Manuscripts are listed by holding unit, collection, and manuscript number or shelfmark. Links are given for more than well over 2,000 digital images of miniatures, illustrations, and selected diagrams and decoration in the manuscripts, about a third of which are illuminated. In addition, links are provided for digitized grayscale microfilm of a large number of Middle English manuscripts at Princeton and for a group of important manuscripts digitized in the Library since the 1990s. Catiline in Fiesole and Florence: The After-life of a Roman Conspirator PATRICIA J. OSMOND The story of Catiline, the Roman noble who plotted to overthrow the Roman Republic in 63 B.C., occupies a significant place in Florentine historiography and political thought of the later Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Starting with the Chronica de origine civitatis (ca. 1228), this article traces the sources of the medieval account back to the ancient epitomes and investigates its relation to Sallust's Bellum Catilinae. It then describes the two branches or traditions of the story that developed in the course of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries: (1) the classical or civic, which centered on the figure of Catiline-the- villain, rebel and enemy of Rome (and of Rome's daughter-city Florence) and (2) the feudal or chivalric, which recounted the legendary adventures of Catiline-the-knight, pro- tector of Fiesole, the rival of Florence. In the final sections of the article, attention focuses on the success of the classical version of the story, linked to Guelf ambienti and, in turn, to the growth of a conservative republican ideology. While the celebration of Roman civic virtues, summed up in Cicero's defense of the res publica against the rebel Catiline, legiti- mated and ennobled the claims of the rising merchant and banking families, the vilifica- tion of Catiline as public enemy provided effective propaganda against new challenges from lower-class movements. Continuously present in the elaboration of Florentine "civic humanism," Sallust's story of Catiline supplies, in fact, an important connection between Guelf patriotism and the classicizing republicanism of the Quattrocento. -

Wie een adequate biografie zoekt van een historische figuur uit de oudheid, kan beter zijn toevlucht nemen tot de gebruikelijke geschiedwerken. In het voorliggende boek immers worden historische figuren niet vanuit een strikt geschiedkundig oogpunt behandeld. Ze zijn gekozen en beschreven naargelang en zoals ze op enigerlei wijze een indruk hebben nagelaten in de literatuur, het theater of de beeldende kunst van de oudheid en daarna. Een nadere toelichting is op haar plaats. Beginnen we met de begrenzingen en afgrenzingen van dit boek. Wat het tijdvak betreft behandelen we personen en gebeurtenissen uit de Griekse en Romeinse historiografie, en wel uit de periode vanaf de vroegst beschreven tijd tot het einde van de 3e eeuw n.C., wanneer het heidense Romeinse rijk plaats moet maken voor het christendom; Constantijn bijvoorbeeld heeft dus geen plaats meer gekregen. De volgende scheidslijn betreft die tussen mythe en geschiedenis. De beschreven voorvallen hebben steeds betrekking op personen die in de Griekse en Romeinse geschiedschrijving worden opgevoerd als historische personen en daardoor buiten het terrein van de mythologie vallen. -

Illuminating the Gallica MS Bodley 264 Bodleian Library, Oxford, xford, Bodleian Library, MS Bodley 264 is one of the most famous and most sumptuous illuminated manuscripts of the Oentire middle ages. Completed in 1344 in Tournai, in what is now Belgium, the manuscript preserves the fullest version of the interpolated Old French Roman Roman d’Alexandre Roman d’Alexandre (Romance of Alexander the Great), and some of the most vivid illustrations of any medieval romance, ranking amongst the greatest achievements of the illuminator’s art, its borders in particular offering a panorama of medieval society and imagination. A celebration of courtliness, a commemoration of urban chivalry, a mirror for the prince instructing in the arts of rule, and a meditation on crusade, it manifests the extraordinary richness and creativity of late medieval manuscript culture. This study examines the manuscript as a monumental expression of the beliefs and social practices of its day, placing it in its historical and artistic context; it also analyzes its later reception in England, where the addition of a Middle English Alexander poem and of Marco Polo’s Voyages reflects changing concepts of language, historiography, and geography. The Nine Worthies and Medieval Masculinities SOPHUS BUGGE ANNUAL LECTURE 2019 RUTH MAZO KARRAS The historical study of masculinities, as with many areas of gender studies and indeed many other fields of history, must navigate between the Scylla of essen- tialism and the Charybdis of incommensurability. 1 To operate with one defini- tion of masculinity and measure all past societies by it imposes presentist and Eurocentric views on the range of temporal and global variation. On the other hand, to deny the applicability of all modern terminology to past societies that did not share the same vocabulary and outlook, and rely only on the internal categories and concepts of each culture to explain it, we are unable to compare, to identify difference and change, to theorize in any way. I try to chart a middle course, suggesting that a binary between the masculine and the feminine is a cultural universal, or nearly.2 Each culture constructs differently what constitutes masculinity and femininity. We do need to avoid another binary in the study of masculinity, however: between a very broad reading of the evidence (anything that men do is masculine activity) and a very narrow one (only that which a con- temporary source labels manly can be understood that way). If men were ad- mired for a behavior and women were criticized for it or excluded from it, it is masculine even if contemporaries do not specifically say so. Characteristics con- nected with exemplary men can also be considered as important masculine traits even if they would also be admirable traits for women.
