The Bear Paw News Second Edition Tuesday, October 31, 2017 Who’s Who in Ogdensburg Ogdensburg School Crossing Guard By Laura S. Marty Valdivez is the crossing guard here at Ogdensburg School. Each day, he helps 20 kids cross the road and directs 200 cars. Mr. Valdivez has been the school’s crossing guard for 15 years with a perfect attendance. Mr. Valdivez’s father lived in Ogdensburg and worked for the New Jersey Zinc Company. Mr. Valdivez was born and raised in Ogdensburg which makes this town and school very special to him. He served in the Army during the Korean War for four years. When he retired from the Army he continued to do what he loved which was doing police work. He was a special officer for around five years. He is married and had one child, which he lost during the Vietnam War. He and his wife like to drive around in their 1972 Eldorado convertible in nice weather. When he is going to work he will be in his pickup truck, which you will see him in most of the time. Mr. Valdivez also has a Cadillac and considers himself a car lover. Before Mr. Valdivez became the crossing guard he was a deck builder. One day he was in the Ogdensburg Diner and Chief Lott came in and asked for Mr. Valdivez to meet him right away. He didn’t know what Chief Lott wanted, so he didn’t go and see him that day. A few days later, Mr. Valdivez got stopped by a police officer and was then handed an application and told to go to the station right away. After that, Chief Lott made him the substitute crossing guard. Then, the regular crossing guard became sick, and Mr. Valdivez became the full time crossing guard. If it were not for Chief Lott, he probably wouldn’t be in this field. His official title is crossing guard, but he is also a school guard and traffic cop. He gets paid well for what he does and says, “It is a very important job and I am proud to serve my community.” We are happy to have him as the school crossing guard of Ogdensburg School. Who’s Who in Ogdensburg School Alexa - Vice President of the Student Council By Elaina N. Alexa L. is in middle school and is in the 7th grade. She is involved in Student Council and she has many different types of ideas to help make our school a better place. What would you like to see happen this year with our school? “I want to be able to bring back water bottles.” Water bottles are a big issue with the school. Being able to bring them back would be a difficult task. Water bottles were previously banned from our school because of its major distraction. People were wrinkling the water bottles and constantly flipping them. They also became a hazard with our recent upgrade of being able to bring our Chromebooks around the school. Why did you decide to run for office? “I ran for office because I like taking on responsibilities.” Alexa was a homeroom representative in 6th grade. What extracurricular activities would you like to see become part of our school? “An extracurricular activity that could be new is a club that believes in all different types of sexualities.” Some people may not feel accepted in today's society and having a club may make people feel more welcome. If you could choose any sport to become part of our school, what would it be? “I would love to have a lacrosse team.” Lacrosse is the fastest growing sport today and our school doesn’t have one. The small size of our school plays a factor in that because there are other sports that people are committed to. What would you like to add to our school to make it a better and safer place? “Something more educational would be focusing more on our work.” Focus is a main priority to have during the school time. Are there any rules you would like to make changes to? If so, what ones? “I believe that the dress code should change. Girls need to be able to express themselves.” Girls are constantly getting dress code violations and there needs to be a change to that. Would you like to help Antonio and your other fellow Student Council officers be able to allow backpacks in our school? “Yes, I would really enjoy that.” Backpacks would allow us to be safer with our chromebooks and have our other supplies with us at all times. When do you think major changes will happen to our school? “I think eventually everybody adapts for being responsible.” Most of the younger kids can be a little wild, but once they get older then they will become more mature. What is one of your personal ideas to change the school for the better? “I believe that being able to have a study hall and allowing phones at recess and lunch would be a positive change.” Study halls will allow people who don’t like to play games in recess to have a option to go to a study hall. Phones will allow people to listen to music to stay focused and not talk. Did your experience with class representative help your leadership skills for becoming vice president? “Yes, it did. I saw bigger responsibilities of being VP or P.” Becoming class representative helps people become more responsible and people will look up to them.
