Rothwell was the inventor of the Variable Blast Pipe and a promoter of the Bolton & Leigh Railway which opened in 1838.

The original triple portrait had an unusual function. In 1636 Charles I had the painting despatched to Rome to the sculptor Bernini [1598-1680] where it was to assist in the making of a marble bust, the three viewpoints helping the sculptor to create a three-dimensional likeness.

* All lots subject to a buyers premium of 21% plus vat @ 20% 69 372 • Ernest Howard Shepherd [1879-1976] Figure Studies for George III, Gibbon and Stevens, three, each signed with initials and inscribed with title pencil drawings, each 29 x 16.5cm. [3] *£400 - 600 By 1906 Shepard had become a successful illustrator having produced work for editions of Aesop’s Fables, David Copperfield and Tom Brown’s Schooldays while at the same time working as an illustrator on the staff of Punch magazine. Shepard was also a prolific painter. He exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham, a traditional venue for generic painters, as well as in the more radical atmosphere of Glasgow’s Institute of Fine Arts. He was twice an exhibitor at the prestigious Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, and at the Manchester Art Gallery. At heart though, Shepard was a Londoner, showing sixteen times at the Royal Academy. Although in his mid-thirties when World War I broke out, Shepard received a commission into the Royal Garrison Artillery, an arm of the Royal Artillery. By the end of the war he had achieved the rank of major. Throughout the war he continued to contribute to Punch and he was hired as a regular staff cartoonist in 1921 becoming lead cartoonist in 1945. Shepard was recommended to A. A. Milne in 1923 by another Punch staffer, E. V. Lucas. Milne initially thought Shepard’s style was not what he wanted, but used him to illustrate the book of poems When We Were Very Young. Happy with the results, Milne then insisted Shepard illustrate Winnie-the-Pooh.

373 Vivian Forbes [1891-1937] Girls in a bedroom, view to a mosque through an arch beyond, signed with initials and dated VF 1935 bottom right pen, ink and watercolour drawing 34 x 23.5cm *£100 - 150 Provenance. Abbott & Holder, Museum St, London 374 Vivian Forbes was an English soldier, painter and poet now known for his Attributed to Daniel Maclise [1806-1870] relationship with the artist Glyn Philpot. A young lady crossing a stream in a formal Biography Forbes was enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers and met Philpot during garden, training at Aldershot in 1915. Forbes’ work was affected by his concerns about monochrome wash drawing fascism in Europe, and he was influenced by painters like Charles Ricketts and 13 x 10cm, with pencil drawing in the Charles Haslewood Shannon. Forbes also composed poetry, all of it dedicated margin to Philpot and their relationship. Forbes, Philpot, Ricketts and Shannon all had *£100 - 150 studios at some point in the Lansdown Road building of the Ladbroke Estate. Provenance. She joined The Country Life magazine in 1993 and created the character Dicky A-Daffy Tottering. She lives and works in rural Norfolk, where she persues her latest creative expression, sculpture. Her iunaugural exhibition was held at the O’Shea Gallery in April 2012.

Nick Botting’s early interest in painting was ignited at Winchester College from where he went on to take a foundation course at Hertfordshire College. A degree in Visual & Performing Arts at Kent University 1983-1986 completed his early training. He had his first solo exhibition at the Gulbenkian Theatre in Canterbury. There followed solo exhibitions in Australia and London. In 2001 he was the official Artist to the touring cricket team to Pakistan. From 2003 Botting has exhibited regularly at the Portland Gallery up to and including 2017.
