Jeffrey Hiatt This dissertation examines John Wesley’s missional theology through the salvation-as-healing motif. Wesley’s own writings and pertinent secondary sources provide the resources for investigating and understanding Wesley’s missional interpretation of God’s interaction with the world. A re-examination of Wesley’s theological method, highlighting his awareness of the created order and of culture, further illuminates Wesley’s comprehensive approach to mission. To assess Wesley’s contemporary relevance, the holistic ministry of World Vision International is examined and compared with Wesley’s approach. The rubric of salvation as healing highlights and clarifies Wesley’s knowledge and understanding of God and the way God interacts with people and the whole created order. John Wesley’s emphasis on the therapeutic (in the biblical sense) nature of the gospel of Christ provides a missional basis for treating the spiritual and physical spheres of life comprehensively. Wesley’s conception of salvation incorporated physical, spiritual, social, and ultimately, cosmic healing, and thus informs the healing mission of the church. Since Wesley intentionally employed healing language to describe the work of God in the world, this dissertation traces Wesley’s comprehension and practice of healing, including the role healing concepts played in his theology, especially his soteriology, ecclesiology, and eschatology. It illuminates the ways and degrees to which Wesley’s healing practice expressed his understanding of salvation as healing and notes the relevance of this for mission today. This study concludes that Wesley’s understanding and practice of mission anticipated features characteristic of contemporary holistic mission proponents. The research calls attention to the missiological nature and character of Wesley’s ministry. It concludes that Wesley was a pioneer in certain aspects of medicine and shows how this aspect was integrated into his entire missional theology. The research provides resources for contemporary understanding and implementation of comprehensive mission within the global context and suggests areas for further investigation. David Wiggs Revised January 2017 1301 South Boston, Tulsa, Oklahoma, 74119 bostonavenue.org There is much in the media these days about how we should deal with volatile issues currently under discussion in our culture. How do we best deal with ISIS? What should we do about the minimum wage? What is the proper balance between security and freedom in these days of terrorism? How shall we deal with an emerging awareness of the complexities of human sexuality? Most of the discussions I have seen or read quickly deteriorate into unkind accusations and harsh judgments. (And many of those involved are followers of Christ.) I believe this rhetoric leaves much to be desired in terms of Christian conversation or dialogue. Surely we can do better. I would like to offer you an alternative to attacks and derisive language when discussing controversial issues, especially with our brothers and sisters in Christ. Those of us in the Boston Avenue Church family should strive to maintain high Christian standards of behavior when dealing with others who have differing opinions or divergent views. Often these issues become quickly charged with emotion, which leads us down the wrong path. In our own United Methodist tradition, we have great resources to help us. The 2016 Book of Discipline (BOD) of the United Methodist Church, which serves as the guide for our life together, gives a framework from which we develop theology and perspective on a variety of issues. Sometimes called the “Wesleyan quadrilateral,” the four parts of this framework are scripture, tradition, experience and reason.

Little-known or remarkable facts about the American Puritans Cassandra Niemczyk is an independent scholar who contributed to The Variety of American Evangelicalism (Tennessee, 1991). Critic H. L. Mencken once said, wrongly, “Puritanism is the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” On the contrary, Puritans read good books and enjoyed music. They drank beer with meals and rum at weddings. Puritans swam and skated, hunted and fished, and played at archery and bowling (as long as the games were not in a public tavern or on Sunday). The famous “Pilgrims,” who landed at Plymouth Rock in 1620, were so radical they were usually disliked and sometimes hated. Unlike most Puritans, they did not seek to reform the Church of England; they thought the church was beyond help. Most weddings in New England were performed not by ministers but by magistrates. Wedding rings, seen as “popish,” were not used. The early settlers of Massachusetts included more than 100 graduates of Oxford and Cambridge. One historian termed Massachusetts “the best-educated community the world has ever known.” In Puritan worship, a prayer could last an hour or more; a sermon, two hours. In a lifetime, a Puritan might hear 15,000 hours of preaching. Within only six years of their arrival, while still trying to hew out an existence, the Puritans founded a religious college named Harvard. Puritans wanted highly educated ministers, not “Dumme Doggs,” as they called less-trained examples. New England residents who failed to attend worship services on Sunday morning and afternoon were fined or put into stocks.

  • The Wesleyan Quadrilateral
    THE WESLEYAN QUADRILATERAL The phrase which has relatively recently come into use to describe the principal factors that John Wesley believed illuminate the core of the Christian faith for the believer. Wesley did not formulate the succinct statement now commonly referred to as the Wesley Quadrilateral. Building on the Anglican theological tradition, Wesley added a fourth emphasis, experience. The resulting four components or "sides" of the quadrilateral are (1) Scripture, (2) tradition, (3) reason, and (4) experience. For United Methodists, Scripture is considered the primary source and standard for Christian doctrine. Tradition is experience and the witness of development and growth of the faith through the past centuries and in many nations and cultures. Experience is the individual's understanding and appropriating of the faith in the light of his or her own life. Through reason the individual Christian brings to bear on the Christian faith discerning and cogent thought. These four elements taken together bring the individual Christian to a mature and fulfilling understanding of the Christian faith and the required response of worship and service. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Often when the Wesleyan Quadrilateral is cited, we make the assumption that all the sides are equal. That is to say that tradition, reason, experience and scripture all have an equal voice. However, our Book of Discipline is clear that Scripture is placed above the other disciplines. While our theological reflection needs to include wisdom that is gleaned from tradition, experience and reason, these things are never to supersede the primacy of Scripture. It would be impossible to interpret Scripture without reason. We employ reason when we examine Scriptures through our intellect. We examine a text in the original language or we analyze how others have expounded a text.
