    Racial double standards? The case of expected performance and dismissals of head coaches in NBA Carlos Gomez-Gonzalez, Julio del Corral, Andrés Maroto ABSTRACT Professional basketball in the US provides an opportunity to test racial differences in the labor market. In contrast to other professional sports, such as baseball or American football, and, more deeply, to other economic sectors, black Americans are represented in influencing positions as head coaches in this competitive setting. The paper investigates the influence of the race of the coach and performance (winning ratio and an efficiency index relative to expectations) on dismissal decisions. The data includes coach- team information over a 20-year period of time in the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the analysis uses several probit models. The results show that black head coaches are more likely to be fired and less prone to quit than white head coaches, ceteris paribus. In recent years, although African Americans still face barriers to access leadership jobs in certain sectors, they have successfully scale top positions in professional sports, particularly in basketball.

Wells Athlon Sports, Inc. 2006 ESRI International User Conference Proceedings Abstract The NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament is one of the most popular events in both athletics and entertainment. Each year, millions of people watch the games, but not only that: they also bet on the games; travel hundreds or thousands of miles to see their teams play; and most importantly - they compete in NCAA Tournament bracket contests. This study takes a look a historical NCAA Tournament results since 1985 (the year the tournament expanded to 64 teams), to determine whether or not there is a spatial correlation between the distance of competing teams to their game sites, based on either their seeding and/or the Vegas lines, relative to their success in Tournament games. The end result will be not only the results of the study, but also a fascinating visualization of the last 20 years of the NCAA tournament. Introduction: Each year around the Ides of March, sports fans across the United March Madness States are obsessively captured by the frenzy of the National Collegiate Athletic Administration (NCAA) Men’s Basketball Tournament. What was once a niche market shared primarily by the teams, cheerleaders, alumni, and fans of such schools as UCLA, the University of Kentucky, and the University of North Carolina, has over time become a cultural phenomenon. The NBA once again received men’s sports only A+ for racial hiring practices and men’s sports only B+ for gender hiring practices with scores of 97.4 points (up from 96.4) and 88 points (up from 86.5), respectively. The overall grade was an A with 92.7 points, up from 90.9 in the 2014 RGRC. The NBA was the best for all three categories among the men’s professional sports and achieved the highest grade for racial hiring practices in the history of men’s professional sport. Richard Lapchick, the director of The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES or The Institute) and primary author of the report, stated, “No other men’s league reaches the same points for race, gender or the combined score. The NBA remains the industry leader among men’s sports for racial hiring practices. While they did well overall for gender, especially in the League Office, women were still not well represented at the senior team levels and attention needs to be paid there.
