DECEMBER 2007 PhD Dissertation: Autonomy in Modern Japanese Literature ABSTRACT This dissertation aims to examine the manner in which the concept of autonomy (jiritsu) is treated in modern and contemporary Japanese literature. This examination will be performed by analysing the autonomous attitude of a contemporary Japanese writer Nakagami Kenji (1946–1992). This dissertation focuses on examining Nakagami Kenji’s ambivalent attitude towards his act of writing. We will explore the manner in which his act of writing appears to be a paradox between self-identification and the integration into the collective. Then, we will observe the possibility in which Nakagami’s ambivalent attitude is extended to cover Maruyama Masao’s relative definition of autonomy and Karatani Kōjin’s interpretation of Immanuel Kant’s notion of freedom and responsibility. Nakagami’s attempt is certainly not confined to only his works. The notion of autonomy may be applied to perceive a similar thought that was represented by previous writers. We will also examine various never-ending autonomous attempts expressed by Sakaguchi Ango, Miyazawa Kenji and Nakahara Chūya. Moreover, we will analyse how Nakagami’s distrust of the modern Japanese language and his admiration of the body as an undeniable object are reflected in his major novels in detail and attempt to extend this observation into the works of the theatrical artists in the 1960s such as Betsuyaku Minoru, Kara Jūrō, Hijikata Tatsumi and Terayama Shūji and contemporary women writers such as Tsushima Yūko, Takamura Kaoru, Tawada Yōko and Yoshimoto Banana. -

TEN The Variety of TangledHair The world of Tangled Hair—its settings, characters, and voices—is the sub- ject of this chapter. In addition to settings both imaginary and realistic, there are a multitude of voices and characters, so many that a single chapter cannot encompass them all. THE LAND OF SPRING Many of the poems of Tangled Hair are set in an imaginary world whose implicit setting is the “land of spring.” Akiko’s earliest use of the expression was in: Drops from the young one’s hair piled up in the grass then were born as a butterfly This is the land of spring Wakaki ko ga /kami no shizuku no /kusa ni korite /chò to umareshi / Koko haru no kuni (no. 360; Myòjò, July 1901) 1 Here, water, that protean medium, drips down as a young woman wrings out her hair; as the drops reach the grass, they gradually collect into a mass, which then metamorphoses into a butterfly. -

NARO, Crop Sci.)1,33 - 124(2017) 33 Induced Mutations for Food and Energy Security: Challenge of Inducing Unique Mutants for New Cultivars and Molecular Research *1 Hitoshi NAKAGAWA and Hiroshi KATO Abstract Following the construction of the Gamma Field at the Institute of Radiation Breeding( IRB) in 1960, mutation breeding was accelerated in Japan. The facility is used to artifi cially induce mutations with a higher radiation dose( up to 2 Gy/day, that is ca. 300,000 times that of natural background) at a higher frequency than occurs in nature. Since the unit became operational, the number of mutant cultivars generated in Japan increased until 2000–2010 and has since decreased. There have been 295 direct-use mutant cultivars representing 70 species generated through irradiation utilizing gamma-rays, X-rays, ion beams and chemical mutagenesis and in vitro culture. Each cultivar has been registered and released in Japan, with approximately 79% of these induced by radiation. There have been 335 indirect-use mutant cultivars, including 298 rice, of which 150 cultivars(50 .3%) were derived from the semi-dwarf mutant cv. “Reimei” or its off spring. The economic impact of these mutant cultivars, primarily of rice and soybean, is very large. Some useful mutations are discussed for rice, such as low digestible-protein content, low amylose content, giant embryo and non-shattering. Useful mutations in soybean such as radio-sensitivity, fatty acid composition, lipoxygenase lacking, glycinin rich and super- nodulation have been identifi ed. A similar series of advantageous mutations have been found in Japanese pear and other crops through various screening methods. -

Tyler, Adviser Professor Richard Torrance ______________________________ Professor Naomi Fukumori Adviser Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures Copyright by Jeffrey Angles 2004 ABSTRACT During the twenty-five years between the beginning of the Taishō period in 1912 and the Japanese invasion of China in 1937, the spread of medical psychology and sexological discourse helped contribute to the development of new ideas about masculinity and gender in Japan. Popular literature represented one forum in which people explored, promoted, and qualified these new ideas. The manifestations of male-male desire that one finds in the literature of the period, however, do not just passively reflect changes in contemporary ideology. Literary developments also helped shape the idioms that writers used to describe the subject. This dissertation examines the representations of male-male desire in the bestselling works of two authors active during this window of change: the poet, writer, and painter Murayama Kaita (1896-1919) and the mystery author Edogawa Ranpo (1894-1965). Through critical analysis and original translations of their works, this dissertation shows that their depictions of desire between men were shaped not only by changing ideas about gender relations but also the artistic movements and genres with which both authors were associated. -

Ethics of Emotion in Nineteenth-Century Japanese Literature: Shunsui, Bakin, the Political Novel, Shôyô, Sôseki Daniel Poch Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 ©2014 Daniel Poch All rights reserved ABSTRACT Ethics of Emotion in Nineteenth-Century Japanese Literature: Shunsui, Bakin, the Political Novel, Shôyô, Sôseki Daniel Poch This dissertation investigates how textual negotiations of “human feeling” and its ethically disruptive potential fundamentally shaped the production of literature in Japan over the early modern-modern divide well into the 20th century. “Human feeling” (Jap. jô, Chin. qing) was a loaded term in traditional Confucian discourses that subsumed amorous sentiment and sexual desire. It was seen as both a powerful force that could reinforce important societal bonds (such as the one between husband and wife) and as transgressive and ethically suspect. While traditional literary discourse, reaching back to the “Great Preface” of the Chinese Classic of Poetry (Shijing), defined poetry as a medium that could channel potentially unregulated emotions and desires, from the 18th century onward a strong awareness of “human feeling” started shaping the production of a broader spectrum of Japanese genres, such as jôruri puppet plays and, especially from the early 19th century, narrative fiction. I argue that the necessity to represent and write about potentially transgressive feelings and desires lies at the heart of major genres in 19th century Japan. At the same time this engendered the often conscious impulse to regulate these feelings ethically, for instance, through the specific dynamics of gender and plot. -

From cars and computer chips to brand clothing, material objects manufactured across Asia have become indispensable to people’s lives in most cultural contexts. This mega production generates huge amounts of waste and pollution that threaten the health and lifestyle of many Asians. Yet, Asia is not only a site of production, but also one of the most rapidly growing consumer markets. This series focuses on consumption – the engine propelling Asia onto the world economic stage – and its implications, from practices and ideologies to environmental sustainability, both globally and on the region itself. The series explores the interplay between the state, market economy, technologies, and everyday life, all of which have become defining facets of contemporary Asian culture. Shifts in consumption that have taken place across Asia since the 1950s have had a deep impact on new and emerging informal economies of material care, revealing previously invisible sites of innovation, resistance and co-option.
