COMMITTEE OF THE WHOLE

For meeting to be held on: Submitted by: For: November 12, 2014 Aileen Murray, Ec.D. (F) Information Manager of Economic Development Subject: NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS

BACKGROUND:

County Council approved the 2014- 2019 Economic Development Strategy in April 2014. The recommendations contained a variety of marketing activities to support the County's business attraction, retention and expansion efforts. The strategy recommended finding new and interesting ways to share business success stories and community data. It also included making enhancements to the Invest in Middlesex website and available properties tool.

ANALYSIS:

The Community Profile is a foundational document for economic development offices. It provides an overview of Middlesex County including maps, demographics, labour force data, transportation, infrastructure and education for prospective investors, existing businesses planning expansions and key influencers. The 2014 Community Profile includes the most recent data from a variety of sources and encourages readers to access additional information on the Invest in Middlesex website.

The profile is available in print and digitally as a pdf and flipbook. The pdf and print documents were designed to meet accessibility guidelines.

The Lure Brochure highlights the key benefits of investing in the community and features successful Middlesex businesses chosen to show the diversity of business across the County.

Videos The business park marketing has been expanded with the addition of aerial videos of all eight business parks in the County. The aerial videos provide viewers with additional context by showing neighbouring businesses, roadways and other features of the sites. The videos are posted on the Invest in Middlesex YouTube channel and incorporated into the Invest in Middlesex website. Links to the videos are included in the available properties database. …/2 NOVEMBER 12, 2014 Page 2 of 30 11. C.12 - CW INFO

SUBJECT: NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS

The videos have been provided to the local municipalities for their promotional efforts and where applicable, shared with the realtor. Links to the videos will be incorporated into packages prepared in response to future requests for information. Each business park listing now includes still aerial photographs shot in conjunction with the videos.

Four new Middlesex success story will be added to the YouTube channel this fall featuring Ricco Foods, Strathroy Brewing Company, CTAR and Apple Land. The success story videos are also included on the Invest in Middlesex website. The videos are included in our information packages and are shown during meetings with prospective investors and community presentations. The videos have been shared with the businesses for their promotional efforts. The local municipalities have also incorporated them in their economic development promotions. Featured companies are selected in consultation with the local municipalities

Sales in Ontario are subject to the Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) which combines Ontario and Canadian sales tax. Although the consumer pays the tax, businesses are generally responsible for collecting and remitting the tax to the government. Business registrants collect the HST on most of their sales and pay HST on most purchases. They can claim an input tax credit to recover the HST paid on purchases they use in their commercial activities. Income Tax Rates 2014 Corporate Income Tax Rates
