Research Monograph Introduction to Dominican Blackness Silvio Torres-Saillant 1 Dominican Studies Research Monograph Series About the Dominican Studies Research Monograph Series The Dominican Research Monograph Series, a publication of the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute, documents scholarly research on the Dominican experience in the United States, the Dominican Republic, and other parts of the world. For the most part, the texts published in the series are the result of research projects sponsored by the CUNY Dominican Studies Institute. About CUNY Dominican Studies Institute Founded in 1992 and housed at The City College of New York, the Dominican Studies Institute of the City University of New York (CUNY DSI) is the nation’s first, university-based research institute devoted to the study of people of Dominican descent in the United States and other parts of the world. CUNY DSI’s mission is to produce and disseminate research and scholarship about Dominicans, and about the Dominican Republic itself. The Institute houses the Dominican Archives and the Dominican Library, the first and only institutions in the United States collecting primary and secondary source material about Dominicans. CUNY DSI is the locus for a community of scholars, including doctoral fellows, in the field of Dominican Studies, and sponsors multidisciplinary research projects. [email protected] Abstract The African Methodist Episcopal (ame) Church, a black Church founded in the United States in 1816, was first established in eastern Haiti when over 6,000 black freemen emigrated from the United States to Hispaniola between 1824 and 1825. Almost a cen- tury later, the ame Church grew rapidly in the Dominican Republic as West Indians migrated to the Dominican southeast to work on sugar plantations. This article exam- ines the links between African-American immigrant descendants, West Indians, and u.s.-based ame leaders between the years 1899–1916. In focusing on Afro-diasporic exchange in the Church and the hardships missionary leaders faced on the island, the article reveals the unequal power relations in the ame Church, demonstrates the signif- icance of the southeast to Dominican ame history, and brings the Dominican Republic into larger discussions of Afro-diasporic exchange in the circum-Caribbean. Gagá Pa’l Pueblo: A Critical Afro Dominican Celebration in New York City by Daly Guilamo [email protected] The Borough of Manhattan Community College Center for Ethnic Studies New York, NY Abstract Gagá Pa’l Pueblo (GPP) is an Afro Dominican group that hosts a recurring summer religious musical event that takes place every Sunday afternoon at Manhattan’s Anne Loftus Playground in Washington Heights, a haven for Dominican immigrants in the U.S. The summer event consists of performing gagá music and hosting weekly ceremonies in honor of a Dominican Vudú loa or deity. Through the use of direct observation and interviews of specific members of GPP, this paper explores the reasons for which the participants infuse racial themes that center on praising blackness and African heritage into their musical religious sessions. Ultimately, I argue that Gaga Pa’l Pueblo is a radical celebration of Dominican blackness, evidenced through the primary participants/interviewees’ discourse on race, nation, and identity that departs from and ruptures traditional definitions of Dominicanness. PURGING THE PAST: PALMA SOLA, TRUJILLO, AND THE SALVATION OF THE DOMINICAN NATION by KATHRINE ERIN MOONEY B.A., Simon Fraser University, 2005 A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (History) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) April 2010 © Kathrine Erin Mooney, 2010 Abstract This essay examines the rise of Palma Sola, a religious community in the south-west region of the Dominican Republic, in the wake of the assassination of the long-reigning dictator, Rafael Leónidas Trujillo. The focus of the thesis is on the divergent narratives produced within the community at Palma Sola and those produced by actors in the capital, leading up to an armed intervention by state forces at the end of December 1962. A central argument is made that, despite very different viewpoints on the significance and function of Palma Sola, both narratives evince a concern with reorganizing the meaning of the dictatorial past, and a desire to chart a path toward a more auspicious future. Throughout, this paper suggests that practice must be examined alongside discourses and symbols in historical explorations of culture. Further, it argues that relying on oversimplified definitions of “religion” and the “nation” can be misleading, for it disallows an analysis that can locate the conjoined roots of these divergent narratives. ii Table of Contents Abstract............................................................................................................... ii
