Seventy eight species belonging to different plant families were characterized through chloroplast DNA gene sequences of rbcL, matK and intergenic spacer region psbA-trnH. These species were used to search possible relationships through phylogenetic analysis. The phylogenetic tree based on matK (~800 bp), rbcL (~1400 bp) and psbA-trnH (~500 bp) sequences showed 6, 8 and 4 diverged groups, respectively. Our analysis suggests that Ajuga bracteosa, Salvia aegyptiaca, Bupleurum falcatum and Acorus calamus are highly diverged from rest of seventy four different species. Based on the results of medicinal plants from Pakistan, we validate that matK and rbcL are more useful as barcode for studying large population of plant species. The present study is useful for authentic identification of new plant species and clearly shows high degree of intra-specific and inter-specific evolutionary relation among all tested species from different medicinally important plant families. Our findings suggest that proper identification of some of the plant species is still challenging and these unique species need further studies.

The detailed meiotic studies, firstly are helpful in solving taxonomic and evolutionary enigmas and sec- ondly provide best chemotypes for further exploration and conservatory purposes. Male meiosis in 29 species of 54 populations belonging to the 18 genera of Lamiaceae has been undertaken for the first time from Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh falling in Western Himalayas. Euploid cytotypes are reported in Ajuga parviflora (n=8x=32), Nepeta eryostachys (n=4x=18) and N. graciliflora (n=4x=18). Besides, B-chromosomes in previ- ously known cytotypes of five species, A. bracteosa (n=32+0-2B), Leucas lanata (n=11+0-1B), Lycopus euro- peus (n=11+0-1B), Phlomis bracteosa (n=11+0-1B) and Vitex negundo (n=16+0-1B), are reported for the first time. A substantial amount of meiotic abnormalities in the form of chromatin stickiness, cytomixis, chromatin bridges and laggards are reported in the presently worked out population that leads to the high variability in the microsporogenesis, pollen grain size heterogeneity and ultimately, reduce pollen viability.

The people rely upon the indigenous plant resources to cure various respiratory disorders. The primary objective of this review was to assemble all available ethno-medicinal data of plants used for respiratory disorders in Pakistan. Pharmacological activity of these plants (based upon published sci- entifc research), distribution, diversity, use, preparation methods, economical value, conservation status and various available herbal products of some plants have also been explored. This study scrutinized various electronic databases for the literature on medicinal plants used in Pakistan to treat respiratory disorders. A total of 384 species belonging to 85 families used to treat respiratory disorders in Pakistan has been documented. Cough was the disorder treated by the highest number of species (214) followed by asthma (150), cold (57) and bronchitis (56). Most of the plants belongs to Asteraceae (32) and Solanaceae family (32) followed by moraceae (17), Poaceae (13), and Amaranthaceae (13) with their habit mostly of herb (219) followed by Shrub (112) and tree (69). Traditional healers in the region mostly prepare ethno medicinal recipes from leaves (24%) and roots (11%) in the form of decoction.

A first ever detailedeco-taxonomical field survey of the whole district was conducted to explore floral diversity, plant habit associated with microhabitats. Timing of flowering response of species within the different months was also recorded during two consective years (2014-16) and flowering phonological data was stored as binary data matrix. The influence of studied climatic variables on the flowering phenological response was tested through canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). A total of 748 vascular plants (740 species, 3 sub-species, 5 varieties) belonged to 490 genera and 120 plant families were recorded including 77 species as new to the study area. The leading plant family was Compositae (69 spp., 9.22%), followed by Poaceae (57 spp., 7.62%), Leguminosae (54 spp., 7.22%), Lamiaceae (42 spp., 5.61%) and Rosaceae (29 spp., 3.88%); while the leading genus was Euphorbia (10 spp.), followed by Cyperus, Ficus, Geranium and Prunus (7spp.
