This cartoon for Morris & Co., designed in 1873 by Burne-Jones, is the design for the stained glass window at the North End of the Chancel of the Church of St. James, Lot: 71 Brighouse, Yorkshire, installed in 1874. Reference to the design 71 Edward Facon Watson (1804-1892) FIGURES is made in the Artist's account book which is held by the PROMENADING IN AN ORNAMENTAL PARK signed and Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and is referred to by A. dated 1866 watercolour and bodycolour 56 x 38cms; 22 x 15in. Charles Sewter in "The Stained Glass of William Morris and His See illustration Watson was born at Kirton in Holland, Circle" (Yale University Press, 1974), plate 469. Within the Lincolnshire; he was an occasional exhibitor at The Royal studio, Burne-Jones created the original pencil designs which Academy and The Royal Society of British Artists from 1839- were then copied in an enlarged form under his supervision by 1870; but he seems to have made his principal income as a an assistant, in this case probably Charles Fairfax Murray or picture restorer, framer, carver and guilder from his studios at possibly Thomas M. Rooke. Often, Burne-Jones would work Poland Street, London (1830-1837) and St. James' Gallery of over the assistants design in Chinese white until it reached its Art, 201 Piccadilly (1838- 1877). Amongst published prints he final form; passing after that to Morris & Co's. workshop for final produced lithographic views of Lea Castle in Worcestershire. production.
