[Honolulu Advertiser 18 November 1993] FONG, HUNG LIT, father of federal court Judge Harold Fong, died March 12 at St. Francis Medical Center. He was 95. The son of a rice merchant, Fong was born in Honolulu in 1897 and spent his youth in China. He returned to Honolulu in the early 1920s. Fong opened the Yee Chun Kee Laundry in Chinatown around 1925 and ran the establishment until his retirement in 1975. Judge Fong described his father as a hard-working man who was frugal and had good business ethics. The elder Fong had no formal education, so he wanted to be sure that his children and especially his grandchildren had the opportunity to become educated, the judge said. “He made sure the grandchildren strove toward it,” Judge Fong said. In 1973, the CBS news show “60 Minutes” did a report on successful second-generation Chinese-Americans from humble immigrant parentage that spotlighted Judge Fong and his father. The elder Fong had served as a director of Grand Pacific Life Insurance Co. and Finance Factors. He is survived by his wife, Yuk Ping Fong; sons, Donald and Judge Fong; daughter, Mrs. Edmund Richard (Alice) Yee; brother, Kong Wing Fong; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. FUKUDA, ROBERT, Former Honolulu and Big Island parks director Robert Toshiyuki Fukuda died yesterday at Hilo Hospital. He was 74. Fukuda was born in Ka’u on the Big Island. He received degrees from the University of Hawaii and Michigan State University. He taught at Molokai High School and Hilo High and served as Hilo High’s athletic director in the late 50’s. In 1965, he was appointed Hawaii County parks director and retired from that post in December 1974. Two years later, Fukuda was named deputy director of city parks and recreation by Mayor Frank Fasi, who promoted him to parks director in 1978. Fukuda served as Fasi’s Big Island campaign coordinator during the mayor’s gubernatorial bid in 1978. Fukuda retired in 1980 and returned to Hilo. He was a member of the Hilo Hongwanji Mission, Goji Kai, and Waiakeawaena Kumiai. Survived by wife, Nobuko of Hilo; daughters, Lois T. Yoon and Mona J.
