Plenty to Ponder Ahead of Deadline Cheveldayoff Has Options Before Trade Window Closes on Monday
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/jets-only-worry-about-the-next-game-not- trade-rumours-474509663.html Plenty to ponder ahead of deadline Cheveldayoff has options before trade window closes on Monday By: Mike McIntyre A blockbuster move? A depth piece or two? Nothing at all? Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff says all options are on the table heading into Monday’s NHL trade deadline — and plenty of intrigue surrounds what the local squad might do. The Jets resemble a Stanley Cup contender and have the prime opportunity they’ve been building toward for years. "I couldn’t tell you with a crystal ball what we’re going to be talking about Monday with respect to additions, or not, with our group," Cheveldayoff said Tuesday in a wide-ranging conversation with the Free Press. Cheveldayoff made it clear that while he’s willing to move draft picks and prospects to help his team win now, there are a few untouchables. While he wouldn’t identify them by name, one has to think young players such as Kyle Connor, Jack Roslovic and 2017 first-round pick Kristian Vesalainen might be among them. "We have assets within this organization — whether they’re picks or prospects — and there’s going to be a threshold that will be determined as to whether we will use them or not," Cheveldayoff said. "There’s some assets within our organization that I will not use. If there’s the right fit, and the right deal, then certainly I’d be willing to do that. -

Press Clips February 26, 2019
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips February 26, 2019 Maple Leafs’ 4-goal 2nd period sinks Sabres 5-3 Associated Press February 25, 2019 TORONTO (AP) — Auston Matthews set a franchise record for the Maple Leafs on Monday night. However his focus is on the rest of Toronto’s season. Matthews scored in a four-goal second period and Toronto downed the Buffalo Sabres 5-3 on Monday night. Matthews’ goal made him the first Maple Leafs player to score 30 or more goals in the first three seasons of his career. “It’s pretty humbling,” said Matthews, who had 40 goals in his rookie season and 34 last season. “Luckily my first years I played with great players on any given night. Guys that can move the puck and make plays. “I just do what I do. I’m kind of a shoot-first guy, try to score, it’s how I’ve always been.” John Tavares, Frederik Gauthier and Tyler Ennis also scored in Toronto’s four-goal second period as the Maple Leafs held on for their second straight win. Kasperi Kapanen added some insurance with a short-handed goal in the third. Toronto general manager Kyle Dubas was fairly quiet on the NHL’s trade deadline Monday afternoon, only sending Par Lindholm to the Winnipeg Jets for Nic Petan in a swap of forwards. Toronto’s big move came on Jan. 29 when it acquired veteran defenseman Jake Muzzin in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings. Matthews felt it was important to get a statement win after the trade deadline had passed and to carry some momentum into the final months of the season. -
Dano Sits and Waits in Hockey's No Man's Land
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/dano-sits-and-waits-in-hockeys-no- mans-land-464051793.html Dano sits and waits in hockey's no man's land By: Mike McIntyre Marko Dano is trapped in purgatory, in what amounts to a professional hockey version of no man’s land. The 23-year-old Winnipeg Jets forward has been a healthy scratch for 22 consecutive games, with no end to his press-box banishment in sight. Yet the brass apparently think enough of him that they don’t want to risk losing him on waivers to another team by trying to send him down to the Manitoba Moose. So he sits, knowing the only shot he has at seeing game action is if a couple of his teammates were to be felled by injuries or if Winnipeg’s play suddenly went into a tailspin. It’s the type of situation that might have some players on the phone with their agent, demanding a one-way ticket out of town. But Dano told the Free Press on Wednesday that while he’s frustrated, he hasn’t asked for a trade and has no plans to do so. "Yeah, everyone wants to play, and now the team’s doing well. That’s great, and I’m happy the team is where we are right now. But yeah, it’s a little hard if you’re not playing and still waiting for your chance," Dano said following practice, where he was asked to play as a defencemen to fill in for Tyler Myers, who was missing for maintenance. -
