The Legion has a lovely lily display in front of their building, also a raised flower bed with annuals and perennials. The bed is well maintained and plants are healthy and thriving. There is a beautiful display of red and white petunias in a pot at the entrance to the Legion. The Red Feather Farm Garden has a beautiful variety of annuals, perennials, fruit trees and shrubs. Red Feather is blessed to have June Minish as one of the keepers of the garden. The use of wood chips was visible in many places we toured. It is a great ground cover, easy to walk on and is bio-degradable. Selkirk and Area Horticultural Society volunteers do a marvelous job of looking after the Community Perennial Garden on Main Street. They have a “Monarch Waystation” and we spotted one Monarch larva munching on the Milkweed. City of Selkirk and their residents should be extremely proud of this beautiful city. The work of all the volunteers was very evident everywhere we went. Various styles are available to homeowners who want to add fi repits to their backyards, and choosing the right type may come down to budget, the amount of yard space available or even personal preference. · Wood fi repit: As their name suggests, wood fi repits burn wood, which may appeal to homeowners who already have wood-burning fi replaces inside their homes. Because they don’t require homeowners to tap into gas lines, wood fi repits are generally easy to set up and install, and many homeowners prefer the aesthetic appeal of crackling wood and fl ames that’s synonymous with wood fi repits. · Gas fi repit: Gas fi repits are touted for their convenience, as they don’t require homeowners to carry wood and build fi res. Last Friday, Interlake beat St. James 10-5. “It was very nice,” said Blue Jays’ coach Adam Kirk of the winning weekend. “St. James had some guys missing last Friday and they pitched some guys that they normally wouldn’t pitch but we still came in and played a good, solid game and got the win, which helped us secure third place.” In the sweep over the Orioles, Blue Jays’ pitchers did a great job throwing strikes and the defence played well. Interlake hit the ball pretty well, too, especially against a good Pembina Valley pitcher in Game 1. “The boys are confi dent at the plate right now,” Kirk noted. “Things are rolling.” Brandon fi nished in third place during the regular season, 1.5 games ahead of Interlake.
