” Sin duda, el trabajo de Samuel que a mí personalmente más me ha impactado ha sido su cobertura sobre el Ébola en África. Empleó varios meses conviviendo con los miles de moribundos de Sierra Leona, documentando sin descanso el momento más álgido del brote del virus. Sus impactantes fotos de niños embarrados en orín y su propio vómito, abandonados a su suerte en el suelo de un hospital local, volvieron a remover las conciencias de todo el mundo, obligándonos a los espectadores a reaccionar de nuevo. Desde mi punto de vista, ese trabajo debería haber sido galardonado con otro World Press Photo.

Siempre recordaré una tarde en el romántico jardín de la prestigioso Premio World Press Photo 2011. El jurado definió Universidad de Barcelona. Frente a mí, la figura de Samuel perfectamente el significado de la instantánea: “La escena Aranda. Le habían pedido que dijera unas palabras. Analitzar el treball d’un fotoperiodista mai és una feina senzilla. Les fotos estan vives, i sovint, amb el pas del temps agafen una dimensió nova. Si fem aquest exercici, de mirar amb perspectiva, el Samuel surt molt ben parat. Les seves fotos mantenen l’excepcionalitat amb el pas del temps. Personalment crec que ningú millor que un mateix per explicar com és la seva feina, i el Samuel ho té molt clar, li hem sentit dir mil cops: “m’agraden les imatges que no els hi cal peu de foto”. Hay dos momentos en la vida de Samuel Aranda, fotógrafo nacido compañía Gas Natural. Las horas libres, sin embargo, las aprovechaba en 1979 en Santa Coloma de Gramenet, que me gusta subrayar. Són múltiples els registres de les imatges de Samuel Aranda. La duresa de moltes d’elles em colpeixen, m’aterren: dels refugiats sirians, de persones a la guerra de Líbia, de la Xina preolímpica, de cossos a les cunetes del franquisme... De Wall Street a l’horterada marbellí passant per Colòmbia, Gaza... En les imatges de desolació, destrucció, misèria, odi... però també esperança i vida, la implicació i l’autenticitat del Samuel hi és total. D’aquí va sorgir la idea d’aquest Premi: un objectiu enfangat amb empremtes de vida, que furga en la veritat, que ens denuncia, que ens demana també d’enfangar-nos-hi, d’implicar-nos-hi.
