Middle Atlantic Review of Latin American Studies, 2020 Vol. 4, No. 2, 56-86 “Meh Just Realize I’s Ah Coolie Bai”: Indo-Caribbean Masculinities, Chutney Genealogies, and Qoolie Subjectivities Ryan Persadie Women and Gender Studies Institute University of Toronto [email protected] In the Anglophone Caribbean, nationalist discourses of sexual citizenship are inextricably linked to the afterlife of colonialism and its far-reaching and affective legacies, resonances, and continuities as it reinscribes alterity on the bodies of sexual and gendered “others.” Focusing our optics on the Indo-Caribbean, I explore how archives of chutney music offer disruptive methods, strategies, and praxes of transgression that trouble discourses of “normative” Creole (Afro-Caribbean) and heteronormative nationalisms as “authentic” ideologies of Indo- Caribbean gendering—notably, masculinity. Drawing upon historical genealogies of sexual- sacred erotics found within the Hindu, women-exclusive, pre-wedding Indo-Caribbean tradition of matikor, I interrogate how men artists in chutney music spaces perform what I conceptualize as “qoolie subjectivities,” or distinct embodied languages of self that operate through what I argue are long-standing entanglements of Indo-Caribbeanness and queerness that, when excavated via the body, cultivate critical forms of Indo-Caribbean knowing and living. In this essay, I specifically focus on acts of remaking the pejorative term “coolie” from a grammar of harm to one of reclamation, and agentive potential. Such performances choreograph embodiments of erotic self-making, or “qoolieness,” as methods of pursuing transgressive Indo-Caribbean means of doing nonnormative gender and sexuality, offering us important vocalities that speak through genealogies of (post)indentureship chutney feminisms. -

Report Indo-Caribbean Literature and Culture University of Warwick 26th-27th June 2008 By Letizia Gramaglia The conference was organized to commemorate the 170th anniversary of the arrival of East Indians in the Caribbean and had the aim of stimulating intellectual dialogue on Indo-Caribbean literature and culture. It was an international conference which brought together academics and scholars from Belgium, America, Italy, Cyprus, Trinidad and Guyana, all working within the field of postcolonial studies and sharing a particular interest in the rapidly expanding area of Indo- Caribbean studies. The papers, presented over two days, explored the literatures of the English and French-speaking Caribbean and encouraged the debate on several aspects of social cultural and political dynamics in the region, as well as on theoretical frameworks for new and comparative approaches to Indo-Caribbean literature. Given the recent passing of Guyanese writer Roy Heath it was thought appropriate to dedicate the conference to his memory and his son Roy Heath Jr was invited to open the conference with a brief speech. A Cheddi Jagan Memorial Lecture was then given by Dr Michael Mitchell, who examined the complexities inherent to the construction of post-colonial identities in the divided and multiethnic context of Guyanese society and the reflections of these processes in literature. The first panel highlighted the importance of preserving sources on the history of Indentureship and offered the readings of two recently rediscovered journals of inestimable historical value. Brigid Wells presented a critical analysis of the diary of her ancestor Dr. Theophilus Richmond, a ship’s surgeon aboard the first vessel to transport East Indian workers from Calcutta to Demerara. -

For further information contact the UOW Library: [email protected] Gendered Voyages into Coolitude: the Shaping of the Indo-Caribbean Woman's Literary Consciousness Abstract The arrival of some 551,000 Indians who, to use Mahadai Das's phrase, 'came in ships like cattle', to the Caribbean, constitutes an indisputable event in the historical and cultural development of the Caribbean region where East Indians nowadays make up more than half of the population in Trinidad and Guyana. This voyage played a crucial role in the collision between worlds and the encounter between what were mostly migrating cultures, all of them leaving behind the original! 'authentic'2 forms of the mother- country. From 1838 onwards, as the English needed more labour to keep their trade going and reassert their authority, Indian men and women were seduced, persuaded or bluntly stolen from their motherland to become slaves under another name: indentured labourers. As they were 'driven by desperate poverty in India to sell their souls for five years and risk all for a chance of a better life? they embarked upon ships that were forever to take them to a distant part of the Empire. -

Improprieties: Feminism, Queerness, and Caribbean Literature Vera M. Kutzinski My essay is, on the one hand, a cautionary tale about the limita- tions and exclusionary practices of postcolonial feminisms and, on the other, an account of the possibilities that can emerge from contact between such feminisms and queer theory. I begin my tale with a poem by the Guyanese writer Grace Nichols, from her 1989 collection Lazy Thoughts of a Lazy Woman. The poem’s title, “Of Course When They Ask for Poems About the ‘Realities’ of Black Women,” functions as the first clause of its first sentence: What they really want at times is a specimen whose heart is in the dust A mother-of-sufferer trampled, oppressed they want a little black blood undressed and validation for the abused stereotype already in their heads Or else they want a perfect song ... Still, there ain’t no easy-belly category for a black woman or a white woman or a green woman... -

UNSILENCING HI(STORIES) OF INDO-CARIBBEAN WOMEN: RE-WRITING AND RE-PRESENTING SELF AND COMMUNITY PRABHA JERRYBANDAN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO March 2015 ©Prabha Jerrybandan, 2015 ii Abstract This study unearths and explores stories of six Indo-Caribbean women (including myself) who live in Canada. We remembered, wrote, shared, and discussed in the context of a group writing practice. We met eleven times over a period of three months in 2012. In addition, I collected family stories from my mother, her sister—my aunt, and my father’s brother—my uncle, as I sought to fill in huge spaces of not knowing with understandings. While there is no doubt that I have learnt a great deal about the lives of people in the Caribbean, and while there is still much that I may never know, this project has shown me that when I ask, there is a chance to know. Caribbean politics and culture have historically been a source of alienation for all of us, and yet we have a growing sense of belonging to the region. Our discussions spanned formal and traditional education, immigration, negotiations of race relations, gendered roles and stipulations of class and caste. My analysis uncovered and formed new understandings about the lives of women in the study and Indo-Caribbean women more generally. I situate this study within a theoretical framework of colonial and postcolonial theory and history that integrates constructs of identity and memory; of Caribbean feminist discourse; and dominant traditional, cultural and political systems. -

Its nine institutes offer an extensive programme of seminars, workshops, lectures and conferences. Senate House Library is the central library of the University of London. Drawing from an extensive body of Caribbean literature and history in the major language areas of the region (Spanish, English, and French), it describes how forests in the early colonial days represented spaces of fear. It also considers how the forest and rural spaces in general have been recuperated as sites of refuge for the escaped slave and places of folk authenticity in nationalist movements. The chapter cites works, including the travel narratives of Sir Walter Raleigh and Bartolomé de Las Casas and the environmental activism of Puerto Rican poet Juan Antonio Corretjer, to discuss the ways in which forests and spaces outside the plantation complex symbolize the cultural continuities of diasporic and indigenous populations in the Caribbean.
