PRESS RELEASE 22 July 2015 SPAIN's MINANA WINS
PRESS RELEASE 22 July 2015 SPAIN’S MINANA WINS EUROPEAN OPTIMIST CROWN WITH RACE TO SPARE Spain’s Julia Minana has been crowned the 2015 Girls’ Optimist European Champion, wrapping up the title with a race to spare at the Magic Marine Optimist European Championships at Plas Heli, Pwllheli today (Wednesday 22 July). Minana’s performance over the week has been so consistent that even if she did not take her place on the 49‐boat girls Gold fleet start line on the final day of racing tomorrow, she could not be beaten to the top trophy. The 15‐year‐old from Javea, on Spain’s east coast, scored two fourth places and a 19th today, to put her in a seemingly unassailable position heading into the last race. But her early victory was confirmed following the outcome of a protest hearing. Minana won the first race of the event on Sunday, and before today was discarding a highest score of a fourth. Overnight leader Palma Cargo (CRO), who had reveled in the challenging breezes of the qualifying series, did not manage to transfer her form in the lighter, shiftier airs the fleet experienced in today’s final series, as Minina’s consistency paid dividends. Meanwhile, on a day when many of the leading sailors posted series defining high scores, Greece’s Ariadni Spanaki turned in arguably the performance of race day four with scores of 1, 3, 2 elevating her to second in the overall and European rankings. Ellyn Tan (SIN) sits third overall while Cargo occupies the third European placing. -

Weymouth Bay Offers Some of the Best Sailing Waters in Northern Europe
Not forgetting the arrival of the Olympic Torch during its 70 day journey around the UK with 8,000 torchbearers. The involvement in the Olympics allowed the Authority to advance improvements within Weymouth Harbour; renovation and installation of shower facilities, new pontoons and quayside facilities to name a few. Accuvision Interview with Hannah Mills 11 July 2016 Hannah Won A
AccuVision Interview with Hannah Mills 11 July 2016 Hannah won a Silver Medal at London 2012 and Gold at the 2012 470 World Championships with her teammate Saskia Clarke. They are part of Team GB for Rio 2016. She recently underwent Laser Eye Surgery with AccuVision and talked to us about her experience and its impact on her life. As a professional sailor, Hannah’s life and work make huge demands on her eyes, and vision. A typical day involves going to the gym for a weights or aerobic session, followed by a 3-4 hour sailing session in the afternoon. ‘At sea, we have to spot the course and the next race mark, which can be up to 1 mile away’ Hannah explained. ‘Before I had laser eye surgery this was very challenging!’. Hannah found, like so many people dependent on glasses and contact lenses, that she often lost them or didn’t have them when she needed them. Getting face-fulls of salt water several times a day meant wearing glasses was totally impractical. Hannah and Saskia on the water ‘Choosing laser eye surgery was a definite lifestyle and work choice’ explained Hannah.’ I didn't want the hassle of wearing contacts whilst sailing - I often found they dried my eyes out, or fell out when I got a face full of water. I also figured that long term it would work out cheaper to get the eye surgery due to the cost of glasses and contact lenses’ she continued, explaining her motivation to go for Laser Eye Surgery. -

Published Date: 17/12/2011 It Might Seem a Strange Partnership
Published Date: 17/12/2011 It might seem a strange partnership, toothbrushes and the Olympic 470 dinghy, but the humble toothbrush plays an important role in the boat’s spinnaker set up and handling. We decided to find out more as to why some teams are ardent supporters of the toothbrush, whilst other teams are 100% against the approach, preferring to use the more refined sail batten to achieve the same outcome. 2008 Olympic bronze medallist Isabel Swan (BRA) was the Top 470 Toothbrushes © 470 Class perfect place to start our research. With helm Martin Grael, they are ranked #11 in the world and are on a campaign to be selected to represent Brazil at the 2012 Olympic Games. Isabel firstly explained the role the toothbrush has on the boat, “It is good to use a toothbrush, because you use the bristles of the toothbrush to stop the spinnaker halyard to go up, as we have a shockcord that makes the spinnaker tight, which is why we choose a toothbrush." The Brazilian team has shockcord tied around either end of the Elise Rechici/Belinda Stowell (AUS) toothbrush, whilst other teams have holes drilled through their toothbrushes, and Isabel explained the difference. “The tied approach works for us. When sailing, you just have to very quickly find where the toothbrush is, so you can get the spinnaker halyard. It is better than using a batten I think, even though this is a different way than people normally use toothbrushes.” Helm Martine chipped in “You really have to be careful with the toothbrush you buy as it can break. -
