The reintroduction of dingoes into sheep-grazing areas south-east of the dingo barrier fence has been suggested as a mechanism to suppress fox and feral-cat impacts. Using the Western Division of New South Wales as a case study, Dickman et al. (2009) recently assessed the risk of fox and cat predation to extant threatened species and concluded that reintroducing dingoes into the area would have positive effects for most of the threatened vertebrates there, aiding their recovery through trophic cascade effects. However, they did not formally assess the risk of dingo predation to the same threatened species. Aims. To assess the risk of dingo predation to the extant and locally extinct threatened vertebrates of western New South Wales using methods amenable to comparison with Dickman et al. (2009). Methods. The predation-risk assessment method used in Dickman et al. (2009) for foxes and cats was applied here to dingoes, with minor modification to accommodate the dietary differences of dingoes. This method is based on six independent biological attributes, primarily reflective of potential vulnerability characteristics of the prey.

    NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee Publication date: 15/05/2020 -14/08/2020 Notice of and reason for the Final Determination The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee, established under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 (the Act), has made a Final Determination to list Amytornis modestus inexpectatus (Matthews, 1912), Thick-billed Grasswren, as an EXTINCT SPECIES in Part 1 of Schedule 3 of the Act and, as a consequence, to omit reference to Amytornis modestus inexpectatus as an Critically Endangered species in Part 4 of Schedule 1 of the Act. Listing of Species Presumed Extinct is provided for by Part 4 of the Act. Summary of Conservation Assessment Amytornis modestus inexpectatus is eligible to be listed as an Extinct species. The NSW Threatened Species Scientific Committee has found that: 1. Amytornis modestus inexpectatus (Matthews, 1912) (Thick-billed Grasswren) (Maluridae), is currently listed as a Critically Endangered species in the Act. 2. Amytornis modestus (North, 1902) (Thick-billed Grasswren) is one of 11 presently recognised species within the purely continental Australian genus Amytornis (Black 2016). Until recently the species A. textilis was recognised across Australia, however since 2010 the eastern and western populations have been placed in A. m. modestus (Thick-billed Grasswren) and Amytornis textilis (Western Grasswren), respectively (Christidis et al. 2010). A recent taxonomic assessment identified seven subspecies of A. modestus (Black 2011, 2016; Austin et al. 2013): five subspecies are extant - A. m. cowarie (South Australia [SA]), A. m. curnamona (SA); A. m. indulkanna (SA, Northern Territory [NT]); A. m. obscurior (NSW, far south Queensland [Qld]); and A. m.

Exhaustive surveys in known and/or expected habitat, at appropriate times (diurnal, seasonal, annual), and throughout its historical range have failed to record any individuals. Habitat change within the inferred range of this species has been substantial and remaining suitable habitat is uncommon and considered to be comprehensively surveyed. Description and Taxonomy Amytornis modestus (North, 1902) (Thick-billed Grasswren) is one of 11 presently recognised species within the purely continental Australian genus Amytornis (Black 2016). Until recently the species A. textilis was recognised across Australia, however since 2010 the eastern and western populations have been placed in A.m modestus (Thick-billed Grasswren) and Amytornis textilis (Western Grasswren), respectively (Christidis et al. 2010). Please update the committee on funding information provided in your submission, particularly around funding for Landcare and any updated examples of projects. Please also include updated information on funding for new control methods, and an update on funding for CISS. The table at Attachment A shows new projects funded by the Regional Land Partnerships under the National Landcare Program Phase Two that are contributing to feral deer, pig or goat control. These projects also include components of work that are not addressing directly the impacts of deer, pigs or goats. A number of additional projects contain an element of addressing the impacts of deer, pigs or goats but these are minor components of the projects and have not been included in this table. Projects from 2011-2018 are contained within the Department’s submission. Two further case studies are provided, one on a completed National Landcare Program project on feral pigs and a second project that is in its early stages under the National Landcare Program Regional Land Partnerships controlling sambar deer to protect a Ramsar listed wetland. Case Study: Queensland Channel Country feral pig control, monitoring and community empowerment. This project managed feral pigs within the Channel Country. Building on previous work conducted by Desert Channels Queensland since 2011, the project integrated monitoring and aerial shooting programs for feral pigs, demonstrating to Land Managers the value of control in the Lake Eyre Basin.
