  • Plenty to Ponder Ahead of Deadline Cheveldayoff Has Options Before Trade Window Closes on Monday
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/jets-only-worry-about-the-next-game-not- trade-rumours-474509663.html Plenty to ponder ahead of deadline Cheveldayoff has options before trade window closes on Monday By: Mike McIntyre A blockbuster move? A depth piece or two? Nothing at all? Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff says all options are on the table heading into Monday’s NHL trade deadline — and plenty of intrigue surrounds what the local squad might do. The Jets resemble a Stanley Cup contender and have the prime opportunity they’ve been building toward for years. "I couldn’t tell you with a crystal ball what we’re going to be talking about Monday with respect to additions, or not, with our group," Cheveldayoff said Tuesday in a wide-ranging conversation with the Free Press. Cheveldayoff made it clear that while he’s willing to move draft picks and prospects to help his team win now, there are a few untouchables. While he wouldn’t identify them by name, one has to think young players such as Kyle Connor, Jack Roslovic and 2017 first-round pick Kristian Vesalainen might be among them. "We have assets within this organization — whether they’re picks or prospects — and there’s going to be a threshold that will be determined as to whether we will use them or not," Cheveldayoff said. "There’s some assets within our organization that I will not use. If there’s the right fit, and the right deal, then certainly I’d be willing to do that.

  • Vegas Beats Winnipeg with Stick Jets Livid Goal Wasn't Overturned After Hellebuyck Slashed in Head
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/vegas-downs-jets-3-2-to-remain-on-top-of-western- conference-472272033.html Vegas beats Winnipeg with stick Jets livid goal wasn't overturned after Hellebuyck slashed in head By: Mike McIntyre A heavyweight battle of the Western Conference’s top-two teams delivered in spades Thursday night. And while the Vegas Golden Knights skated away with a 3-2 overtime victory over the Winnipeg Jets, it was a controversial call earlier in the game — and Winnipeg’s reaction to it — that will surely reverberate all the way to the NHL’s head office. We take you back to late in second period, with the teams locked in a 1-1 tie and Vegas on the power play. Jets goaltender Connor Hellebuyck couldn’t quite squeeze a shot from the blue-line, and the puck sat loose behind him just inches from the goal-line. Vegas forward James Neal, apparently trying to cash in, took a wild swing with his stick that caught Hellebuyck flush in the head. Neal’s twig broke in half, the blade spinning towards the corner boards as the proverbial smoking gun. Only there was no penalty call on the play and no whistle. Erik Haula then pounced on the loose puck, knocking it home for the go-ahead tally. Winnipeg protested, and the two referees huddled with the linesman for a few seconds before ruling it a goal. Jets head coach Paul Maurice challenged for goaltender interference. Following a lengthy review, referee Ghislain Hebert ruled the original call stood — even though it was clear as day Neal slashed Hellebuyck in the face with great force.

  • Jets Expansion Draft Plan Coming Into Focus? Signing Dano Could Be Indicator
Winnipeg Sun http://www.winnipegsun.com/2017/06/13/jets-expansion-draft-plan-coming-into-focus Jets expansion draft plan coming into focus? Signing Dano could be indicator BY KEN WIEBE, WINNIPEG SUN There are still several moving parts and a few issues left to uncover or resolve, but the expansion plans for the Winnipeg Jets are coming into focus. While it's still unclear whether the Jets asked veteran defenceman Toby Enstrom to waive his no-movement clause before Monday's deadline, you'd have to think the conversation took place. When Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff was asked directly about the topic of no-movement clauses at his year-end address, he said all options would be explored. Officially, the Jets won't be commenting on the process until after the protected lists are revealed on Sunday morning. Based on experience, one shouldn't expect too much detail to be given, even after the expansion draft picks are made public. It's a sensitive subject and one of the biggest reasons the NHL GM's didn't want the lists to be made public. Yes, it's possible the Jets could buy out the final year of Enstrom's $5.75 million contract, but that appears to be the most unlikely result. The Jets haven't bought out a player since the franchise relocated and it's hard to imagine Enstrom would be the first, especially since they still value his services when healthy. Buying him out would be both a costly proposition and leave a void on the left side of the defence depth chart.

  • Maurice Changes Lines at Jets Practice
Winnipeg Free Press https://www.winnipegfreepress.com/sports/hockey/jets/maurice-changes-lines-at-jets-practice- 473698153.html Maurice changes lines at Jets practice By: Mike Sawatzky The Winnipeg Jets may have the NHL's best home record but there's a price to be paid for all that success. "When you're higher in the standings, and we're close to first, you're going to get teams pretty geared up to play you when they come in," said veteran Jets defenceman Ben Chiarot following practice at Bell MTS Place Saturday afternoon. "This is a tough building to play in and when you put where we are in the standings on top of that, teams are going to come out hard. If we're off one night or sleeping to start, we're going to be off on the wrong foot. "And St. Louis was pretty jacked up to play us." The Jets, mostly outplayed by the Blues in a 5-2 loss to St. Louis Friday night, will have another chance to defend home ice Sunday afternoon (2 p.m., TSN3, TSN 1290) when the New York Rangers make their lone visit of the 2017-18 season. Winnipeg was 20-4-2 at home and tied for top spot in the Central Division while the Rangers were three points out of a wild-card playoff spot in the Eastern Conference heading into Saturday's action. On Thursday, Rangers GM Jeff Gorton sent shockwaves through the league when he announced the club was entering a rebuilding phase and warned the club's fans that a sell-off of major assets was probable prior to the Feb.
