Gomez Archbishop of Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels Los Angeles, California December 15, 2011 My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am honored to celebrate this Holy Mass with you, to begin these nine days of Simbang Gabi, as we get ready for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ on Christmas Day. This is a special day for all of us in the Church in Los Angeles, because we are celebrating the rich Catholic faith of our Filipino people, and your deep roots here in our Archdiocese and in our country, which date back to the first evangelization of America, when the first Filipinos arrived here at Morro Bay in 1587. My brothers and sisters, as you all know, your ancestors were here — worshipping, working, evangelizing, serving the needy, and building our country — almost 200 years before America’s founding fathers. We can never forget this, my brothers and sisters! Always be proud of your roots. Proud of where you come from. Proud of your Filipino history and heritage, your culture and customs. Your culture is a rich treasure and a beautiful part of who you are, a beautiful part of your Catholic identity, which you are called to live and to proclaim as a light in our society.     Filipino American Youth and Culture by Ed Tiong General Information The Republic of the Philippines, located off the southeast coast of Asia, is one of the largest island groups in the world, numbering 7,107 islands. The 1995 population was approximately 60.5 million, with fifty-five percent of the people living on the largest island of Luzon. Approximately eighty-five percent of Filipinos are Catholic, with large numbers of Protestants and Muslims. Filipinos comprise approximately 111 cultural and linguistic groups, mainly of Malayo-Polynesian origin. The ethnic make-up of the population has been greatly influenced by Chinese, Spanish, and Caucasian American intermarriages. Among the eleven language groups of the country, Filipino is the official national language which is native to the peoples of Central Luzon. The Philippines is, nevertheless, the third largest English-speaking country in the world. During the sixteenth century, Spain conquered the islands which they named for King Phillip II as "Las Islas Filipinas" or the Philippine Islands. After 327 years of Spanish domination, the Filipinos revolted, and won their independence in 1898. However, after the Spanish-American War, the United States controlled the Philippines until 1942, when Japan seized control until they were liberated by the Americans. Finally, in 1946, the American Congress granted independence to the Filipinos, and the second Republic of the Philippines was born. Filipino Migration Historians identify four major waves of Filipino migration to the United States. The first wave between 1898 and 1941 was comprised mostly of "pensionados" or scholars sent by the American government to U.S. schools, and large numbers of laborers recruited to work on farms in Hawaii and California.

    CHRISTMAS IS IN THE AIR! Hohoho Merry Christmas! WHAT IS CHRISTMAS? Christmas is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ, who Christians believe is the Son of God. The name 'Christmas' comes from the Mass of Christ (or Jesus). A Mass service (which is sometimes called Communion or Eucharist) is where Christians remember that Jesus died for us and then came back to life. The 'Christ- Mass' service was the only one that was allowed to take place after sunset (and before sunrise the next day), so people had it at Midnight! So we get the name Christ-Mass, shortened to Christmas. Christmas is now celebrated by people around the world, whether they are Christians or not. It's a time when family and friends come together and remember the good things they have. People, and especially children, also like Christmas as it's a time when you give and receive presents! 1. Starting Christmas in the -ber months If you look up “longest Christmas season in the world”, the Philippines will come up as a result. For most, Christmas starts in December. But for Filipinos, Christmas starts the moment it’s September. There’s no textbook explanation for why we celebrate Christmas so early, but there are theories. Perhaps it’s because of our predominantly Catholic beliefs. 2. Setting up a Belen In most countries, nativity scenes – also known as the belen – are only set up in churches or other religious spaces. But in the Philippines, it’s common to find it everywhere. In fact, every Filipino household will have one set up during the festive season.

    Homily for the Closing Mass of the Simbang Gabi Christmas Novena December 23, 2013 Saint Katherine Drexel Parish - Sacred Heart Church Springfield, Illinois + Most Reverend Thomas John Paprocki Bishop of Springfield in Illinois My dear brothers and sisters in Christ, I am pleased to be with you for this closing Mass of the Simbang Gabi Novena in preparation for the celebration of Christmas. As we hear in the response to the psalm for today: “Lift up your heads and see; your redemption is near at hand” (Luke 21:28). Christ, our redemption, is indeed near at hand, which is a source of great rejoicing for us. During these final days of Advent, the Church gives us various readings from the Gospels which focus specifically on the coming of Christ in history nearly two thousand years ago. In addition to hearing the details of Christ’s genealogy and His conception in the womb of Mary, we also hear the unfolding of the story of the birth of St. John the Baptist, an important part of the overall picture of the coming of Christ. A few days ago, we heard the account of the visit of the archangel Gabriel to Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist. When told by the angel that his wife, Elizabeth, would bear a son, he did not fully believe the promise, resulting in his being struck mute and thus unable to speak. 2 In today’s Gospel, we hear the story of the birth of John the Baptist and his circumcision on the eighth day according to the Jewish custom.

  • The Simbang Gabi
    The Simbang Gabi Is a time when Catholic churches across the Philippines celebrate mass outdoors in order to accommodate the faithful. At times, when mass is not celebrated outside, the doors of churches are, nevertheless, left wide open to allow attendants to share in the atmosphere of the mass. Its origins began in Mexico, where the practice of holding mass outdoors began, first, in 1587, when the Pope gave permission to Diego de Soria, a Mexican friar, to hold mass outdoors because the churches could not accommodate the huge number of worshipers that came to celebrate Christmas. The novena culminates, on the ninth day, with the Mass of the Gifts, or Misa de Gallo, which celebrates the birth of Jesus. However, it was not until 1669, during the early years of Christianity, in the Philippines, that the Misa de Gallo became a Philippine spiritual tradition. During Advent, in preparation for the birth of Christ, missionary friars held pre-dawn masses for nine consecutive days, to usher in the event of Jesus' birth. The masses were celebrated very early, usually at 4 in the morning, since they took place during the harvest season, when farmers had to be in the fields at the crack of dawn. The word gallo means rooster, in Spanish. At the first sound of dawn, at the crowing of the rooster, the entire family would get up and walk to the nearest parish church. During this time, colorful lanterns are hung in every door, window, tree branch, and street corner. Bands play native carols all across town while families, couples, and individuals make their way to the nearest church.
