  • Pulsating Components in Binary and Multiple Stellar Systems---A
Research in Astron. & Astrophys. Vol.15 (2015) No.?, 000–000 (Last modified: — December 6, 2014; 10:26 ) Research in Astronomy and Astrophysics Pulsating Components in Binary and Multiple Stellar Systems — A Catalog of Oscillating Binaries ∗ A.-Y. Zhou National Astronomical Observatories, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100012, China; [email protected] Abstract We present an up-to-date catalog of pulsating binaries, i.e. the binary and multiple stellar systems containing pulsating components, along with a statistics on them. Compared to the earlier compilation by Soydugan et al.(2006a) of 25 δ Scuti-type ‘oscillating Algol-type eclipsing binaries’ (oEA), the recent col- lection of 74 oEA by Liakos et al.(2012), and the collection of Cepheids in binaries by Szabados (2003a), the numbers and types of pulsating variables in binaries are now extended. The total numbers of pulsating binary/multiple stellar systems have increased to be 515 as of 2014 October 26, among which 262+ are oscillating eclipsing binaries and the oEA containing δ Scuti componentsare updated to be 96. The catalog is intended to be a collection of various pulsating binary stars across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We reviewed the open questions, advances and prospects connecting pulsation/oscillation and binarity. The observational implication of binary systems with pulsating components, to stellar evolution theories is also addressed. In addition, we have searched the Simbad database for candidate pulsating binaries. As a result, 322 candidates were extracted. Furthermore, a brief statistics on Algol-type eclipsing binaries (EA) based on the existing catalogs is given. We got 5315 EA, of which there are 904 EA with spectral types A and F.

Kaspar von Braun & Tabetha S. Boyajian Extrasolar Planets and Their Host Stars July 25, 2017 arXiv:1707.07405v1 [astro-ph.EP] 24 Jul 2017 Springer Preface In astronomy or indeed any collaborative environment, it pays to figure out with whom one can work well. From existing projects or simply conversations, research ideas appear, are developed, take shape, sometimes take a detour into some un- expected directions, often need to be refocused, are sometimes divided up and/or distributed among collaborators, and are (hopefully) published. After a number of these cycles repeat, something bigger may be born, all of which one then tries to simultaneously fit into one’s head for what feels like a challenging amount of time. That was certainly the case a long time ago when writing a PhD dissertation. Since then, there have been postdoctoral fellowships and appointments, permanent and adjunct positions, and former, current, and future collaborators. And yet, con- versations spawn research ideas, which take many different turns and may divide up into a multitude of approaches or related or perhaps unrelated subjects. Again, one had better figure out with whom one likes to work. And again, in the process of writing this Brief, one needs create something bigger by focusing the relevant pieces of work into one (hopefully) coherent manuscript. It is an honor, a privi- lege, an amazing experience, and simply a lot of fun to be and have been working with all the people who have had an influence on our work and thereby on this book. To quote the late and great Jim Croce: ”If you dig it, do it.

  • Astronomie Pentru Şcolari
NICU GOGA CARTE DE ASTRONOMIE Editura REVERS CRAIOVA, 2010 Referent ştiinţific: Prof. univ.dr.

  • Constellations
Your Guide to the CONSTELLATIONS INSTRUCTOR'S HANDBOOK Lowell L. Koontz 2002 ii Preface We Earthlings are far more aware of the surroundings at our feet than we are in the heavens above. The study of observational astronomy and locating someone who has expertise in this field has become a rare find. The ancient civilizations had a keen interest in their skies and used the heavens as a navigational tool and as a form of entertainment associating mythology and stories about the constellations. Constellations were derived from mankind's attempt to bring order to the chaos of stars above them. They also realized the celestial objects of the night sky were beyond the control of mankind and associated the heavens with religion. Observational astronomy and familiarity with the night sky today is limited for the following reasons: • Many people live in cities and metropolitan areas have become so well illuminated that light pollution has become a real problem in observing the night sky. • Typical city lighting prevents one from seeing stars that are of fourth, fifth, sixth magnitude thus only a couple hundred stars will be seen. • Under dark skies this number may be as high as 2,500 stars and many of these dim stars helped form the patterns of the constellations. • Light pollution is accountable for reducing the appeal of the night sky and loss of interest by many young people as the night sky is seldom seen in its full splendor. • People spend less time outside than in the past, particularly at night. • Our culture has developed such a profusion of electronic devices that we find less time to do other endeavors in the great outdoors.

  • Milliarcsecond Resolution Infrared Observations of the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi and Low Mass Stellar Systems”
Milliarcsecond Resolution Infrared Observations of the Recurrent Nova RS Ophiuchi and Low Mass Stellar Systems by Richard Keith Barry, Jr. A dissertation submitted to The Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Baltimore, Maryland January, 2008 c Richard Keith Barry, Jr. 2008 All rights reserved Abstract We introduce the method of long-baseline stellar interferometry starting with the fundamental combination of electric fields. We describe beam combination techniques and how they are realized at the observatories used in the conduct of this research. We subsequently give a mathematical description of the Keck Interferometer Nuller and describe our pathfinder effort to produce the first science with this instrument. We present the results of a 2.5 year observing campaign using four different observatories; the Spitzer Space Telescope, the Infrared and Optical Telescope Array on Mt. Hop- kins, Arizona, the Palomar Testbed Interferometer on Mt. Palomar, California, and the Keck Interferometer on Mauna Kea, Hawaii. We describe our observations of a broad array of low-mass binary stars and the recurrent nova RS Ophiuchi in outburst — a candidate Type Ia supernova progenitor. We present calculations that suggest a new paradigm for dust creation in recurrent novae. We explore this paradigm through analysis of line and continuum emission from near peak brightness to quiescence. We report radial velocity and astrometric model fitting on the low-mass M-dwarf binary Gliese 268. We derive masses of the constituent stars with 0.5% uncertainty. ii Dissertation Advisors Dr. William C. Danchi • Prof. Holland C. Ford • Dissertation Defense Committee Prof.

  • The Dynamical State of a Young Stellar Cluster
THE DYNAMICAL STATE OF A YOUNG STELLAR CLUSTER by TIMOTHY SULLIVAN A DISSERTATION Presented to the Graduate Faculty of the MISSOURI UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY and UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI – ST. LOUIS In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in PHYSICS 2019 Approved by Dr. Bruce Wilking, Advisor Dr. Paul Parris, Co-Advisor Dr. Tom Greene Dr. Erika Gibb Dr. Alexey Yamilov Copyright 2019 TIMOTHY SULLIVAN All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT The dynamical state of the young star-forming cluster Rho Ophiuchi is considered, with emphasis on the L1688 cloud. Radial velocities are derived for 32 YSOs, with some being multi-epoch, using Markov-Chain Monte Carlo routines based upon the package emcee. Sources are chosen based upon their spectral index to focus on the earlier stages of star formation, in this case, Class I and Flat spectrum objects, and compared with a sample of Class II and III objects from the same embedded cluster. It is found that the radial velocity dispersion for these younger objects is ∆v = 2:8 ± 0:6 km s-1 which is about 2σ higher than the dispersion for Class II and III objects. The implication is that there are either small number statistics at play, or the cluster’s dispersion is being increased as an inverse function of the distance from the center of the cluster due to a collapse-and-rebound phase that has been proposed in recent simulations. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation would not have been possible had I worked alone, and there are many people that I would like to thank.
