UEFA AND FIFA MEMBERSHIP

On 8 January 1997 the GFA applied for FIFA membership, and in March 1999 FIFA confirmed that the GFA fulfilled the requirements of Article 4.7 of the FIFA Statutes and consequently passed their file onto UEFA.

On 12 April 1999 the GFA applied for membership of UEFA (Union of European Football Associations). This immediately drew a hostile reception from the Spanish Football Federation and the Spanish Government.

After a long legal challenge, at the UEFA Congress held London on 24 May 2013, Gibraltar finally became the 54th member of UEFA and the smallest UEFA nation by population, with a team in the UEFA Champions League from the 2014/15 season.

Three years later, on May 13th 2016, Gibraltar was granted FIFA membership so they can enter for the World Cup, playing their first qualification game on September 6th 2016 at home to Greece.

Gibraltar took part in the UEFA Nations League in 2018 and our club sides have enjoyed participation in both the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League competitions in recent years.
