We remembered, wrote, shared, and discussed in the context of a group writing practice. We met eleven times over a period of three months in 2012. In addition, I collected family stories from my mother, her sister—my aunt, and my father’s brother—my uncle, as I sought to fill in huge spaces of not knowing with understandings. While there is no doubt that I have learnt a great deal about the lives of people in the Caribbean, and while there is still much that I may never know, this project has shown me that when I ask, there is a chance to know. Caribbean politics and culture have historically been a source of alienation for all of us, and yet we have a growing sense of belonging to the region. Our discussions spanned formal and traditional education, immigration, negotiations of race relations, gendered roles and stipulations of class and caste. My analysis uncovered and formed new understandings about the lives of women in the study and Indo-Caribbean women more generally. I situate this study within a theoretical framework of colonial and postcolonial theory and history that integrates constructs of identity and memory; of Caribbean feminist discourse; and dominant traditional, cultural and political systems. The stories, combined with interviews, are a gateway into histories that have been silenced. Silences, questions and gaps in this work are as important as the stories that were told. In this dissertation, I have discussed alienation and hardship as core aspects of experience for Indo-Caribbean women. In citing the scarcity of their published work, I ask, can mental abandonment of one’s environment be thought of as a form of silencing iii that is characteristic of formerly subjugated people? I consider the possibility of silence when there is nothing to applaud, and the silences of women as a form of resistance. As a work of remembrance and creative narration, this dissertation contributes to the growing body of literature and theoretical discourse of Indo-Caribbean women. iv Acknowledgements This study would not have been possible without the support of many people including my family, my friends, participants, and my supervisor and committee members.     ASHISH RAJADHYAKSHA Reconstructing The Indian Filmography Sitara Devi and the Indian filmographer A n apocryphal story has V.A.K. Ranga Rao, the irascible collector of music and authority on South Indian cinema, offering an open challenge. It seems he saw Mother India on his television one night and was taken aback to see Sitara Devi’s name in the acting credits. The open challenge was to anyone who could spot Sitara Devi anywhere in the film. And, he asked, if she was not in the film, to answer two questions. First, what happened? Was something filmed with her and cut out? If so, when was this cut out? Almost more important: what to do with Sitara Devi’s filmography? Should Mother India feature in that or not? Such a problem would cut deep among what I want to call the classic years of the Indian filmographers. The Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema decided to include Sitara Devi’s name in its credits, mainly because its own key source for Hindi credits before 1970 was Firoze Rangoonwala’s iconic Indian Filmography, Silent and Hindi Film: 1897-1969, published in 1970 and Har Mandir Singh ‘Hamraaz’s somewhat different, equally legendary Hindi Film Geet Kosh which came out with the first edition of its 1951-60 listings in 1980. The Singh Geet Kosh tradition would provide bulwark support both on JOURNAL OF THE MOVING IMAGE 13 its own but also through a series of other Geet Koshes by Harish Raghuvanshi on Gujarati, Murladhar Soni on Rajasthani and many others. Like Ranga Rao, Singh and the other Geet Kosh editors have had his own variations of the Sitara Devi problem: his focus was on songs, and he was coming across major discrepancies between film titles, their publicity material and record listings.

Toussaint In this paper the Spanish Main is taken to refer to the broad area stretching from Mexico to the southern tip of South America, only part of which was affected by East Indian immigration1. Until recently, little research was done regarding migration from the Caribbean to South America. A largely unexplored dimension of this phenomenon is the late nineteenth-century illegal migration of a number of Indian immigrant labourers who had been brought to the Caribbean under indenture contracts. This paper seeks to bring this migration phenomenon into focus. It examines the circumstances surrounding the illegal emigration of these Indians to the South American mainland, their experience there and the British government’s handling of this problem. Also discussed is the cultural impact of those Indian immigrants who remained on the mainland. The overall number of Indian emigrants is unknown and undoubtedly small. Ours, however, is a qualitative rather than quantitative discourse, intended to broaden the context and scope of Indian migration, and our appreciation of the myriad dimensions of their diaspora. Theoretical and Epistemological Issues There are two fundamental and reciprocating nuances to Caribbean migration historiography. Firstly, it emphasizes the movement of labour, whether forced or voluntary. Secondly, from this, historical enquiry remains focused on in-migration to the region. Out-migration, significant as part of the Caribbean experience from the inception of European and Caribbean contact, has been studied as an afterthought. One result is that the complexity of Caribbean migration has been significantly obscured2.

An ethnographic case study, it spans across four years. The setting is a microcosm of India’s own complex multilingualism. The focal children speak Bengali or Bihari as a first language; Hindi as a second language; attend an English-medium village school; and participate daily in Sanskrit prayers. Within this context, I show how the institutional discursive framing of English as a prerequisite for socio- economic mobility, helps produce, reproduce, and exacerbate inequalities within the world’s second largest educational system.

Many people are under the impression that this prayer is only performed when one is about to die. This is a great misunderstanding. This prayer should be done when one is fit and in a healthy mind. When one performs this prayer when one is fit and healthy then its efficacy is increased 1000 fold, if a sick man makes the gift its efficacy is only a 100 fold. If his son gifts something on behalf of the dead, the gift is indirect and its efficacy is rendered as normal. (Garuda Purana Preta Kand Chapter 47 verses 37-38) What should be given in the Go-Daan puja? Sesame seed, iron, gold, cotton, salt, seven types of grains, earth and a cow. The dying person should give these 8 precious gifts to a brahmana. The wise have prescribed the gift of salt to be given freely and it opens the doorway to the other world. (Garuda Purana Preta Khanda chapter 4 verses 7-8,14) Why do Hindus perform cremation? In Hinduism, cremation is prescribed by our shastras and it is preferred means of disposal of the corpse. The others being disposing the body via water or burial.     Calabash A JOURNAL OF CARIBBEAN ARTS AND LETTERS Vol 4, Num 1 / Spring-Summer 2006 Dr. Kumar Mahabir EAST INDIANS/SOUTH ASIANS IN THE CARIBBEAN ●●● The abolition of slavery in the early 1830s in the British, French and Dutch colonies of the West Indies/Caribbean led to a severe shortage of labor in the sugarcane plantations. The ex-slaves had exercised their right of freedom of choice to discontinue working on the sugarcane estates even for a wage. The subsequent shortage of labor served as a catalyst for the introduction of a system of imported contract labor. The British first introduced laborers from India to the Caribbean through a system of semi- slave contract labor known as Indentureship. In 1838, Britain brought the first Indian laborers from the port of Calcutta to British Guiana (now Guyana) based on the success of the system in Mauritius. Initially, the Caribbean initiative met resistance since accusations were leveled at the harsh treatment of the newly-arrived workers. Nevertheless, with lobbying by John Gladstone and other British planters, the system continued and expanded. It was later extended to Trinidad and Jamaica [1845] and then to other Caribbean islands like St. Lucia [1856], St. Vincent [1856], Grenada [1857] and St. Kitts [1861]. The system was also adopted by the French and Dutch who took Indians to Martinique [1853], Guadeloupe [1854], French Guyana [1855], St. Croix [1862] and Suriname [1873]. By the time Indentureship system ended in 1917, about 400,000 Indians came to the Caribbean colonies, most of whom chose to settle in the islands.
