Pulp Fiction © Jami Bernard The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films, 2002 When Quentin Tarantino traveled for the first time to Amsterdam and Paris, flush with the critical success of “Reservoir Dogs” and still piecing together the quilt of “Pulp Fiction,” he was tickled by the absence of any Quarter Pounders with Cheese on the European culinary scene, a casualty of the metric system. ENTRECULTURAS Número 6. ISSN: 1989-5097. Fecha de publicación: 29-01-2014 TRADUCCIÓN Y DOBLAJE: ANÁLISIS DE FUCK Y SU TRADUCCIÓN AL ESPAÑOL EN JACKIE BROWN Betlem Soler Pardo Universitat de València ABSTRACT Four-letter words are the most obscene and vulgar words in the English language; these refer to parts of the body, bodily functions, human waste, and sex, to cite a few examples. Of all these categories, the one which involves sex is the most obscene of all, and among this group, the most vulgar is fuck (Montagu, 1967; Allan and Burridge, 2006). This paper aims, firstly, to examine a paradigmatic sample of the f-word as it appears in Jackie Brown, a neo noir film directed by Quentin Tarantino; secondly, to carry out research on the categorization of fuck based on the work of McEnery and Xiao (2004); thirdly, to analyse the translation for dubbing of this controversial word into Spanish; and finally, to establish if the presence of fuck in the Spanish version of Jackie Brown has decreased or increased after having carried out the transfer of words.

  • Pulp Fiction (Us 1994)
1 UPDATED PREVIOUS CASE STUDY FOR POSTMODERNISM CHAPTER: PULP FICTION (US 1994) Many have called Pulp Fiction (US 1994) a typically postmodern product, so it seems worth testing it against some of the features argued to characterise postmodernism. • In what sense can it be called postmodern? • Which of its characteristics might this term describe? • Through what other theoretical approaches can it be discussed ? Applying ‘postmodern’ textual criteria to ‘Pulp Fiction’ Intertextuality is evidently in play. The film makes references to gangster, boxing, war, musical, blaxploitation, romance and even arthouse genres (in its homage to the French [modernist] director Jean-Luc Godard). Echoes of Godard a) The name of the production company for the film, ‘A Band Apart’, is (almost) the French title of a film (Bande A Part (France 1964) by Godard (who is reported to have said of the tribute ‘Why doesn’t he just give me the money?’) b) Vincent and Mia’s dance in Jack Rabbit Slim’s is a homage to a similar scene in the Godard film c) Mia/Thurman’s hairstyle and ‘look’ deliberately echoes that of Anna Karina, an actress closely associated with Godard’s life and work, who in turn was echoing the silent star Louise Brooks. The references include possible ones across to other Tarantino films (is Vince the cousin or brother to Vic, ‘Mr Blonde’ Vega in Reservoir Dogs? Or related to Suzanne Vega, the singer, as he says at one point?). They include the stars’ other performances: Harvey Keitel as ‘cleaner-up of murders’ in Abel Ferrara’s The Assassin; Travolta possibly acting here the future of Tony Manero, the dancer from Saturday Night Fever…...the potential references are almost infinite, and certainly partly intended by Tarantino.

THE SOUTH ACCORDING TO QUENTIN TARANTINO A Thesis presented in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Department of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture The University of Mississippi by MICHAEL LEE HENLEY August 2015 Copyright Michael Lee Henley 2015 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This thesis explores the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of the South and southerners in his films Pulp Fiction (1994), Death Proof (2007), and Django Unchained (2012). In order to do so, it explores and explains Tarantino’s mixture of genres, influences, and filmmaking styles in which he places the South and its inhabitants into current trends in southern studies which aim to examine the South as a place that is defined by cultural reproductions, lacking authenticity, and cultural distinctiveness. Like Godard before him, Tarantino’s movies are commentaries on film history itself. In short, Tarantino’s films actively reimagine the South and southerners in a way that is not nostalgic for a “southern way of life,” nor meant to exploit lower class whites.

Revista de Traducció 27, 2020 125-141 Profanity and blasphemy in the subtitling of English into European Spanish: four case studies based on a selection of Tarantino’s films José Javier Ávila-Cabrera Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Departamento de Estudios Ingleses: Lingüística y Literatura 28040 Madrid [email protected] ORCID: 0000-0001-5338-3584 Abstract The combination of profanity and blasphemy can be said to be one of the most delicate taboo categories to deal with on the screen. It is in the context of audiovisual translation (AVT) where professionals have to make challenging decisions when transferring these elements. Thus, should audiovisual translators be faithful to the source text or is it legitimate that they tone down the load of profanity and blasphemy? This paper describes the subtitling into European Spanish of a corpus composed of some of Tarantino’s films on the grounds of profane and blas- phemous phrases which could provoke a strong reaction from the audience. Among the main goals of this paper are: scrutinising (1) if the religious phrases under analysis are transferred faithfully; and (2) whether or not cases of blasphemy in the target text have been encountered. In a nutshell, this study aims to explore the treatment of profanity and blasphemy in the subti- tles produced for the Spanish audience. Keywords: blasphemy and profanity; interlingual subtitling; Descriptive Translation Studies; faithfulness; self-censorship Resum.
