PETER GEACH Peter Thomas Geach 1916–2013 PETER GEACH was born on 29 March 1916 at 41, Royal Avenue, Chelsea. He was the son of George Hender Geach, a Cambridge graduate working in the Indian Educational Service (IES), who later taught philosophy at Lahore. George Geach was married to Eleonore Sgnonina, the daughter of a Polish civil engineer who had emigrated to England. The marriage was not a happy one: after a brief period in India Eleonore returned to England to give birth and never returned to her husband. Peter Geach’s first few years were spent in the house of his Polish grandparents in Cardiff, but at the age of four his father had him made the ward of a former nanny of his own, an elderly nonconformist lady named Miss Tarr. When Peter’s mother tried to visit him, Miss Tarr warned him that a dangerous mad woman was coming, so that he cowered away from her when she tried to embrace him. As she departed she threw a brick through a window, and from that point there was no further contact between mother and son. When he was eight years old he became a boarder at Llandaff Cathedral School. Soon afterwards his father was invalided out of the IES and took charge of his education. To the surprise of his Llandaff housemaster, Peter won a scholarship to Clifton College, Bristol. Geach père had learnt moral sciences at Trinity College Cambridge from Bertrand Russell and G. E. Moore, and he inducted his son into the delights of philosophy from an early age. -

Comments on “Facts about the Slingshot” by Gregory Landini Valia Allori This paper is very technical, so I will start my comments with a reconstruction of the arguments presented. Only at the end of this I will say what I think. I apologize in advance for any misinterpretation that I might have done. If I did, it was, of course, entirely unintentional. There is an argument against the correspondence theory of truth that, because of its combined simplicity and devastation, has been named the slingshot argument. According to the correspondence theory of truth a sentence is true iff there is a fact corresponding to it. In order to make sense, it seems that this theory must be able to differentiate between facts. The slingshot arguments, if sound, establish that every true sentence corresponds to the same fact, and therefore the corresponding theory of truth is doomed to failure. In his paper, Gregory argues that the slingshot argument is unsound. Let me just recapitulate what the argument says and my understanding of Gregory's argument against it. I will talk only about Davidson’s first version, for simplicity. The comments I will make will nonetheless apply to both versions. Let [p] be a shortcut for the locution “the fact that p”. Then it seems reasonable to assume that: 1) if to sentences p and q are identical, then [p]=[q] 2) if p and q describe the same thing (are co-denoting), then [p]=[q] for example: given S= “Cicero wrote Philippicae Oratione” and R=“Tully wrote Philippicae Oratione”, then [Cicero wrote Philippicae Oratione]=[Tully wrote Philippicae Oratione] 3) if p ad q are logically equivalent sentences, then [p]=[q] for example: S'= “ Plato=x: (x=Plato & S)” is logically equivalent to S, so [S]=[S'] Assumption number 2) is what Gregory calls the assumption of “constitution”: it amounts to say that the facts containing an object do not depend on the description provided. -

SOME RADICAL CONSEQUENCES OF GEACH'S LOGICAL THEORIES By jAMES CAIN ETER Geach's views of relative identity, together with his Paccount of proper names and quantifiers, 1 while presenting what I believe is an inwardly coherent and consistent account, presents us with radical consequences regarding what arguments are to be accepted as valid. For example, consider the argument: ( 1) All men are mortal Fido is a man Thus, Fido is mortal in which 'Fido' names a dog. While this would normally be thought to be a valid argument with a false premise, we shall see that on Geach's theories it turns out to be invalid. In fact for every form of general categorical syllogism we can produce an argument of that form which on Geach's theories turns out invalid. 1 I will only be concerned with the theory of restricted quantifiers worked out in the main body of Reference and Generality, third edition {Ithaca: Cornell University Press, 1980), not with either his theory of unrestricted quantifiers or the method of interpreting restricted quantifiers mentioned in the appendix to Reference and Generality. 84 ANALYSIS Let us see how this situation arises. We first look briefly at Geach's semantics. According to Geach every proper name is associ ated with a criterion of identity which could be expressed using a substantival term; e.g., 'Fido' is, let's say, associated with the criterion of identity given by 'same dog': this can be expressed by saying that 'Fido' is a name for a dog (we may go on to say that it is a name of a dog if it is non-empty; Reference and Generality p. -

The Use-Mention Distinction
The Use-Mention Distinction The use-mention distinction is traditionally understood as the distinction between using an expression (or phrase, etc.) and mentioning it. Quoting from Wikipedia encyclopedia: In written language, mentioned words or phrases often appear between quotation marks or in italics. Used words or phrases, being more common than mentioned ones, do not have any typographic distinction. Making a statement mention itself is an interesting way of producing logical paradoxes. Violation of the use-mention distinction can produce sentences that sound and appear similar to the original, but have an entirely different meaning. For example, "The use-mention distinction" is not "strictly enforced here". is literally true because the two phrases in it are not the same. The general property of terms changing their reference depending on the context was called suppositio (substitution) by classical logicians. It describes how one has to substitute a term in a sentence based on its meaning—that is, what referent the term has. In general, a term can be used in several ways. For nouns, they are: • Properly with a real referent: “That is my cow” (assuming it exists). • Properly with a generic referent: “Any cow gives milk.” • Properly but with a non-real referent: “Ulysses’s cow was big.” • Improperly by way of metaphor: “Your sister is a cow”. • As a pure term: “Cow has only three letters”. The last use is what gives rise to the use-mention distinction. However, a lot of misunderstanding and many paradoxes arise also from confusing different ways in which a meaningful expression can be used. -

The slingshot argument, Gödel’s hesitation and Tarskian semantics ARHAT VIRDI The slingshot argument is a reductio purporting to show that if there are facts at all there is only one to which all true statements correspond. If facts are not non-trivially individuable then this presumably must render the notion of fact and, by implication, theories such as the correspondence theory of truth incoherent. -

Approved: Dr. David Deane Supervisor Dr. Susan Slater Examiner Dr. Neil Robertson Examiner Date: April 3, 2013 2 Abstract To Want Nothing: A Badiouian Reading of Radical Orthodoxy by David John DeCoste April 3, 2013 This thesis argues that Alain Badiou presents a challenge to Radically Orthodox thinkers by claiming that theological discourse on being can only articulate a description of a structured presentation of an inconsistent multiplicity; a situation referred to throughout the thesis as “a Badiouian thinking of the One.” The argument begins by explaining how in the contemporary context Badiou identifies two forms of thinking the One: positivism and theology. It follows that if positivism and theology are two forms of the same thinking then there must be common elements or logics at work in their separate discourses. Three elements shared by both discourses are shown to be at work in both a positivist project—Daniel Dennett’s philosophy of consciousness—and a theological project—Radical Orthodoxy.
