The Wisconsin Range party was composed of: Gunter Faure, leader and geochronologist; John Mercer, glacial geologist; John Murtaugh, igneous petrclogist; James Teller, field assistant; Courtney Skinner, field assistant; Harry Gair, visiting strati- grapher. The author served as a stratigrapher with both expedi tions . Various members of the staff of the Department of Geology, The Ohio State University, as well as some specialists from the outside were consulted in the laboratory studies for the pre paration of this report. Dr. George E. Moore supervised the petrographic work and critically reviewed the manuscript. Dr. J. M. Schopf examined the coal and plant fossils, and provided information concerning their age and environmental significance. Drs. Richard P. Goldthwait and Colin B. B. Bull spent time with the author discussing the late Paleozoic glacial deposits, and reviewed portions of the manuscript. -

Minutes of the last meeting, held on 10th May 2006 The minutes were approved by all present. It was pointed out that the letters of reappointment for Mr Geelan, Dr Thomson and Mr Woodman had not been received. The Secretary was asked to look into this and to ensure that the letters were sent. 3. Matters arising from the minutes of the last meeting Secretary’s review of development work being carried out on the BAT Gazetteer and APC website. -

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Organic chemistry is ubiquitous in the Solar System. A significant repertoire of organic molecules has been detected in bodies outside the Earth (e.g., in meteorites, in cometary nuclei, on Mars or on icy moons), but none of the detected organic mixtures has enough complexity to indicate Life. There are a number of potentially habitable bodies in the solar system where water, chemical gradients and energy coexist, in particular Mars and the icy moons of the giant planets. -

Mars, interior; Impact processes Abstract We derive synthetic electrical conductivity, seismic velocity, and density distributions from the results of martian mantle convection models affected by basin-forming meteorite impacts. The electrical conductivity features an intermediate minimum in the strongly depleted topmost mantle, sandwiched between higher conductivities in the lower crust and a smooth increase toward almost constant high values at depths greater than 400 km. The bulk sound speed increases mostly smoothly throughout the mantle, with only one marked change at the appearance of β-olivine near 1100 km depth. -

Back to Beardmore: By Kristan Hutchison Researchers explore the past from temporary camp Sun staff ike the mythical town of Brigadoon, a village of tents appears on a glacial arm 50 miles L from Beardmore Glacier about once a decade, then disappears. It, too, is a place lost in time. For most people, a visit to Beardmore Camp is a trip back in history, whether to the original camp structure from 19 years ago, now buried under snow, or to the sites of ancient forests and bones, now buried under rock. Ever since Robert Scott collected fos- sils on his way back down the Beardmore Glacier in February 1912, geologists and paleontologists have had an interest in the rocky outcrops lining the broad river of ice. During 1882-83 eleven countries cooperated in a project to study the geophysics and geodesy of the polar regions by establishing 14 research stations. Three of these were located in Canada’s Arctic: one each by the United States, Germany and Britain. They accumulated dataon terrestial magnetism and boreal phenomena and brought back valuable informationon arctic living. This year will mark the 100th anniversary of the first mathematical work. With his colleague Wilhelm Weber he International Polar Year, probably the most ambitious of established in 1836 the Gottingen Magnetic Union(Mag- 19th-century international scientific projects and the fore- netische Verein) which united a world-wide network of runner of more recent cooperative ventures such as Inter- observatories.
