Young super-Neptune offers clues to the origin of close-in exoplanet 21 June 2016, by Rebecca Johnson planets in the same planetary system, or with more distant stars. These scenarios can be tested observationally by searching for young planets and studying their orbits. If the close-in population formed in place or migrated in through interactions with the natal disk, they reach their final orbital distances early on and will be found close in at young ages. In comparison, migrating a planet inward through interactions with other planets or more distant stars is effective on much longer timescales. If the latter processes dominate, planets will not be found close to their K2-33 b, shown in this illustration, is one of the youngest stars when they are young. exoplanets detected to date. It makes a complete orbit around its star in about five days. These two characteristics combined provide exciting new directions for planet-formation theories. K2-33b could have formed on a farther out orbit and quickly migrated inward. Alternatively, it could have formed in situ, or in place. The discovery lends unique insights into K2-33b, compared to our own solar system. -

It consists of a humorous 24-minute show and educator’s package. The Orion Educator’s Guide is designed for Planetarians, Teachers, and parents. The information is researched, organized, and laid out so that the educator need not spend hours coming up with lesson plans or labs. This has already been accomplished by certified educators. The guide is written to alleviate the fear of space and the night sky (that many elementary and middle school teachers have) when it comes to that section of the science lesson plan. It is an excellent tool that allows the parents to be a part of the learning experience. The guide is devised in such a way that there are plenty of visuals to assist the educator and student in finding the Winter constellations. -

Appendix A: Scientific Notation Since in astronomy we often have to deal with large numbers, writing a lot of zeros is not only cumbersome, but also inefficient and difficult to count. Scientists use the system of scientific notation, where the number of zeros is short handed to a superscript. For example, 10 has one zero and is written as 101 in scientific notation. Similarly, 100 is 102, 100 is 103. So we have: 103 equals a thousand, 106 equals a million, 109 is called a billion (U.S. usage), and 1012 a trillion. Now the U.S. federal government budget is in the trillions of dollars, ordinary people really cannot grasp the magnitude of the number. In the metric system, the prefix kilo- stands for 1,000, e.g., a kilogram. For a million, the prefix mega- is used, e.g. megaton (1,000,000 or 106 ton). A billion hertz (a unit of frequency) is gigahertz, although I have not heard of the use of a giga-meter. More rarely still is the use of tera (1012). For small numbers, the practice is similar. 0.1 is 10À1, 0.01 is 10À2, and 0.001 is 10À3. The prefix of milli- refers to 10À3, e.g. as in millimeter, whereas a micro- second is 10À6 ¼ 0.000001 s. It is now trendy to talk about nano-technology, which refers to solid-state device with sizes on the scale of 10À9 m, or about 10 times the size of an atom. With this kind of shorthand convenience, one can really go overboard. -

1 Astrometry and optics during the past 2000 years Erik Høg Niels Bohr Institute, Copenhagen, Denmark 2011.05.03: Collection of reports from November 2008 ABSTRACT: The satellite missions Hipparcos and Gaia by the European Space Agency will together bring a decrease of astrometric errors by a factor 10000, four orders of magnitude, more than was achieved during the preceding 500 years. This modern development of astrometry was at first obtained by photoelectric astrometry. An experiment with this technique in 1925 led to the Hipparcos satellite mission in the years 1989-93 as described in the following reports Nos. 1 and 10. The report No. 11 is about the subsequent period of space astrometry with CCDs in a scanning satellite. This period began in 1992 with my proposal of a mission called Roemer, which led to the Gaia mission due for launch in 2013. My contributions to the history of astrometry and optics are based on 50 years of work in the field of astrometry but the reports cover spans of time within the past 2000 years, e.g., 400 years of astrometry, 650 years of optics, and the “miraculous” approval of the Hipparcos satellite mission during a few months of 1980. 2011.05.03: Collection of reports from November 2008. La photosynthèse serait apparue chez certains organismes primitifs entre 2.800 et -2.400 millions d’années si l’on en croit certaines archives géologiques terrestres. Mais certains la font remonter bien plus tôt en faisant l’hypothèse que les stromatolites que l’on retrouve dans des couches plus anciennes encore sont bien le produit d’une activité biologique. Actuellement, nous n’en sommes sûrs que pour ceux datant de -2.724 millions d’années mais des stromatolites existaient déjà sur Terre il y a 3,5 milliards d’années environ. Quoiqu'il en soit, une certitude demeure, concernant les immenses dépôts de fer du bassin de Hamersley en Australie. Ils datent de l’époque du Sidérien alors que la surface des continents était devenue suffisamment importante pour que se forment des mers peu profondes entourées de grande plates-formes continentales. Les conditions étaient remplies pour que de grands tapis de bactéries construisent des stromatolites en quantités importantes et dégagent massivement de l’oxygène par photosynthèse. Ce gaz corrosif a alors pu oxyder le fer en solution dans les océans et entraîner sa précipitation sous forme d’hydroxyde de fer, de carbonate de fer, de silicate ou de sulfures, selon des variations de l’acidité et du degré d’oxydoréduction de l’eau de mer. C’est ce qu’on appelle la Grande oxydation ou la Catastrophe de l’oxygène. Vers -1.900 millions d’années, la presque totalité du fer présent dans les océans avait précipité et il se retrouve aujourd’hui dans les grands gisements de minerai mondiaux tels que ceux de Hamersley. -

Now that we’re on the new format, business meetings (and the oft neglected Light Pollution Committee Meeting), are going to start being open to all members of the club again by simply joining up in the respective chat rooms the Wednesday before the first Monday of the month—which I encourage people to do, especially if you have some ideas you want to see the club put into action. -

Das Orakel von Delphi prophezeite ihm, sein Enkelsohn werde ihn einst töten. Aus Furcht vor diesem Orakelspruch ließ Akrisios seine Tochter Danae in einen Turm einschließen, damit sie keinen Mann empfangen könne. Akrisios konnte natürlich nicht wissen, dass Zeus selbst sich der liebreizenden Danae nähern wollte. Zeus tat dies auch und nahm dazu die Form eines goldenen Regens an, der durch die Wände, Fugen, Ritzen und Fenster drang. Danae gebar einen Sohn, welcher "Der aus fließendem Gold entstandene" oder auch "Der Goldgeborene" genannt wurde - eben den Perseus. Akrisios blieb dies natürlich nicht lange verborgen und er ließ seine Tochter und sein Enkelkind in einen Kasten einnageln, der dann ins Meer geworfen wurde. Danae und Perseus trieben lange Zeit auf dem Meer, bis sie schließlich an der Küste der steinigen Insel Seriphos strandeten und aus ihrem Gefängnis befreit wurden. Auf dieser Insel herrschte Polydektes, der bald jahrelang um die schöne Danae warb, jedoch vergebens. Entweder um Danae doch noch zur Ehe zu zwingen oder um Perseus aus dem Weg zu schaffen, schickte er den inzwischen zum Jüngling herangewachsenen Sohn der Danae aus, eine tödliche Aufgabe zu erledigen. Er solle das Haupt der Medusa zu holen. Die Medusa war eine der Gorgonen, eine der drei Töchter des Phorkys, die mit Schlangenhaaren ausgestattet waren und einen versteinernden Blick werfen konnten.
