Domaine La Soufrandière La Soufrandière is our family’s estate, purchased in 1947 by our paternal grandparents. In 2000, we officially took over La Soufrandière and its 4.5 hectares of Pouilly Vinzelles planted on the best, east/southeast-facing clay-limestone slope in the village. Then, in 2004, our maternal grandfather entrusted his one hectare Clos

in Mâcon-Vinzelles to us. As of 2016, we were lucky enough to acquire 5 hectares of q< organically farmed vines: 3.5 hectares in Saint-Véran, 1.2 hectares in Pouilly Fuissé, and 1.2 hectares of Bourgogne Aligoté. We decided to work Organically and Biodynamically from the start. As we see it, an agriculture respecting the Living environment is the only way to produce wines with exceptional balance, that vibrate with energy and reveal their terroir. Maintaining balance between the Soil and Vine allows us to produce small berries that are balanced and rich in phenolics and organic acids that are essential to optimal grape ripening. The grapes are harvested by hand in small cases, then

crushed, pressed and vinified in barrels or in tanks, with the indigenous yeasts naturally present on the grape skins. The aging period varies from 11 to 18 months depending on the cuvée. Jean-Philippe & Jean-Guillaume BRET

La Soufrandière is located in Vinzelles, in Southern Burgundy 1st vintage vinified by J-Phi & J-Gui at La Soufrandière: 2000

2019 Vintage : The 2019 vintage is another revelatory one in the ongoing series, “Chronicles of a Deregulated Climate,” that defines the past two decades of climatic conditions in the vineyards. After the heat waves and droughts of these past few years, the winter of 2019 was particularly mild in the Mâconnais. Once again, the risk of spring frost was imminent. Rain fell at the start of April, followed two days later by a clear, star-studded night, without a cloud in sight to help conserve any heat in the atmosphere. And as predicted, on April 4th the still humid, just emerging buds were frosted. A large portion of parcels at the bottom of the slope of the Mâconnais and Beaujolais were hit hard. For our domaine, a young vineyard was 100% damaged, and the Clos de Grand Père lost 60% of its production. Very fortunately, the slopes where most of our vines are located were saved at 90-95%. We remained at risk for other episodes of frost through the end of April, but drier conditions saved the young buds despite the continued negative temperatures (C°) that ensued. Flowering began in early June, with a hot and dry summer to follow, and harvest began on September 10th, finishing on the 21st. In the end, yields were down mostly due to the colder spring’s effect at flowering. But we’re happy to enjoy the results of this beautiful vintage, full of charm and character. Cheers!!

BRET BROTHERS We created Bret Brothers in early August 2001 with the aim of making great terroir-driven wines, primarily from Southern Burgundy. We expanded the line up to include the great Beaujolais Crus in 2013.

We strictly adhere to a number of rigorous standards: we select micro-plots of old vines farmed by passionate growers on specific terroirs; we buy only grapes that are still on the vine; we hand-pick the grapes ourselves; we vinify exclusively with indigenous yeasts; we cellar, age, and bottle the wine ourselves. We give the same care and passion to these grapes as for the grapes coming from our Domaine La Soufrandière.

Since the 2019 vintage, 100% of the wines will be certified by Ecocert “organic” or “in conversion to organic”.

Great Mâconnais white wines (Southern Burgundy) and Beaujolais Crus 1 Wine = 1 Parcel = 1 Grower (except Mâcon-Villages ‘Terroirs du Mâconnais’) Selection of old vines (at least 40 years old), 100% chardonnay, 100% gamay Hand-harvesting by the BRET BROTHERS’ team Since 2019, 100% of the purchased grapes are organic or in conversion certified Total of 14 ‘micro-cuvées’ (900 to 6,000 bottles per wine) Annual production: 50,000 bottles 100% indigenous yeasts for alcoholic fermentation Most of the wines are vinified and aged in Burgundian barrels (7 to 18 years old)

The Wines of Domaine La S oufrandière :

Cuvées « Zen » This is the second time we’re proposing a “Zen” version of multiple cuvées, with no added sulfur until bottling. For these wines, the total added sulfur is less than 20 mg/l. Total added sulfur is generally 40-50 mg/l for the other Bret and Soufrandière whites, and 20-40 mg/l for the reds, levels which are already quite low. For comparison, the Biodynamic certification association Demeter allows 90 mg/l total sulfur, Organic wine can be up to 150 mg/l, and non-certified wines can go as high as 210 mg/l. As a result, the Zen cuvées are more open and vibrant, with a stroke of magic. They should be stored at 15°C maximum. And they’re very limited!

BOURGOGNE ALIGOTE CUVEE « ALIGATO » « Zen » La Soufrandière 2019 : Limited production (1200 bottles) “The other white Burgundy,” from vines acquired in 2016. This is a micro-production of Aligoté from east-facing vines, at the foot of the Roche de . 2018 is for those who love tense wines. Almost incisive, and yet so gourmand!

MACON-VINZELLES La Soufrandière « LE CLOS DE GRAND-PERE » 2019 : The younger brother of our Pouilly-Vinzelles, our MÂCON-VINZELLES “LE CLOS DE GRAND PÈRE” comes from a plot belonging to our maternal grandfather, who inherited it from his own maternal grandfather! The vines, 60 years old on average, are located on a hard limestone terrace, which is believed to be an old Roman path, at the bottom of the slope in Pouilly-Vinzelles. In 2018, notes of white flowers on the nose and a noble bitterness on the palate invite a second sip SAINT-VERAN CUVEE «LA COMBE DESROCHES» La Soufrandière 2019 : We acquired this beautiful parcel of about 1.5 hectares in 2016. Located at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson, on the north- facing hillside of a stunning valley, its soils of marl and clay are ideal for Chardonnay. The grapes achieve lovely ripeness despite this cooler terroir. A terroir for the future. An elegant wine in 2016, ideal at the start of a meal.

SAINT-VERAN CLIMAT «LA BONNODE » La Soufrandière 2019 : Neighbor to “Combe DesRoches,” “La Bonnode” is a superb parcel of 2 hectares, facing east at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson. The vines are mostly bordered by old brush: a sheltered, isolated situation that allows us to biodynamically cultivate the vines with ease. Working in this parcel, we can see across the Saône Valley all the way to the Mont Blanc in the distance to the east. This first vintage confirms our hopes: this is a great terroir for whites, with both tension and fruit. Cheers!

SAINT-VERAN CUVEE «LA CARBONNODE » « Zen » La Soufrandière 2019 : La Carbonnode is the result of a Carbonic maceration on La Bonnode. This is a truly unique cuvée, made with a whole cluster fermentation on our Chardonnay grapes. After a 10-day maceration in a closed tank, the grapes were pressed, and fermentation finished in barrel (228 liters). With a slightly orange tint, a zesty and expressive nose, it’s an enticing, outside-the-box kind of wine. An exercise in changing the world while sharing a bottle amongst friends ;-) 2018. A favorite !

SAINT-VERAN CUVEE « OVOÏDE « Zen » La Soufrandière 2019 : As of this year, we’re proposing another version of our Saint-Véran La Bonnode. The juice fermented naturally in a cement ovoid tank (19hl) for one year, with no added sulfur. In August, the wine was racked to stainless steel tank for a final ageing period on fine lees. It will be bottled, without filtration, in January 2020. A pure, magnificent, ethereal wine. One rediscovers Chardonnay in a new light. The experiment will continue with a second ovoid tank in 2019. 2018. A favorite !

POUILLY-FUISSE « AU VIGNERAIS » La Soufrandière 2019 : Our parcel of about 0.50 ha is on the southern hillside of the Roche de Solutré, at about 300 meters’ altitude. The view is magnificent and the clay-limestone soils are particularly red here. These small grapes allow us to extract the full potential of this terroir, which will probably be classed as 1er Cru. A wine with beautiful fruit, in 2018.

POUILLY-VINZELLES La Soufrandière 2019 : The AOC Pouilly-Vinzelles is only 50 ha in comparison to the neighboring AOC Pouilly-Fuissé, with its 750 ha. But doesn’t this stricter limitation signify a rarer and even more unique terroir? This great white Burgundy expresses the full potential of Chardonnay from the Southern Mâconnais. Our wine is a blend of our “younger vines” (35 to 50 years old) in “Les Quarts.” The vines have a magnificent southeastern exposure, located at the mid-slope on clay and limestone. The soils are plowed and vineyard work is carried out manually to avoid compacting the soil, which thus thrives naturally. The word “Terroir” takes on its full meaning here! 2018 is simply magical.

POUILLY-VINZELLES La Soufrandière CLIMAT « LES LONGEAYS » 2019 : “Les Longeays” is one of the three most distinct climats in the appellation. Like in “Les Quarts”, the vines in “Les Longeays” face southeast and are located at mid-slope, but the clay soils, rich in oxidized iron and manganese, are deeper here. This characteristic explains the vineyard’s tendency to ripen early, year after year, often making “Les Longeays” more expressive in its youth than “Les Quarts”.

POUILLY-VINZELLES La Soufrandière CLIMAT « LES QUARTS » 2019 (CLASSIC & « Zen ») : Walk, listen, smell. You are in the middle of the plowed La Soufrandière vineyard of Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat “Les Quarts,” on a terroir that we think is one of the best in Burgundy. Maybe we’re biased by our endless love for it, or maybe it’s because we just know it deep down. The pinnacle, an old shelter with a roof covered in varnished tiles, stands like a guardian. The earth here is soft, aerated, perfumed. It is alive. The soul of the terroir is undeniably present. With an almost magical exposure at the top of a southeast-facing slope, our oldest Chardonnay vines (45 to 80 years old) are rooted in an active limestone and clay soil (Bajocian, rich with siliceous crystals), giving birth to powerful, age-worthy wines. The nose is citrusy and mineral, and the balanced palate shows complexity and a long finish. As vintages go by, the terroir remains; it’s up to us to preserve it! The tension and structure in 2018 make this a great Burgundy! Favorite for both version, « classic » and « Zen ».

POUILLY-VINZELLES La Soufrandière CLIMAT « LES QUARTS » Cuvée Millerandée 2019 : (900 bottles+300 Magnum) Some advise us to replant these vines: “they are deteriorating! You must replant with new clones!” That would be a sacrilege, a crime against biodiversity. From the beginning, we decided to vinify this part of “Les Quarts” separately to showcase its 80+ year-old vines. Since 2000, thanks to a return of biological activity in the soils, these vines rediscovered their energy and strength. They always produce small grapes that we call “Millerandés”: highly concentrated berries that give a richer version of Quarts, with no residual sugar. In 2016, Le Montrachet has competition! ;-)

THE ‘BRET BROTHERS’ GREAT WHITE MACONNAIS AND RED BEAUJOLAIS WINES :

MEN IN BRET XIX : ORGANIC CONVERSION An atypical cuvée made with the G….. grape, sourced from 4 villages of the B……..In 2019, it’s a blend of the bottom of each barrel of our red wines, which were troubled by the lees, but after a natural clarification period yielded a lovely wine.

BEAUJOLAIS-LANTIGNIE CUVEE « GLOU DES BRET » 2019 : The village of Lantignié lies next door to the Beaujolais Cru of Régnié. Its pink granite and blue sandstone soils reflect the mountainous nature of the village. With 100% whole cluster vinification, our Lantignié planted on pink granite became the "Glou de Bret" this year. It was vinified using our "Zen" method. 2019 - Delicious!

BROUILLY CLIMAT« LA PILONNIERE » 2019 ORGANIC CONVERSION: This is the Beaujolais’ southernmost Cru. The clay/limestone-based parcel of la “Pilonnière” was frosted at over 50% in 2019, so we blended it with another blue schist-based cuvée. This is the only red wine that we completely de-stemmed, though it remains a “Zen” cuvée (meaning there is no added sulfur at vinification). It’s only at bottling that we add a small dose

FLEURIE CLIMAT « PONCIE » 2019: ORGANIC CONVERSION The latest addition to the lineup of reds! We are thrilled to showcase this great terroir from the top of the slope in Fleurie. Planted on pink granites in the lieu-dit “Poncié,” the vines face southwest and produce beautiful, small grapes. After a “Zen,” 10-day carbonic maceration, the wine continues to ferment and age in 8-year-old barrels. A racy wine, with subtle notes of licorice. JULIENAS CLIMAT « LA BOTTIERE » 2019 : Juliénas is one of the northernmost Crus of the Beaujolais. Bottière is a beautiful terroir! This is a throwback to classic Beaujolais from another era. Fermented with 100% whole clusters, carbonic fermentation, and a slow press. The sugars finished in Burgundian barrel. An illuminated, bright wine, with delicate aromas that invite one to taste its nectar. 2018, a huge favorite!

MACON-VILLAGES CUVEE « TERROIRS DU MACONNAIS » 2019 ORGANIC CONVERSION: This is our only blended cuvée, including grapes from Mâcon-Villages, Mâcon-Chaintré, Mâcon-Fuissé, Viré-Clessé, Saint-Véran and the Pouillys. But do not be misled: this is an excellent wine, with quality far beyond your basic entry-level! It is ideal with goat cheese from the Mâconnais! The 2016 is extraordinary!

MACON-CHARDONNAY : BACK IN 2020

MACON-CHARDONNAY CLIMAT « LES CRAYS » 2019 : What a gorgeous terroir in the hamlet of Champvent, just next door to Chardonnay. The name itself conveys minerality. White limestone rocks lay scattered throughout the clay soil of this parcel, exposed due west. This version is even fuller and more precise than its predecessor. What a wine in 2018! Aromatic, with energy and length. Irresistible!

MACON-IGE CLIMAT « LES VERNAYES » 2019 : ORGANIC CONVERSION This new cuvée comes from the village of Igé, located in a long valley of clay-limestone soils that extends from La Roche Vineuse in the South to in the North, passing through the villages of Verzé, Igé, Azé and Bissy-La Mâconnaise along the way. This beautiful parcel is located on a moderate slope (20% incline), facing East with the Mont Blanc often visible in the distance. It’s a pleasant, fruit-forward wine, mostly vinified in tank.

VIRE-CLESSE CLIMAT « LA VERCHERE » 2019 : AOC Viré-Clessé unites the two AOCs Mâcon-Clessé and Mâcon-Viré, and has been a Mâconnais Cru since 1999, (with Pouilly- Fuissé, Pouilly-Loché, Pouilly-Vinzelles and Saint-Véran). Our Viré-Clessé Climat “La Verchère” comes from 60+ year-old vines in the village of Viré, north of Mâcon. This beautiful east-facing parcel on clay-limestone soils reveals terroir of Viré in all its nobility. A racy, mineral nose. A sure bet in 2018!

VIRE-CLESSE CLIMAT « SOUS LES PLANTES » 2019 : The Climat “Sous Les Plantes” is located in southern Viré, right at the border of Clessé. The soil is silty with limestone underneath. “I beg your pardon? Did you say silty?” Well, yes, great Burgundy may also grow on soils other than clay and limestone. The soils are plowed, and the old vines (65 to 80 years old) produce small, consistently ripe grapes. A riper style

POUILLY-LOCHE CLIMAT « LA COLONGE » 2019 : There are only 30 hectares of vines in the smallest Mâconnais appellation. Perhaps this makes it the twin sister of Pouilly- History

Vinzelles (50 ha)? Yes and no, as even though the appellation is small, there are two distinct types of soils: one that is atypical 1947: La Soufrandière, a historic estate in Vinzelles in the Southern Mâconnais, was bought by Jules and composed of schists, and another with clay-limestone similar to the Climat “Les Buchardières” in Pouilly-Vinzelles. Our Pouilly-Loché ‘La Colonge’ is found on this second version, exposed east. Always charming and round, even in 2018. Bret (Jean-Philippe, Jean-Guillaume and Marc-Antoine’s paternal grandfather), a professor of medicine. The surface area planted to vines made up just one hectare (2.47 acres), all in the AOC Pouilly- POUILLY-FUISSE CUVEE « TERRES DE VERGISSON » 2019 : Vinzelles Climat "Les Quarts". The only remaining testimony to its past viticultural life was a This cuvée comes from the most mineral terroir in the appellation. Let yourself be guided by the mineral tension and vibrancy of the wine, which seems to ricochet throughout the rocky circle of land between the Roches de Solutré and Vergisson ;-) 90% of “tinailler” (a traditional Mâconnais house used as a vat-room) complete with an old-fashioned wine this cuvée comes from the magnificent northern slope of the Roches de Solutré, even if it is officially within the commune of press. The resulting crop was vinified POUILLY-FUISSE CLIMAT « EN CAREMENTRANT » 2019 : and commercialized by the local Cooperative (Cave Coopérative de Vinzelles). The relatively deep soils are composed of limestone scree, producing small, concentrated 1969: Jean-Paul BRET, the third son of Jules and Louise Bret’s four children, became manager of La (millerandé) grapes that we absolutely love for the particularly concentrated juice they yield. Vinzelles Climat "Les Quarts" and 0.55 ha of Pouilly-Vinzelles Climat "Les Longeays".

POUILLY-FUISSE CLIMAT « SUR LA ROCHE » 2019 : ‘Sur La Roche’ is without a doubt THE noblest terroir in Vergisson, exposed east at the foot of the Roche de Vergisson.
