Week 16 Gay Nationals Bonspiel News Taylor's Tips Vol. 33, No. 16 RCL Member News Sunday, February 14, 2016 WEEK 16 Welcome to another issue of the RCL news, devoted to all things curling, real and imagined. Team Howard beat John Epping’s team in last week’s Ontario final. On the up side, rumour has it that Epping will be entering a team in the Riverdale Bonspiel! So get out your autograph books and iphones. GAY NATIONALS Riverdale is representn’ at the Gay Nationals, taking place this weekend in balmy Winnipeg. The Montreal league is trying to find a new venue for next year’s bonspiel.     2021 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the 2021 Canadian Mixed Doubles Curling Championship (CMDCC) qualification process has been modified. The 2021 CMDCC will be a thirty-five (35) team event with five (5) pools of seven (7) teams competing in individual round robins. Following these five round robins, twelve (12) teams will then advance to the playoff round. The championship team will advance to the 2021 World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, at a date and place TBD. The 35 team Championship field was determined as follows: • 14 teams as selected by their respective Provincial or Territory Associations. • 14 teams from the CMDR based on points accumulated from March 15, 2019 to March 15, 2020. 1 Teams must have played in a minimum of two mixed doubles events during this time frame. Introduction Simple in concept but actually quite complex, curling is often called “chess on ice”. Like innings in baseball, curling takes place over “ends” (8 or 10). Each end comprises of 16 shots, with each shot a decision point in the contest. In a 10-end game the captain of each team, known as the “skip”, makes 80 decisions. This makes for 160 decisions between two teams. In many cases the decision is universally accepted, but very often there can be disagreement on the correct called shot and one poor choice can turn the course of the game. Because of the way curling is played, each decision can be examined using analytics. What is the chance my teammate will successfully execute this shot? What will my opponent likely do next? What are the conditions of the ice and how will that effect our chance of making this shot and each subsequent shot? Based on the outcome of my decision, what is my probability of winning the game? Given the shot-by-shot structure of curling, many would consider statistical analysis as both desired and perhaps necessary for success. This is traditionally not the case. Curling is a game steeped in tradition, where parents and grandparents pass on experience to the next generation. In many instances, some of the best teams in the world stop and consider several options (while a chess timer is ticking away) when pre-planning could help clarify the correct decision much faster.

It was agreed by the group that a promotion project on active transportation would be a good choice. The event will either be held as part of another larger event, or possibly at GSS over the lunch breaks. (potential for BT to do the same, if there are sufficient students to do so). Group discussed having a photo booth as part of the promotions, possibly using the libraries green screen if agreeable (Ben has some experience with the screen).
