N osce Te Ipsum Weekly Bulletin Week Commencing 31st October 2016 Headteacher’s News I do hope you have all enjoyed a lovely half term break. We had a lovely end of half term Harvest Festival assembly led by some of our senior students; Amelie Tadd (Charity Rep), Nina Kreel (Head of School Council), Louie Glanvill (Head Boy) and Olivia Pavlides (Head Girl). Thank you so much for your very kind donations, you were all so generous and we were able to donate a large variety of food to the Hangleton and West Blatchington Food Bank. Amelie Tadd met with 2 representatives from the Food Bank to hand over our donations. We have since had some correspondence from them thanking us for our contributions: “A huge thank you from the volunteers of the Hangleton & West Blatchington Foodbank for the generous donations made by pupils and parents of Deepdene School. We support an average of 35 people a week (14 of those children) and your contributions will really help those people in our local community who are struggling to provide food for themselves and their families. For more information about what we do visit www.hangletonfoodbank.org” Zoe Smith Co-ordinator Hangleton & West Blatchington Foodbank Mrs James has been busy preparing our very own Internet Safety day which will allow pupils to participate in activities related to ‘Keeping Safe on Line’. The assembly on Monday is relating to this very important topic, so please do discus with your child what they have been doing throughout the day and what they have learnt. Mrs James will also be launching a competition on Monday and we invite pupils across all year groups to participate! More details to come soon… Elizabeth Brown Headteacher Reception News A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT REMINDERS! The children in Reception have been looking at the art work of ‘Giuseppe Archimboldo’. We were fascinated by his portraits of Christmas Card Orders people made from fruit and vegetables, with his inspiration we The deadline for parents to order their children’s Christmas created our very own portraits out of fruit and vegetables. Cards is 9th November 2016- this will guarantee delivery of the cards to parents in the first week of December. The children in Reception have had an amazing first half term. We have learnt all about Fruit and Vegetables, celebrated Roald Dahl’s Birthday, been on our first school trip, attended school Canvas Bag Orders assemblies and House meetings and much more! All money and order forms are to be returned to Ms Taylor We were really excited to share our work with our parents on by Monday 7th November. These bags will make lovely open morning. Christmas gifts for friends and family. After half term we will be looking at the changing seasons and focussing on Autumn, Diwali and Bonfire Night, so if you are on any walks please look out for natural things to bring in to put on Open House our Autumn table. Our next ‘Open House- come and see your child’s work’ will be in the Spring term. You are of course always welcome to come and see what your child has been up to, you may arrange this with your child’s class teacher who will be happy to suggest a convenient time for you to come into the classroom. Year 1 News In science during the last week of half term, we were focusing on another one of our senses. The children sampled a variety of foods and discussed whether the tastes were sweet, salty or sour. There was no surprise when mango and marshmallow turned out to be the favourites! We enjoyed a lesson on rhyming words supported by the story This is the Tale of Georgie Grub. I wonder if the children have mentioned to you about the ending? Our PSHE lesson concentrated on emotions and how we can recognise what our friends are feeling. The children expressed very mature thoughts and were able to relate the emotions shown to their own experiences. For this half term, our History topic is ‘Toys’ we shall be sending home a questionnaire which we would kindly invite you to complete which will be asking you about some of the toys you had as a child. We hope you have had a lovely holiday. Mrs Moore and Mrs Kent Year 2 News The children in Year Two have been working incredibly hard in Science, learning about Uranus and Neptune. They have attended ‘Space School’ and have been learning facts and making collages of the planets for our solar system pictures. In computing the children have been practising their skills using Office (Word) and have typed up captions about themselves that have been stuck with their self portrait paintings in the classroom. Year 3 Stone Age Day We have been continuing to learn about the history of Brighton and have been discussing the differences in clothing that Prince Regent What a fantastic day we have had. Year 3 enjoyed an exciting week of History with Miss Hayward during the last week of the half term. They had a workshop with the Archaeological society on Monday afternoon and a day of Stone Age activities on the Wednesday. Year 4 Year 6 News Year 4 had a great time at Brighton Museum where they took part Huge congratulations to our Year 6 pupils who have stepped up in an Ancient Egyptian workshop.
