 PASINAYA 2019: PALABAS (THE CCP OPEN HOUSE FESTIVAL) No. of Shows: 224 shows No. of performers: 7,691 performers (186 groups, 98 individuals) No. of Audience: 12,131 No. of Viewership:111,706

Description: For its 15th year, the Pasinaya, the biggest multi arts festival in the , is now three days - one day workshop and two days of performances featuring the participation of thousandsof artists and hundreds of artistic and cultural groups in the Philippines. It offered to the public a unique- “Pay what you can, See all you can” donation scheme the opportunity to enjoy a sneak preview of the CCP Performance Season.

Other cultural sites for the events were the Metropolitan Museum of , Museo Marino, National Museum: National Museum of Fine Arts, National Museum of Anthropology and National Musuem of Natural History; , , , , UP Manila Museum of a History of Ideas, FDCP Cinematheque Manila, Museum of Contemporary Art and Design, 1335 Mabini, Avellana Art Gallery, Gallery Duemila, 98B Collaboratory, Mono 8, DestileriaLimtuaco Museum, Calle Wright, NCCA Gallery and De La Salle College of Saint Benilde Center for Campus Art. 30 vans from the Museum Foundation of the Philippines ferried audiences to partner museums for free.More than 7,000 artists from 186 institution-based, community-based and school-based artistic groups participated in the 2019 CCP Pasinaya.

Participants may go in and out of the different CCP venues to attend the 30-minute workshops in various art disciplines conducted by leading artists, resource persons and teachers.

Recognizing the efforts of our Artistic Programmers offering various workshops from different art fields, this year, we also offered workshops like Deaf Awareness and Filipino Sign Language conducted by the Philippine Federation of the Deaf, Inc. Kawomenan Writing by Katrina Stuart Santiago, Echoing Arts Education Advocacy: The PHSA Experience by Gerry Leonardo.

 PASINAYA ARTS MARKET 2019 No. of exhibitors:22 art companies No. of attendees (public): 475 Description: The “2019 CCP PASINAYA Arts Market”is a two-day event that provides opportunity to promote the Arts Company/Groups offerings, trainings, workshops and production/ season of performances. This is a component of the 15thPasinaya Open House Festival.

 PERFORMATURA FESTIVAL 2019 Total No. of audience/guests (viewership): 2,226 No. of performers/artists/writers/speakers: 176 No. of partner organizations: 19 Description: Performatura Festival is the CCP’s way of highlighting the rich tapestry of Philippine artistic traditions that leap beyond the written word while welcoming writers and performers from diverse communities of the country. Performatura is a performance literature festival celebrating the intersections of the written word and performance. The word Performatura is a mash up of the word performance and orature or oral literature.

Description: Members of Book Development Association of the Philippines were featured in the book fair. The event is co-organized with Ms. Nida Ramirez of Visprint Inc.

 Komiks Guild of the Philippines Fair No. of Participants: 10 book sellers Description: Members of Komiks Guild of the Philippines were featured in the book fair. Both commercial and independent komiks publishers joined the event.

 CCP Café 1: ResilMojares and Hope Sabanpan-Yu Audience count: 101 Description: Have a light and enjoyable conversation with the National Artist for Literature ResilMojares and Dr. Hope Sabanpan-Yu.

 PELITERATURA 1: Ang PaglilitisNi MangSerapio Audience count: 90 Description: Director Khavn Dela Cruz’s film version of Paul Dumol’s classic “Ang PaglilitisniMangSerapio” will be screened for the Intellectual Property Office ofthe Philippines employees.

 PAGTUKLAS: Performatura 2019 Opening Ceremony Audience count: 137 Description: A variety show directed by Renz Sevilla which featured CCP VP and Artistic Director Chris Millado, Festival Director Vim Nadera, National Artist ResilMojares, PHSA MusikaIbarang, PHSA SanghiyasPangkatMananayaw, Karl Orit, Criselda Marie L. Go and Sam Roxas-Chua.

 Tanghal-Tanghalian led by Kuwit of PHSA Audience count: 160 Description: A set of literary performances from Kuwit of the Philippine High School for the Arts, Claudia Monette Enriquez, and Melanie Ramirez and Jose Tomasito Fernando of National Library of the Philippines. A 15-minute open mic will follow.

 LITERATURO 1: Sam Roxas-Chua Description: Sam Roxas-Chua, an international poet, gives lecture-demo about Asemic writing.

 TANGHAL-TULA: Elimination Round Description: Spoken word artists and performance poets will have a battle of words at the first ever Tanghal-Tula Performatura Slam Poetry Contest. Hosted by The Makatas.Judges include Joselitodelos Reyes, SkyzxLabastilla and Mark Ghosn

 PELITERATURA 2: Balangiga: Howling Wilderness Description: Watch Khavn Dela Cruz’s award-winning “Balangiga: Howling Wilderness” for free and join him for the open forum after the film screening.

 ORATURE OVERTURE: Dumagats from Mauban, Quezon Description: Dumagats from Mauban, Quezon staged the story of their hero Gat Uban.

 TANGHAL -TULA: Final Round Description: The best among the champion poets competed for the final round of the first ever Tanghal- tulaPerformatura Slam Poetry Contest. Hosted by The Makatas, the final round will also feature performances by AzamRais of Malaysia and Kooky Tuason.

 PAGSASARA: National Artist Edith Tiempo Birth Centennial Show Audience count: 63 Description: A variety show directed by Domingo Lazam III featured Ralph JustineAlconaba, Shamel Icy Bebita, Hans Christian Baldono, John Diether Amoyo, Julius Val Beringuel, Danielle Esther Lois Sabungan, and Kim Chantal Capones of Kahayag Dance Company Philippines Inc. led by Aiken Emmanuel Quipot. One of the highlights was the projection show of Annie Dennise P. Lumbao with dancer JM Cabling.

 VIRGIN LABFEST 15: TITIBOK-TIBOK (June 19-30, 2019) (Co-Production - Tanghalang Pilipino, Writer’s Bloc ) No. of audience:5,357 (66%) Number of performers/artists:83 performing actors; 22 directors; 24 playwrights Description:Now on its 15th year, the annual festival of fresh one-act plays continues to attract theatre- goers with remarkable works by emerging and established playwrights. Established in 2005, the Virgin Labfest aims to provide our playwrights a venue to present their unpublished, untried, untested and unstaged works to theater-going public. Virgin Labfest is a project of the Manila-based playwrights group Writer's Bloc, Inc., acclaimed theater company Tanghalang Pilipino, and the Cultural Center of the Philippines. Other new components of the Festival included a reunion of playwrights, director and actors; a Playwright’s Fair; and a Library Exhibit.

Opening and Closing Ceremonies were held on the first and last day, respectively. The outdoor concert was open to the public.

 PPO’s 45th Anniversary Concert Series Vii: Yoshikazu Fukumura, Conductor; Ray Wang, Cello No. of audience/guests:539 (38% of total capacity) Description: International cellist Ray Wang has performed in musical centers and festivals in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Macau. His performances have taken him to Chicago, Cremona and Florence, among others. Wang also serves as a music faculty member of the Baptist University and Chinese University of Hong Kong.

 PPO in Bocaue, Bulacan No. of performers: 72 No. of audience:2,000 Description:Fresh from its outreach concerts in the provinces of San Jose de Buenavista and Pandan in Antique, the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra went onstage on July 5, 2019, 6:00 pm at the St. Martin of Tours – Poblacion in Bocaue, Bulacan. The PPO outreach concert was undertaken through the efforts of Cultural Center of the Philippines President Arsenio "Nick" Lizaso. The performance of the country’s leading musical ensemble signaled the opening of the Baguio Christmas Fair filled with curated chalets of Christmas finds, flavors and finery, and activities for all ages. During the program, the audience

were also serenaded by The Nightingales, Bernadette Mamauag, Nerissa De Juan, and Nazer Salcedo. The concert was put together by CCP President Arsenio J. Lizaso, with the help of Baguio Mayor Benjamin Magalong and the Baguio Tourism Council headed by Ms. Gladys de Vera.

The same day, there were mentoring workshops that took place at the Infant Jesus Academy classrooms as part of the outreach program helmed by CCP President Arsenio J. Lizaso. Here, the members of the orchestra were greeted by around 250 students who eagerly brought their respective instruments that day. Those taught include the violin, cello, contrabass, flute, clarinet, saxophone, horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, guitar, piano, and percussion. Attended by Aklan Vice Governor Atty. Reynaldo M. Quimpo and former Aklan Vice Governor Billie Calizo-Quimpo. This event was brought by CCP President Arsenio J. Lizaso in a joint effort with DeputySpeaker and Antique Congresswoman Loren Legarda, Aklan Governor Florencio T. Miraflores, Aklan Vice Governor Atty. Reynaldo M. All performances in Baguio City are part of the outreach project of CCP Arsenio J. Lizaso in cooperation with the University of Cordilleras-Center for Creative Productions.

 OTHER PPO CONCERTS  Asia In Resonance 2019 Gala Concert No. of performers: 11 No. of audience: no data Venue/Date/ Time:Tokyo Metropolitan Theater; 1 – 4 July 2019 Description: A “One Night Only Special Concert” hosted by the Japan Foundation Asia Centre with more than 80 musicians from five Southeast Asian countries: Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera and Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra), Thailand (Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra), Indonesia (Jakarta City Philharmonic and Jakarta Sinfonietta), Myanmar (Myanmar National Symphony Orchestra), Philippines (Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra (PPO) and Manila Symphony Orchestra (MSO)), and Japan.The multinational orchestra was conducted by Ken-ichiro Kobayashi, a revered veteran orchestra conductor in Japan who has conducted in key European capitals and recorded with Canyon Classics and Octavia Records. The concert in Tokyo is among the culminating events of the five-year cultural exchange initiative of the Japan Foundation Asia Centre (JFAC) of the Japan government, which has fostered regional collaboration in arts, culture, and Japan studies, especially in Southeast Asia.

The week-long music camp in Batangas City (Luzon leg), included sessions on singing and breathing techniques, enhancing capabilities of the singer and enabling them to contribute strongly to their respective voice sections. The Sing Philippines movement brings to life the vision of National Artist and MADz founder Andrea Veneracion of a nation singing in harmony and united in songs.

 2018 Ternocon Exhibit No. of Artists: 30 No. of Audience: 400 Description: The CCP, Bench and SM Clark brought the Ternocon 2018 Exhibit in Angeles City, Pampanga from August 2 – 9, 219 at the Event Center 3 of the SM Clark. Ternocon 2018 was a terno- making convention and contest for regional designers initiated by the CCP and Bench (Suyen Corporation). The project aimed to encourage the use of theterno as a formal dress, to inspire a new generation of Filipino designers to make ternos that are grounded in history of the Philippine National Dress, and to motivate regional designers to create works that are at par with the construction techniques of senior fashion designers.

 CCP Arts Academy Workshop Masterclass on Dance: Convergence of Dance and Soft Sculptures Description: The CCP Arts Academy: Masterclass on Dance (Conformities/Disfigurations/ReConfigurations) is a partnership between the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the Asian Arts Council, that aims to explore the convergence of dance and soft sculptures. Conceived by Elena Comendador and Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish who are both Filipino artists and now working with The Ailey School of New York, it was conducted to bring Filipino dancers, choreographers, and movement inventors working in the Philippines and in the US to exchange creative processes and to explore and collaborate with movement possibilities that the sculptural works might induce.

 BatangSining Description: On its second year, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) in partnership with Department of Education Dagupan City Division and LGU City of Dagupan, conducted a five-day creative expression workshop dubbed as “BatangSining” last March 18-22, 2019 for learners in Grades 4 to 6 at Dagupan City National High School (DCNHS) SPA Building and participated by over 38 Elementary schools in the City of Dagupan Division. Responsiveness The workshop participants were very grateful to receive coaching from Mr. Dutkiewicz who provided them valuable tips for the improvement of their piano improvisation techniques. They enjoyed collaborating with each other during the hands-on portion of the workshop, as they were coached by Mr. Dutkiewicz.

Description: A one hour lecture-performance program on opera appreciation given to selected grade 9 students from Manuel L. Quezon High School, Jose P. The CCP has succeeded in bringing to the public school, an entertaining and compelling lecture performance on the opera as an art form. Responsiveness The “Discover Opera” performers impressed the students and the MAPEH teachers. The students were responsive and receptive during the lecture part.

Some students gamely volunteered to play roles/parts from a certain opera. The students enjoyed participating in the listening game where they guessed the correct vocal classification played by the spinner. The songs were selections of arias from popular operas.

The performance also made the audience aware of the different types of opera voice types and ranges, its brief history, form and the overall component of opera staging. The MAPEH teachers were grateful that the lecture-performance was held in their school because it will help students become familiar with Opera which is a topic in their class during the fourth quarter.

After the lecture-performance, there were inquiries from the students to take up voice lessons.

Through this mini-festival, organizations, artists and individuals who have the mission to promote children’s rights have shown that a certain advocacy could be promoted and articulated through the arts. Arts could be a potent tool in creating a better and safer world for children. Overall, there was a collective willingness to do it regularly with the CCP taking the leadership in spearheading a sustainable program for the development and promotion of the rights of the child.

Speaking in appreciation to the guests were house host Atty. Antonio A. Pastor; CCP President Arsenio J. Lizaso, and CCP Vice President-Artistic Director and CCP EPA Project Director Chris B. Millado. Discussing EPA in detail were Encyclopedia Editor-in-Chief Dr. Nicanor G. Tiongson with a speech addressing the encyclopedia and the nation, and Mr. Elmer Gatchalian with the artistic and cultural highlights of Batangas mentioned in the Encyclopedia. Atty. Sylvia Marasigan, Batangas Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Officer gave an overview on the artistic contributions of Batangas-born talents. Entertaining the guests were Bianca Camille Lopez and Nazer Salcedo in their encyclopedia anthology of Filipino music throughout history. Atty. Antonio A. Pastor rounded up the program with a piano performance of several musical classics. Tokens of appreciation were also given to the family, provincial government and provincial tourism office.  Martir Sa Golgota Description: In celebration of its 30th year anniversary,TanghalangSta.Ana, presented its annual senakulo play, MartirsaGolgota. Leading the cast is Lance Raymundo and directed by Lou Veloso. The senakulo presents the life and death of Jesus Christ intersperse with relevant social issues.

 Baka Naman Hindi (Repeat) (CCP Production) Description: The Virgilio “Beer” Flores’ translation of French playwright Georges Feydeau’sA Flea in Her Ear, is known for being an archetype of the French farce. First staged at the CCP in the 1970s under the direction of CCP President Arsenio Lizaso, this new production brings back the rollicking sexual comedy popular during the period. In this turn-of-the-century farcical play set during the “belle époque”, a woman, suspecting her husband of having an affair, plots to catch him in the act.

It is about opening this home and celebrating the wonders of imagination, the playfulness of play, and the stories that are woven in between.

 The Cry of the Dead Whale: Earth Day Installation Name of Artist: Biboy Royong Description: On 11 May 2017, a supposed ‘dead whale’ was seen on the shores of Naic, . It was in fact an art installation. What looked like a dead whale from afar was really made of plastic waste up close.The Philippines ranks third in the list of countries with the most plastic waste going into the oceans. To address the issue, and with a very limited budget, the strategy taken wasa disruptive, monumental installation that effectively spread the message on the worsening case of plastic pollution. The large-scale sculpture was unveiled on the shores of one of the most polluted water bodies in the country — the . For the CCP’s The Cry of the Dead Whale installation, a new element was added - a “dead baby whale' inside the belly of the dead whale. A representation of the millennials — the generation that will inherit the future of our oceans, it is both a statement and a question directed at the target audience.

With the title Hands On: Touch, Engage, Create, the works here tell the viewer that tactility is not just a basic premise of creative generation, but a requirement of its “completion.”

 Designing for Culture Panel Discussion Audience count: 26 Description: In this panel discussion, practicing designers and artists from various fields of culture, as well as from CCP's history, were gathered to delve into the creative process and conceptualization that occurs in designing for art. It will attempt to articulate the elusive translation that occurs from initial discussion to actual production of materials to its effectivity in creating enticing and lasting impressions to the public. This panel discussion was in line with current exhibition POSTER/ITY: 50 Years of Art and Culture at the CCP.

Ballerinas performed excerpts from ‘La Fille Mal Gardee’ (the unchaperoned daughter), a light and playful classical ballet piece that made audience laugh and briefly forget the noise of the world outside the theatre walls, aside from Broadway and contemporary dances. Musicians entertained the audience with classical and broadway pieces in piano, violin and songs.

 Viva La Vida! (Pink Toes Center Grand Recital) Description: A celebration of Spanish and Latin music and dances, performed by the Pink Toes Ballerinas and The Play Music Club - piano violin voice students of Fairview, Congressional, and New Era University . The main act was the ballet in pure dance divertissement. Betina Root played the role of Kitri partnered by Marveen Ely Lozano from the UP Dance Company. Dance Choreographies by Ethel Cablao, Marla Rivera and Herbert Alvarez, Janine Liao directs and arranges the music.

 39th National Folk Dance Workshop No. of Participants:1,025 (teachers, dance directors/choreographers, dancers and students from different parts of the country) Description: An annual week-long folk dance workshop specially designed for teachers, dancers, dance trainors, dance directors and choreographers. It primarily aims to address the various needs and concerns of folk dance education and dance production. This year, the Philippine Folk Dance Society conducted said event in partnership with the CCP specifically through its Arts Education Department (AED). The implementation of this year’s National Folk Dance Workshop was historical as the Philippine Folk Dance Society highlighted its 70th founding anniversary. It was held at the CCP Folk Arts Theater where the pioneers of the programs namely National Artists for Dance, Francisca Reyes-Aquino and Lucrecia Urtula made their impact.

The theme of ANI 40 is Katutubo and by discussing the content and parts of the book, the attendees of the discussion gained better perspective about indigenous people on the Philippines and the victims of the Marawi Siege. According to the participants, the book was an eye opener and at the same time it helped writers around the country to showcase their works.
