We have set up members with jobs and internships all around Austin and even the nation. Our top members earn the pleasure of working backstage at fashion shows during New York Fashion Week, which we attend every season. Our biggest project every year is to produce the annual UT Fashion Show featuring the Senior Collections by our Apparel Design students.     Top Ten Fashion Designers In a society where we are bombarded with fashion, how on earth do we decide who the top ten designers are? Well, after quite a lot of pondering, I came up with some names that I thought were a well-rounded group of creative minds. These are the best from all over the board. So here goes. 1. VALENTINO GARAVANI. From Italy, this man knows how to make a woman look like a goddess. Having dressed many of the world's most famous leading ladies (such as Julia Roberts and Elizabeth Taylor), he has proven his talent and risen to the top as The King of Elegance. 2. TOM FORD Born in Texas this man is not only the Creative Director for Gucci, he's also the Creative Director for Yves Saint Laurent. Ford won the Best International Designer Award in 2000. 3. DONATELLA VERSACE is one of fashions most loved divas. Born in Calabria Italy, she took over her late brother Gianni Versace's design house. By following in his footsteps Donatella has become known for her sexy yet elegant designs. 4. ALEXANDER MCQUEEN is one of the worlds most innovative and outstanding designers. Known for his theatrical influence, his creations are not only beautiful but also colourful and raw. 5. BETSEY JOHNSON. Her designs are brilliant, bold and fun. Emmanuel Raymundo Abstract On February 25, 2011, the fashion luxury company Christian Dior suspended John Galliano, who had been its creative director since 1996, after his arrest over making anti-Semitic remarks at a Paris bar. Quickly following his suspension, a video from December 2010 was distributed showing Galliano hurling anti-Semitic invectives at several bar patrons. On March 1, 2011, Dior fired Galliano. At stake in the considerable interest and speculations regarding who takes over at Dior is control of a €24.6B business empire and access to a historic couturier’s archive. In this sense, its designer will influence the label’s “books” both financial and what will be stored in its physical repository as part of the brand’s creative and artistic repertoire. Despite fashion’s apparent ubiquity, the anticipation surrounding who takes over at Dior is proof that despite fashion’s professed democratization, there still exists a fashion hierarchy with Dior occupying its upper echelon. Since Galliano’s dismissal, fashion insiders have moved from breathlessly feverish in their speculations to desperately calling out for relief in the face of an unexpectedly drawn-out waiting game that is now over a year old and otherwise an eternity in fashion’s hyper accelerated production cycle. To purposely counter fashion’s accelerated internal clock, the purpose of this commentary is to keep fashion in a reflective state rather than a reflexive stance and uses fashion on film, and specifically Robert Altman’s Prêt-à-Porter (1994), to give cultural and historical context to all the online speculation and chatter.

The $350 billion fashion industry not only puts the clothes on our backs, but gives individuals an outlet for individual expression as well. More and more, the fashion design process is recognized as a creative process where vision, raw materials, and skill meet to produce fashion apparel that should be worthy of sui generis protection. Current intellectual property regimes fail to adequately equip designers with legal remedies to guard against design piracy, and this affects both innovation and competition. Moreover, even though the U.S is a signatory to the Berne Convention, the U.S.’s lack of a protection scheme for fashion design is out of step with other signatory members, namely the European Union, and this mismatch could invite unintended reciprocity problems for American designers abroad.
