SEX DIFFERENCES IN VISUAL PERCEPTION IN MELANOCHROMIS AURATUS Margaret Coniam A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF SCIENCE August 2014 Committee: Moira van Staaden, Advisor Sheryl Coombs Robert Huber ii ABSTRACT Moira van Staaden, Advisor The cichlid fishes of Lake Malawi have undergone explosive speciation in the past 1.5 million years with the production of between 500-1000 species of cichlid 1. Sensory factors such as visual, olfactory and acoustic signals are all believed to play a role in this differentiation process. Vision is by far the most studied and best understood of the sensory modalities, but there is a distinct gap between our understanding of the molecular components of the cichlid visual system and whether, or how exactly, these impact the behavior displayed. Recent research has shown that the type of visual pigment expressed in the retina differs by sex in Melanochromis auratus 11. We aimed to determine whether such differences are reflected in sex- dependent variation in hue sensitivity and hue discrimination in M. auratus. To test this, we used a modified optomotor discrimination task to assess (i) differences in the luminance curves for each sex and (ii) sex differences in the minimum angular distance of adjacent hues required to elicit recognition as two distinct stimuli. Our results indicate significant variation in the minimum brightness required for the perception of hues across the color spectrum, but no sex- specific difference in detection thresholds. Similarly, results for the minimum angular distance required to discriminate between adjacent hues suggest there are areas of the color spectrum to which vision is tuned, but again no difference between the sexes. -

OTARIIDAE AND PHOCIDAE DEFINITION AND GENERAL DESCRIPTION Pinnipeds are aquatic carnivores. They differ from other mammals in their streamlined shape, reduction of pinnae and adaptation of both fore and hind feet to form flippers. In the skull, the orbits are enlarged, the lacrimal bones are absent or indistinct and there are never more than three upper and two lower incisors. The cheek teeth are nearly homodont and some conditions of the ear that are very distinctive (Repenning 1972). Both superfamilies of pinnipeds, Phocoidea and Otarioidea, are represented in Australian waters by a number of species (Table 56.1). The various superfamilies and families may be distinguished by important and/or easily observed characters (Table 56.2). King (1983b) provided more detailed lists and references. These and other differences between the above two groups are not regarded as being of great significance, especially as an undoubted fur seal (Australian Fur-seal Arctocephalus pusillus) is as big as some of the sea lions and has some characters of the skull, teeth and behaviour which are rather more like sea lions (Repenning, Peterson & Hubbs 1971; Warneke & Shaughnessy 1985). The Phocoidea includes the single Family Phocidae – the ‘true seals’, distinguished from the Otariidae by the absence of a pinna and by the position of the hind flippers (Fig. -

A serosurvey investigating the presence of anti-Brucella antibodies in 3 Antarctic pinniped spe- cies was undertaken with a protein A/G indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) and the Rose Bengal test (RBT). Serum samples from 33 Weddell seals Leptonychotes weddelli were analysed, and antibodies were detected in 8 individuals (24.2%) with the iELISA and in 21 (65.6%) with the RBT. We tested 48 southern elephant seal Mirounga leonina sera and detected antibodies in 2 animals (4.7%) with both the iELISA and the RBT. None of the 21 Antarctic fur seals Arctocephalus gazella was found positive. This is the first report of anti-Brucella antibodies in southern elephant seals. The potential impact of Brucella infection in pinnipeds in Antarctica is not known, but Brucella spp. -

Tropical Fish Now that you have set up your aquarium and are starting to think about adding fish, you have many choices to choose from. One specific type of fish is the tropical fish, found in tropical waters all over the world and in areas near the equator. They can live in fresh water such as ponds, lakes, streams and even oceans that are salt water. In home aquariums, tropical fish are usually kept in heated fish tanks or in areas where the ambient room temperature is between 70°F - 82°F. As you make your decisions, be sure to research their compatibility, hardiness and if they are a schooling fish or not. Selecting the right fish will help ensure that you have hours of enjoyment and success. Today, many freshwater fish are captive bred either in fish farms or by hobbyists, making them readily available and easy to find. Popular freshwater tropical fish include Bettas, Guppies, Tetras, Swordtails, Platys, Barbs, Mollies and Corydoras among others. Sometimes people starting out in the aquatic hobby may not always provide their fish with ideal living conditions. Fish recommended for beginners and new aquariums must be durable and able to handle sometimes-poor water quality and stressful living conditions. The list included here are freshwater fish and will provide you with a nice assortment to consider. Cold -Water Fish The most common cold-water fish species is the goldfish but there are many other fish species that do not require a heated tank such as White Cloud Mountain Minnows, Bloodfin Tetras, and Rosy Barbs among others; where their preferred water temperature is between 64 to 72 degrees F. -

Im Vergleich zu anderen Ländern weisen die Korallenriffe Indonesiens die höchsten Schädigungen auf. Das zerstörende Fischen ist ein Hauptgrund für die Degradation der Korallenriffe in Indonesien, so dass das Gesamtsystem dieser Fangpraxis analysiert werden muss. Dazu wurden im Rahmen dieser Studie die Standortbedingungen der Korallen erfasst, die Hauptnutzungen mit ihren jeweiligen Auswirkungen und typischen Merkmale der Nutzungen bestimmt sowie die politische Haltung der gegenwärtigen Regierung gegenüber diesem Problemfeld untersucht.
