Over the course of the past 60 years, the dark stain that is the Lavender Scare has been a subtly recurring theme in popular culture, and in light of the still prevalent, highly problematic attitudes towards transgender and homosexual rights today, it's both reassuring and saddening to know that the cultural blight it provides is still being addressed. Today, the event is examined across several mediums, including a documentary, an opera, and a new art exhibition. Tom of Finland: Love and Liberation 6 March – 28 June 2020 The UK’s first public exhibition dedicated solely to gay cultural icon Tom of Finland. A timely celebration, showing previously unseen works on the centenary of his birth. “My aim is not to create an ideal but to draw beautiful men who love each other and are proud of it.” On 6 March 2020, House of Illustration will open the UK’s first public solo show dedicated to gay cultural icon and prolific artist Tom of Finland (born Touko Laaksonen), in partnership with Tom of Finland Foundation and the Finnish Institute in London. This timely exhibition, will celebrate the artist whose homoerotic visions had a profound effect on gay communities in Europe and North America during a pivotal period in their history and continue to have an immeasurable influence on popular culture today. Tom of Finland: Love and Liberation will display 40 works on paper produced from the 1960s to the 1980s, both before and after homosexuality was decriminalised in much of Europe and the U.S. It will include early drawings of men fighting that constituted the only legal way to show physical contact between men before decriminalisation, as well as illustrations from his iconic Kake comics and rare linocuts produced in very limited editions. Many of these works, on loan from the Los Angeles-based Tom of Finland Foundation, will be exhibited to the public for the first time. Johnson, University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2004, ISBN 0-2264-0190-1 d13.00 (Pbk) 312p; ISBN 0-2264-0481-1 d21.00 (Hbk) 280p Like all civil service employees working during the Eisenhower administration, Madeleine Tress – a 24-year-old business economist at the Department of Commerce in Washington, DC – was required to pass a security investigation as a condition for employment. At her position for only a few months, on that April day in 1958, Madeline was led into a room by two male interrogators who began the ‘interview’ by asking her a few mundane questions regarding her name, where she lived, and her date of birth. ‘Miss Tress’, one of the interrogators then retorted, ‘the Commission has information that you are an admitted homosexual. What comment do you wish to make regarding this matter?’ (quoted in Johnson, 2004: 148). Shocked, Madeleine froze and refused to answer the question. The men disclosed that they had reliable information that she had been seen frequenting a gay bar, the Redskins Lounge, and they named a number of her lesbian and gay male friends. One of the men then sneered, ‘How do you like having sex with women? You’ve never had it good until you’ve had it from a man.’ Tormented into silence, following the interrogation, she refused to sign a document admitting her alleged ‘crime’. The next day, Madeleine Tress handed in her official resignation. By the late 1950s, literally thousands of women and men working in Washington, DC experienced similar inquisitorial grillings conducted under the guise of ‘national security’. -

According to the 2007 World Democracy Audit, Finland is the freest nation in the world in terms of civil liberties, freedom of the press, and basic political and human rights. Like other Nordic countries, Finland is liberal in regards to gay rights, though it has been slower than its neighbors to assure glbtq equality. Finnish gay men and lesbians now have the same legal status as heterosexuals, with the exception of adoption rights. Languages and History The first language of most Finns is Finnish, one of the few official languages of the European Union that is not of Indo-European origin. -

Yung 1 Brooke Yung Dr. Turek US Society and Politics [HIST 2440] May 10 2019 Red-Lavender Colorblindness: Institutionalized Oppression and Gay Life in America On December 15, 1950, a Senate Investigations Subcommittee printed their interim report on an unprecedented and vaguely salacious task: “to determine the extent of the employment of homosexuals and other sex perverts in Government.”1 Tentatively navigating the web of legal, moral, and medical approaches to conceptualizing homosexuality, this subcommittee sought to identify and terminate employees indulging in same-sex relations. Not only did this document verify the government’s belief in the undesirability of homosexuality—depicting it as a “problem” in need of “dealing with”—it captured the prevailing association of homosexuality with subversive activity, a mentality signature to the 1950s.2 In discussing the challenge of accurately recognizing homosexuals, the subcommittee evidenced a particular wariness of those who appeared heterosexual.
